Shimonoseki is famous for the Fish Markets. Karato Market is so popular among the fresh fish or sushi fans in the weekend. Naniwa is closed on Sunday, but it is open from 11:30 to 2pm for lunch and from 5pm to 10pm for dinner for the other days.The chef is very reliable not in English but in the traditional Japanese sushi or blowfish course, etc. The easiest way to experience his sushi, etc. would be to visit the venue in the lunch time and ask them you would like to have Sushi Bento (3800 yen plus 8%tax) and if you prefer a Japanese sake together, ask them 1(ichi) goh (180ml) nihonshu. It would be around 800 yen to 1000 yen(plus 8%tax). So, you are to pay around 5000 yen to experience the best sushi lunch set which includes wonderful miso soup, chawan-mushi, 7 kinds of sushi plus 2 additional sushi rolls and powdered green tea plus a Japanese sweet. Please do not try to speak to him in English. Instead, you are recommended to try your Japanese (even fragmentary) because the staff there are all kind as far as you use their language. Wife and I just visited this place today and had Sushi Bento and a sake. It was wonderful! I know several good sushi places in Shimonoseki, but this must be the authentic one among the top category.The photo I added here shows the part of lunch menu. I ate here based on a Lonely Planet review. I was excited to eat sushi/sashimi from a restaurant above a Japanese fish market. When I arrived for lunch at 12:45 it was packed. There was a 15-20 minute wait. Once seated, I took my place at a long counter where the sushi/sashimi would come around on a revolving conveyor belt which was pretty cool. The prices of the fish are determined by the color of the plate they come on. However, there were mostly the higher priced plates that seemed to be going around. After spending about 45 minutes here I managed to sample 5 different fish that ranged in price from 190-480 yen per plate of two pieces. The fatty tuna was by far the best. I tried whale tongue which was chewy with a smoked flavor. The sushi was average. I felt that the selection they were putting out was somewhat limited, yet the menu itself was quite extensive. I would have stayed longer, but after waiting for more fish to appear, I just kept seeing the same pieces going around. I am still glad I went, even just for the experience.

A lot of tourists gather here every weekend and holiday during the lunch time to enjoy all kinds of inexpensive Sushi sold piece by piece in the Karato Fishmarket. They take them out to sit on the deck along the Kanmon Straits. Roof top of the Karato Fishmarket is my favorite place to eat those sushi and to have a rest looking down the Straits busy with ships running both ways.
