Top 6 Hostels hotel in La Paz, Bolivia

May 4, 2023 Timmy Ribble

Sitting in a valley in the Andes Mountains, La Paz is the city that touches the clouds. The de facto capital of Bolivia, and sitting between 3300 and 4100 meters above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. Rich with 19th century churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colorful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the center of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs.

Excellent place

Excellent value for money. The staff is very helpful and pleasant. The only two things I didn't like was that couldn't bring beer from the outside because they sometimes don't have any beer left to sell :)))))) but what can you do AND there are no lockers. On the positive note it is very well situated close to a supermarket and the teleferico and also there are a lot of great restaurants around serving delicious food. Almost forgot that there is a very good kitchen area where people meet. Thank you Sergio and staff. Muchas gracias, I will stay again if I have a chance.

Horrible stay & things got stolen out of my backpack. WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND!

Reservation on booking didn't work, dirty pillows, noisy rooms, poor breakfast, ... Some things got stolen out of my backpack while it was in the luggage room (i asked the owner before leaving my backpack if it was watched and i got confirmation). The owner is super rude and didn't take any responsibility for the stolen things. The location is not ideal. I would never recommend this place, especially not after my things got stolen & i got insulted by the owner.

Recomendable Place to stay

The bathroom was clean with a hot shower. At the reception we found at any time very friendly people and we were allowed to use our room before checkin time, arriving with a nightbus. Located central, it’s a good base for shopping and exploring the restaurants around. You also find a touroffice in this house, that offered us a good price for cycling the deathroad (we compared with two other companies. The breakfast was simple.

York Bed and Breakfast

Not exactly opulent, but great location and good value.

Reviewed By sandy c

This review is for the top floor rooms. I can't remember how they were called- 'deluxe' or 'super' or something like that. Anyhow, a big comfy bed, flat screen cable tv, private bath, and a fantastic view. The location is about as central as you can get, just 2-3 blocks from Plaza Mayor de San Francisco, with mucho street eats, small shops, and a covered market. Breakfast was so skimpy (by my standards) that I didn't bother. Most other guests seemed to enjoy it though. If you have a bigger appetite there was a nice lady outside selling pastries and horchata, so it's all good. Now even though I do recommend York B&B for a budget traveller, there are a few drawbacks. Shower water was just warm, no elevator, bedside lamp didn't work, and again, breakfast wasn't sized for the gluttonous among us. But for this price- aboout 15 USD for a top floor room with private bath, I wouldn't complain. The staff arranges tours and outings if that interests you. Pro tip: If you are coming from the airport, hop on the mini bus and it will take you to Sagarnica, 3 blocks from the hotel, for only $.30 (if I remember correctly). Heading back to the airport though, a cab or ride share is a must, and the staff can arrange that for you. To sum it up: If you are looking for a private room on a budget, I don't think you'll do better.

Hostal Bellavista Inn

OK and decent hotel for the money and location

Reviewed By Muffingg

We stayed at Hostal Bellavista for 2 nights in total: one before and one after our trip to Uyuni and were satisfied with it overall. The hostel is very basic, so you can't expect luxuries and for the price that wouldn't be fair to expect anyway. We saw 2 different rooms (both on the first floor) and liked them overall. There is no heating in the rooms and hot water only runs for a limited amount of time (but you can stretch it as I experienced). Single glazing didn't make that any better and in Sep/Oct it was relatively cold. Luckily, however, you get lots of bedding. We were also pleasantly surprised to have received a room for 4 even though we only booked one for 2 persons. The view in our first room was at the Teleferico while the second night was towards the bus station. A little bit of noise was there but nothing too much. The location is honestly excellent! We ended up using the bus station 4 times in total (arriving in La Paz, leaving for Uyuni, returning to Uyuni, and leaving back to Peru) and couldn't have wished for anything more. The walk to the bus terminal is still a little difficult due to the altitude if you haven't acclimatised yet. Laundry is really cheap and fast and the hotel was nice enough to keep our luggage in a secured area for us on the final day as we were visiting La Paz all day before leaving for the bus back to Peru. Overall excellent location and a decent basic hostel. If you're not used to getting out of your comfort zone, don't stay here.
