Rolling CA 99 looking for lunch I searched the Manteca map and found Billie's Hillbille BBQ. Far better than any of the big BBQ chain outlets.With Ma & Pas Kettle playing on the big screen and Bluegrass music in the backgound I really enjoyed 2 pulled port sliders (you can get 1, 2 or 3), just the right portion and a reasonable price. DW had their Port Puffs, tasty, tender pulled port i deep fried pasty dough. Liked Pa's sauce as it had more kick than the Billie's Pride or the sweeter style Ma's Favorite. Service was personable and prompt. Owner told us the story of the place, it was going to be a chicken wings joint, but they swtiched to BBQ.Not a big place and a couple of mile off the highway, but on this day, at least, we found it well worth the search.

I love Webbers! This is due to change its name soon, however. It will soon be "Mama Webbers" of Manteca. If you haven't gone here, you're missing one of the best meals in the world. You get personal service, marvelous food, and you get to write on the walls! Visit Carissa and leave a message for others on the wall. Tell her that her favorite friend from Merced said hi.

When your wife is Portuguese, you might need to take the occasional road trip to buy sweet bread, linguica and Fagundes Brothers seasoning. Be aware that this is primarily a butcher shop, but they serve lunch and it is outstanding. There are a variety of grilled and smoked items to take home as well.That is what we did today, and while we were there we decided to sample their lunch offerings. We ordered a linguica sandwich with a side of red ranch potato salad, and a tri-tip sandwich with Portuguese beans. We were both super-happy with the food. Fagundes Brothers makes their own linguica. This was the spicy version, which has just the right amount of bite to make it interesting. The flavor is excellent. The roll was nice and fresh, and the house dressing makes a good accompaniment. The red ranch potato salad was probably the best potato salad I've ever eaten. I normally will eat only vinegar based (German-style) potato salad but this one was so good. Bacon, egg, black olives and red potatoes in this dressing are an excellent combo.The tri-tip sliced right off the grill out front was smoky and fall apart tender. One of the better grilled tri-tips I've eaten. The Portuguese beans were rich and smoky too, with slices of linguica and a spice we couldn't quite place. Maybe nutmeg? Sofa king delicious. They also just started smoking St. Louis ribs and they offered us. A sample. Damn was it good. Perfectly cooked and tender with a not overwhelming smoke flavor. Yeah, we bought a slab to take home for dinner. Absolutely worth the drive from Sacramento.
