do not, whatever you do, have the taster menu.7000rs (plus 25% tax and service charge), for food you cannot see, and there is barely enough on each course to taste.we found it to be very pretentious, black crockery, black lampshades with VERY low light levels.if the first bite of food is with your eyes, well, in this place you miss that bite!what we could see of it was a lot of style over substance.each course was eatable, and they did cater for me especially in that i cannot eat cheese, so altered a couple of dishes.none of the dishes would tempt me to go back and try a full version of them though, which , for a taster menu, would seem to be the point.the most ridiculous was that one meal, a tea infused chicken stock had, according to the menu, a cheese kebab.this turned out to be three very small cubes of cheese on a cocktail stick, on the side of the dish.service was patchy, different cutlery was brought out for each different course, well, for most of them, one course arrived without any cutlery at all, and we had to ask for it after delivery.aonther set was laid out differently for me than for my wife, on mine the fish knife was on the outside, on hers it was on the inside.service from the right was also sporadic at best.i am pretty sure that the food looked amazing, but in all honesty it was too dark to tell properly, the waiter even had to bring a torch to show us the menu, and other guests were using their mobile phones to illuminate their menus.Dear Guest,Thank you for sharing your experience with us.We are sorry to read that you were faced with such incidents during your dining experience with us which we assure you that we will be looking into very seriously.Black Coral has always stood out in its category as a unique dining experience which is famous for its low-light ambient lighting while dining. I've visited this place several times, but my most recent one was today was such a letdown. Food was mediocre, drinks had too little alcohol in them and the staff was distant and not friendly enough. The place looks unclean and untidy. Apparently, the management has been changed and it seems like it's affected. They didn't have beef even though this is the high season. When we informed the staff that we are not happy with everything they tried to give excuses without even listening.

Rather intriguing modern bijou hotel tucked away in back blocks of Negombo (close to international airport). Four villas only. Attentive service. Tuk tuks available for local transport and could arrange taxis for trips further afield.Thanks for reviewing your meal and for letting people know about Waterland. We love your description of Waterland as a jewel of a hotel.

I only comment on the restaurant (mid-range to fine dining) since we didn't stay in the rooms.We, 3 persons, went recently to Jive Galley for dinner, because we wanted to experience a relaxed evening in a calm environment. But it was not meant to be.First of all I ordered according to their card a Tiger bottle (500ml) and got served after few minutes a Tiger can (330ml) without a comment. I took the liberty to ask if there is no bottle anymore available as mentioned in the beverage card. After the staff closely checked their own card, they don't have bottles anymore. So I asked how much they would charge for the can if the bottle is 500 LKR. Then it took about 20 minutes and 5 involved persons to finally get the answer it is the same price. I decided finally to go for a Corona. The Corona took 5 times asking and another 20 minutes to be served, without being nicely cold, but I was not in a mood to wait another 20 minutes and had it in this condition. My friend asked if there is a special today and a waitress replied there would be crabs as special. He asked if he can see the crabs upfront. That was a bit of a hard task but on the end the chef came with raw crab legs on a small plate to show it to us. My friend inquired if it is possible to see the whole crab with body. The reply was another classic "Sorry we have only legs". Before the meal was served, as complimentary starter, the usual basket of small bread and a plate of butter was brought to the table. We sat there and waited if something would still come, but no. So we asked if we could have at least a knife to spread the butter or to cut the bread. We decided to go for Sri Lankan curry and twice a Tuna steak which was good, the portion size could be described as fine dining dimension.To top it off and make it the perfect evening out, the waiter took the dish from the table in a way that the breadcrumbs fell on my lap and didn't bother to say sorry. The food was good, the service was appalling and for a boutique hotel, as they call their self, really embarrassing.By coincidence friends from us were there as well for the first time this evening and they complained to us about the improper level of service.I can not recommend this place with such a painful service experience even though the food was good. There a plenty of places where the food is good too, you pay less and get a much better service.We have it seen once and I guess that is enough for us.
