Good Value

Not far from the shops and town centre, Spanish Friends school is a nice gem. The room and bathroom were extremely basic but ok- Its a backpacker budget. Breakfast was basic and the Spanish lessons were very good. I liked Gabrielle's teaching style and I would come back here if I visited Sucre

First choice for a reason

Reviewed By Juanito_Hayburg

I was uncertain as to where I was going to overnight in superb Sucrè, but whilst in Potosí, hostelmate Ahmedeo (Italian-Spañard) assured me that the COLORS HOUSE HOSTEL was very much the best place for me and they could easily accommodate my slight disability (I use a stick/Gimpwalk/dislike ascending/descending steps). I’m very glad I took his word, as well as the strong recommendation on TripAdvisor. I arrived by bus mid-day, excellent because I had ample daylight to Gimpwalk the medium-length distance. And, actually, there was a much greater benefit to my going slow (due to using a stick for my “aged out” weak knees/body) was that I could possibly find a new cap/tip for my cane. Sure enough, “Johnny” gave me excellent direction to another flooring store (San Lorenzo) which had not only caps, but a perfect cane tip (I bought two)! [I didn’t necessarily Gimpwalk any faster—I still had to watch where I put my feet/stick to avoid dog feces!] How satisfying, and such a great way to start my my visit in this magnificent community! Using google maps, my route was quite easy to follow, but I internally groaned when I saw I had to ascend steps. Thank goodness for handrails! I was warmly welcomed by Nayra, Pepsi & Anita. Once they saw my condition (and probably heard me grunting/groaning ascending the steps) they assigned me to matrimonial-2, which was downstairs on the ground level. What an incredible accommodation! No need to ascend/descend steps except for the delicious desayuno, attend a free movie (I brought brought the popcorn!), and checkout. Another perk of this wonderful hostel was laundry service; I could almost smell myself. I turned my rank clothes in the morning, it was ready by (19:00) that same day. Of course, one if the best benefits (besides the ground level room) was reliable WiFi. Nowadays, everybody lives by their cellphones and the all-important access is mandatory! The only reason for one less star are the stairs; anyone more disabled than myself (i.e., wheelchair) will not be able to access this amazing hostel, regardless of the friendliness of the staff! I wholeheartedly endorse this wonderful hostel with my hearty “iWheel of Approval!”

Dilapidated rooms

Stayed here as part of an intrepid tour. Nice on the outside, with a lovely sunny courtyard, but the rooms are old, dilapidated and freezing cold. Poor lighting and dodgy power points. Breakfast was poor and wifi intermittent. Location is great and security good, with a locked front gate and 24 hour reception.

Would be perfect with different staff

Reviewed By Jaskuwka

The hostel itself it’s super nice and quite, clean and with nice common areas. The only claim about the hostel is that the mixed dormitory is way too small for 8 beds, there’s no space at all for the backpacks and with a full room it’s a big mess. Now, what makes a big difference for most of backpackers it’s the staff, how welcomed you fell and how they treat you. On this side, it was a very bad experience. The staff and volunteers from Argentina made us feel unwelcome, uncomfortable with the very few questions we had and we overheard some negative comments from them about other guests. Never with a smile and always making group between themselves. It’s a real pity because I’m sure that with different staff it would be the perfect place to be in Sucre.

Cruz de Popayan Hostel

Beautiful 17th-century old colonial house located on the heart of Sucre. Large rooms with colonial details around to the large patios, hammocks and chairs are prepared to read your favorite book under the apricot tree.

A very basic place that was probably beautiful a long long time ago

Reviewed By leajasmins

The colonial building is charming, but not maintained well at all. We had to see 3 different rooms before finding one with (almost) no mold in the walls. Mold seems so be a serious problem here!!! We would have cancelled our reservation on the spot and moved to another place hadn't we arrived late and tired. The furniture is very basic. The service was OKish. Breakfast was good, made fresh for us. Wouldn't recommend unless profound renovations are done.

AVOID!

Reviewed By Arnie L

Arrived in Sucre and my usual hotel was full and as this place is just around the corner, took a chance on it for one night. BIG MISTAKE! VERY noisy due to street traffic. Not sure if sheets were clean. Sketchy bedding. Wifi didn’t work in the room. VERY VERY dated in room with absolutely nothing to write about. Actually like a dorm room: bed, one chair, small TV and small table. That’s it. Didn’t bother to have breakfast. Upon checking out, asked for a bill and that was a big deal with a very officious woman at the desk. On checking in, the receptionist appeared to be totally indifferent. And the “rub” was that my hotel is more than a little cheaper and MUCH more attractive even though breakfast is not included. Give this place a miss as much much nicer places within a short walk for less money and better ambience. Can’t believe this place is still open for the price they ask and for what they offer. Lastly, the room key holder had some kind of sticky substance on it! YIKES!!! ?
