I am not sure what we were expecting when we came to the restaurant. Papaaloa is pretty much out of the way, and we stopped after a day of hiking and sightseeing. The wait staff was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered the Homoku mushroom stirfry, and it was really quite delicious. It would easily stack up with a five-star restaurant on the east coast of the United States. The general store was also fun to look through and extremely well stocked.

Award winning unique drinks, acai bowls, sandwiches, gourmet local ice creams & house made soft serve!
This was an awesome late-lunch stop on our visit to Hilo from Kona. Everything about this funky little eatery was exceptional, from the friendly, young staff, to the selections of food, smoothies, and ice cream, to the decor.I ordered a pork sandwich that was hot, delicious, and came with a side of purple taro chips--all delicious, and large--I was more than filled up with my sandwich. My wife got a turkey sandwich, and our daughter, not terribly hungry yet on vacation, convinced her parents to let her order an ice cream sundae for "lunch". Between the three of us we also shared a smoothie.So. Many. Good. Tastes. This hole-in-the-wall place, off the main business street in Hilo, is well-worth your time to seek it out and have some great island grub.

My husband and I stopped here with friends for breakfast before a big day of sightseeing. We ate upstairs, open-air with a view onto the ocean and warm breezes. Most of us had the Big Island Basics breakfast and one had the Belgian Waffle. We all enjoyed our meal, plentiful servings! My husband did not care for the Portuguese sausage but I had plenty of bacon to share. Coffee was very good. Our service was friendly and prices reasonable. If you eat here, do note that the restrooms are upstairs, as we found at most multi-level restaurants we visited. I don't know if there was an elevator.

After several attempts to find a decent pizza, I decided to check out the menu and atmosphere of a cafe next to the art gallery we had come to visit. A couple from Ohio had just finished a combination pizza and they remarked how good it was. We came back two days later and tried it out, and it was far and away the best pizza of our month long stay.

Cafe Ono is located near the Volcano. It is a charming small resturant and gallery. The grounds are lovely! Service was good. Limited but interesting menu. I had the lasagna which came with soup and salad. Husband has the chili. Both were tasty. After eating , browsed the lovely gallery which has a variety of lovely things. This was a treat! Definitly worth the visit

Stopped in for breakfast... very good, local food. Wasnât sure about the presentation because Iâm picky about my food touching. It was awesome though. Husband had the breakfast for champions .... he enjoyed it. Apparently Vienna sausages and spam is a thing ... he tried it and was pleased.

I randomly pulled into the Coffee Shack parking lot thinking I was just going to grab an iced coffee and keep driving while exploring the Big Island. Luckily, they just began their lunch menu and after seeing the view from the outdoor patio, I asked for a table and stayed for a meal. The Ono fish sandwich was delicious, prepared on fresh bread made at the restaurant. The view was PHENOMENAL and the staff were incredibly friendly (they also all kind of looked like models, which I was meaning to research after if that was a thing lol). The iced coffee was just ok.

Expect a little wait but worth it. Also expect to take some home. Great cheery service. Decided to try this on our way to several excellent farmer's markets in the area. A local recommended it. Meals are served on oval turkey platters. I like crispy bacon and theirs is deep fried so it is definitely crispy. As you can see from pictures portions are huge. I had the 2 eggs, corned beef hash, and french toast. The hash was served thin and crispy - very good but after seeing the kailua pork hash over fried rice that would be my recommendation. The french toast is a sweet bread but just standard stuff. They didn't leave it in the egg long enough to soak into the bread. Over medium eggs were perfect. I tried the hash browns- also large helping. The real surprise is their side of pancakes that comes with most egg meals. the serve 2 on these large oval platters. Nice and fluffy. The menu includes loco mocos and an assortment of meats like portuguese sausage and blood sausage. The menu was large enough to get you back for several different breakfasts and lunches.

My husband and I were so surprised to find a French restaurant in Hawaii that we just had to check it out. Turned out to be absolutely delicious and we actually went back the very next morning for breakfast! The lovely Frenchwoman we spoke with (whom I assume was the owner) even remembered us and kindly welcomed us back. I especially enjoyed their croque madame and the Oh Là Là crepe. Please do yourself a favor--take a break from the loco mocos and shave ice and try this place out. C'était vraiment délicieux!
