Parque Nacional La Tigra

Beautiful wilderness park about 20 km outside of Tegucigalpa. The site has many kilometres of hiking trails and is terrific for bird enthusiasts, as it's an easily accessible place to see quetzals, trogons, toucans and more.

La Tigra is less than an hour from the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, and is absolutely amazing. At an altitude of over 5,000 feet it is cool and often shrouded in mists near the top. The trails are perfect for walking and for the most part are well marked but because it is so large a guide is recommended and very inexpensive. This is old growth cloud forest with a huge variety of plants, flowers, orchids and wildlife. It particularly is a birders paradise. Spend the day. It is well worth it!

Parque Nacional Montana de Celaque

The Montana de Celaque National Park is one of the main protected areas that Honduras has, located in the western part of the country between the Departments of Lempira, Copan and Ocotepeque. Its main tourist attraction is Cerro Las Minas, which is the highest point in the country with a height of 2,849 meters above sea level.

We got a tuk tuk from Gracias (100 Lempira) to the visitor centre which is undergoing building work. After some confusion a man arrived on motorbike and issued us with our tickets (120 Lempira). We signed the book, we were the only hikers in the park. The walk is well sign posted and easy to follow but steep in places as you climb from 1400m to 2000m through forest. We had a good view of the Cascada and the round trip took about 3.5 hrs. We walked from the visitor centre the 2km to the main road and managed to catch a tuk tuk back to Gracias (50 Lempira).

Cerro Azul Meámbar National Park or ‘PANACAM’ features three trails 0.3km, 0.7km and 7.0km. The park has waterfalls, creeks, lookouts over Lake Yojoa, tropical and cloud forest, and a variety of birds, plants, trees and flowers. The trails are well-marked and well-maintained. The trailhead is located at Panacam Lodge (directions: turn off CA-5 at La Guama, headed up to Santa Elena and follow the many signs to the park). This is an excellent hike with hard to beat views. Highly recommend.

Finca la cantadora

This is a charming place, with nice food, wine and a perfect view. I found the staff to be very friendly and helpful - the owners were equally charming. If you are driving, be aware that the last mile or more is on a dirt road - but well worth it for the view.
