Reviews on Hawaiian food in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii, United States. Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

Jackie Rey's Ohana Grill is a casual local's joint featuring fresh seafood, steaks, pasta and a variety of salads at affordable prices. The restaurant (named after our daughter) is the culmination of much hard work and the dedication of ourselves and our
We entered here last week for a lunch.....it was nice to see that they place was close to being filled. It did not disappoint. We had some scrumptious seafood during our lunch and even the homemade fries were above average. When we revisit this island, Jackie Rey's will definitely be a pit stop for us again!Aloha ecfoster--- Your descriptions of "scrumptious seafood" made me smile. I love that word. So.... I'm stoked you had a nice experience at my place--- do indeed make it a "pit stop" on your next visit to the Big Island. Till then--- Cheers, Paul-- the owner

Promises homemade cooking with the emphasis on Granmas cooking. The only thing is it's not. It's frozen chips, frozen breadcrumbed fish. Very disappointing, that said there is very little else in town if you want to eat. Very good service albeit disappointing food.

We feature a frequently changing international menu with a pacific emphasis and focus on locally sourced ingredients.
Husband and I had been dying to eat here. Last year, Hurricane Lane kept us away. Our server, Emily and her team set the bar for our entire anniversary vacation. We ordered every seafood item on the menu and each was more ono than the one before. The ahi was fresh and silky and amazing. We finished with lilikoi pie and the absolute best espresso ever brewed. We usually donât repeat restaurants, no matter how fantastic, but weâre going to make an exception for this one.

I randomly pulled into the Coffee Shack parking lot thinking I was just going to grab an iced coffee and keep driving while exploring the Big Island. Luckily, they just began their lunch menu and after seeing the view from the outdoor patio, I asked for a table and stayed for a meal. The Ono fish sandwich was delicious, prepared on fresh bread made at the restaurant. The view was PHENOMENAL and the staff were incredibly friendly (they also all kind of looked like models, which I was meaning to research after if that was a thing lol). The iced coffee was just ok.

From boat to table this is the place to get the Big Islands Fresh Fish. Service was top notch in helping us select the right fish to take back to our place and grill. Price per pound can be a tad pricey, but you cant beat the quality.

Our "take-out" style shop specializes in poke bowls and plates, featuring a variety of locally caught ahi tuna. Our poke is always fresh, never frozen...guaranteed! We also serve shrimp, tako and taegu poke. For those in your ohana who do not eat fish we
Ate her in 2013, last time we were on the Big Island. The poke here is fantastic! Added feather in their cap, they are serving in compostable take away containers. Prices have gone up (almost doubled) about 30% in last 6 years...but still competitive with other places and I think BEST poke in the area for sure.

Expect a little wait but worth it. Also expect to take some home. Great cheery service. Decided to try this on our way to several excellent farmer's markets in the area. A local recommended it. Meals are served on oval turkey platters. I like crispy bacon and theirs is deep fried so it is definitely crispy. As you can see from pictures portions are huge. I had the 2 eggs, corned beef hash, and french toast. The hash was served thin and crispy - very good but after seeing the kailua pork hash over fried rice that would be my recommendation. The french toast is a sweet bread but just standard stuff. They didn't leave it in the egg long enough to soak into the bread. Over medium eggs were perfect. I tried the hash browns- also large helping. The real surprise is their side of pancakes that comes with most egg meals. the serve 2 on these large oval platters. Nice and fluffy. The menu includes loco mocos and an assortment of meats like portuguese sausage and blood sausage. The menu was large enough to get you back for several different breakfasts and lunches.

Located in the heart of the Big Islands farm community is Peter Merriman's original restaurant; Merriman's Waimea. Chef/Owner Peter Merriman is one of the founders of Hawaii Regional Cuisine and uses 90% or more of local produce, fish and beef. All dishes
We have dined at Merrimanâs on Maui and on Kauai, each different from the other. This Big Island location, the original, is different yet. Interesting starters of quesadilla and Israeli salad. The Parker Ranch steaks were amazing and beautifully prepared. Not usually a fan of mashed potatoes, I was pleased that mine were seasoned lightly with jalapeno. Cozy place, great menu and pleasant server.

We locals love this place, recently renamed Kona Grill. Located in a blue-painted warehouse, with picnic tables outside and inside, the restaurant's seafood is fantastic, the home-made sauces unique, featuring unusual sides like seaweed salad. As if that weren't enough, the friendly staff is full of aloha. Utterly un-touristy!

If you want authentic Hawaiian food, this is the place to go. It's a little out of the way, but worth it. For out of towners, I recommend you calling ahead and placing a take out order to bring back to where you are staying and eating there.
