What a pity. This restaurant could be so much more, if someone would care to manage it properly. We had studied the menu and wine list on the web, and reserved a table. A bit expensive considering the rustic brewery restaurant milieu, but the menu promised fine dining. I wanted to start with a glass of Paul Goerg Champagne, but they were out of it. Had a glass of Lanson instead. The drink was served lukewarm. Decided not to mention it. Planned to have the set fish menu, but the fish of the day from Lake Saimaa turned out to be salmon, which is definitely not a species of the lake. The waiter explained apologetically that the kitchen had not gotten enough local fish. We were told that everything else on the menu would be available as set. Ended up choosing from the a la carte list and selected some nice wines to go along. The starter - Mellow crab soup, pike perch brandade, dill oil and malt bread (13,60 €) arrived. Except that there was no bread and no pike perch brandade. When we asked where the other half of the promised components was, our at this point embarrassed waiter returned from the kitchen telling that they were out of these two ingredients too. The soup dish was no good. Our main courses - Roasted organic baby lamb sirloin etc.(32,40€) and Marbled beef fillet etc. (36,20€) - were laid out beautifully and tasted wonderful. BUT the size of the portions was minuscule. Something you would expect and accept to have as a part of a tasting menu, but definitely not as a normal main course costing over 30 euros. The desserts - Cherry chocolate fondant, homemade cherry ice-cream (10,80€) and Braised rhubarb, barley cookie, basil-mascarpone, roasted white chocolate and rhubarb foam 11,20€ - were both food for the eyes. The first one also for the taste buds. The latter's idea was exciting, but end result a bit watery. It is not the waiters' fault, if the kitchen is out of ingredients. And it's not the kitchen's fault, if waiters don't inform the customers of the changes on the menu. Everyone seemed to do their best, but since no-one really cared or took overall responsibility, it was the customer who suffered. I found it also somewhat unprofessional and deceptive, that they kept serving the half-of-a-soup, as well as the fake lake Saimaa fish to other customers arriving after us, as if nothing was out of ordinary. Maybe the customers here don't care either. As an apology the restaurant did not charge us for the pre-dinner drinks and charged only half of the starter price. Yet the two of us paid over 160 euros for a dinner that was more like an ordeal and left us feeling disappointed - and hungry.

Paviljonki

This lunch restaurant is a true gem in Savonlinna, not known by many visitors. It's a bit out of city, but not too much: just across the Kyrönsalmi bridge, approx. 1,5 km from the Market Place, and it's open Mon-Sun 11 am - 4 pm. Paviljonki is the teach

A long time favourite (10 years or so) of our family, worth a visit or two every summer. Paviljonki is a true gem in Savonlinna if you are looking for a reasonably priced high-quality lunch without the normal tourist crowds during the Opera Festival. This is a teaching restaurant of a restaurant school, so you can be sure that everything is made by themselves with a great care. Paviljonki serves a daily lunch buffet of fresh local food, with cold fish, meat and veggie appetizers, hot soup, salads, good bread, a main dish plus a dessert with tea and coffee. The food is delicious, service always friendly - and you can eat as much as you can. They have A la Carte, too, but we always take the buffet. It’s a fixed price, and in 2011 you need to pay EUR 14 per person on weekdays, EUR 19 on Sundays. Children get a discount and toddlers eat for free. Milk and water come for free. Soft drinks, beer, wine etc. are available at extra cost. The business hours are 11 am to 4 pm every day. Sometimes Paviljonki is closed to the public on summer Saturdays, as it’s a popular place to hold wedding receptions. Check this beforehand in their www-pages (unfortunately in Finnish only). See the list of dates under ”Lounaslista”: if you find word ”suljettu” then they are closed that day. Located a bit outside the city, at the other end of Kyrönsalmi bridge, Paviljonki is less than 2 km away from the Market Place. It’s the white pavillion-like building (thus the name) on your left side when you come from the city. You can’t turn left here, but do so in the next intersection and drive around the block. Paviljonki is just before a small marina and has a spacious parking lot. The restaurant itself is on the second floor, washrooms downstairs.Paviljonki has a high-class feeling with white table cloths and all, yet it is a casual place. No need to dress up! The atmosphere is peaceful and friendly and they have a good reason to be proud of their young chefs and waiters. I just love this restaurant and highly recommend it to anyone visiting Savonlinna.

We spotted this restaurant already last year and for this visit we made reservation for all four nights. So this time we could almost get through the menu. The appetizers are mostly fine dining style - very small portions but tasty and nice. We liked "Lightly smoked sugar-salted pike" and "Krouvi´s antipasto" the most.In mains I preferred the risotto and the pike-perch. The risotto I put to my top 3 of all time. We also loved the fried vendace and lamb neck. The steak was OK but not the greatest. (We never made it to the burger and the Caesar salad.)We had all the four desserts, one for each night. The clear winner was the chocolate mousse with the rest as good runners up. Note: the cheese may sound like standard choice, but wait 'til you get a taste of the caramel dressing...The service was not as solid as the kitchen. The first two nights everything was perfect, later not so much. But we were very satisfied to the experience. Highly recommended!

An excellent variety of beers, a little shallow in drafts but more than 100 different ones in bottles. Also a good selection of scotch malts, some rare bottlings, too. A cosy and relaxed atmosphere and a very friendly staff. Recommended to folks wishing to have a pint (or two - or more). Not the best place to for the cheapest Finnish lager, but it is not meant to be that, either. So, taste a couple (or more) different ones, and expand your (beer) horizons :)And if wish to have some food, there are other places; Sillansuu offers only some snacks (but this is more than compensated by the excellent beer!)
