Yasur View Lodge

Grade 2 Highly Active all night and day!

Reviewed By Andrew R

The Accommodation is directly across the road from the Tanna Volcano Safari Tour, where after traditional dancing and offerings for the Mountain from the local tribal people, tour groups are whisked upwards in open-backed 4WD utilities with roll-bars ascending through lush jungle tracks to the Cone, with 8 viewing points which are weather-specific. $8 AUD for adults, less for children. The Bungalow I shared on the first night with my 2 boys (8 and 10) was elegantly spartan with hardwood comfortable beds, and Bamboo Thatched walls built in the traditional manner surrounded with lovely gardens on the ash soil. My kids played around with the owner's children. The view from the handcrafted Bamboo deckchairs was awe-inspiring! Mount Yasur rumbled and cracked almost continuously, releasing gases swirling into the atmosphere, it almost appeared to have it's own weather system! Thomas, our host kindly offered my boys and I the Tree House for the 2nd day at no extra cost. The view from the Tree House was spectacular and when Yasur cracked and rumbled in the night the thatched Bamboo Walls resounded with the force. Sitting on the darkened balcony Yasur glowed throughout the night. At 3:30 in the morning the Safari Tour departs to the Cone of Yasur. I watched the tiny shapes of 30-50 people silhouetted by the glow in the early morning at Station 8, that looks over the lava pools. I witnessed hot lava shoot up vertically from the Cone and go, by my reckoning 30 to 40 metres above the Safari Party, followed by a huge percussive BOOM which resonated across the Valley. Our host Thomas attested to the fact that Yasur was extremely active during our stay, having lived in the Village all of his life. Our Tree House overlooked the lush 1/4 acre or so of vegetable gardens at the front of the property. 25 steps up, but with well-spaced steps was all part of the outdoor adventure for the boys and I but it could prove to be a climb for people who experience difficulty with movement, especially if you need to go to the bathroom in the night! The sounds of the chickens, local dogs, the Lodge's Cat with kittens and children playing resonate from Village to Village. It is truly a Garden of Eden and the locals are lovely, friendly people who are always willing to greet a stranger with a smile, a wave and a friendly "Ola". The food portions were very generous and there were lots of rice and vegetable dishes, supplemented with protein. The Poulet Poisson was a highlight. My 8 year old doesn't like fish at all, but he loved the taste and Texture of the Chicken Fish! The price per day for food is excellent value ($8 AUD) per day, children are slightly less. There is Vanuatu-brewed Tusker Beer available in the Restaurant for $3.20 AUD, a great drop at a very fair price! Of particular mention was a Beef Curry with mixed Vegetables and Rice that was based on a richly built broth that was undoubtedly the finest dish we were fortunate enough to be served in our time on Tanna. Anjus is an excellent cook! Our Host Thomas could not have been more friendly and accommodating. He was very open and always willing to share his Tanna Kulture with us. My children and some French kids ran around with the Local kids playing tips and hide and seek into the early evening on the first night . It really felt like a lesson in "it takes a Village to raise a child" My kids and I also took a tour with Thomas as our guide on the 2nd morning of our stay across the Volcanic Plain and across and though river-beds to the beautiful Nazareth Falls. Spectacular twin-falls from a hanging Valley that shower into a pristine swimming hole in a beautifully-maintained garden of Eden with incredible Vistas, of towering mountains, covered in huge tree ferns, soaring birds of prey hgh over, catching the updrift of the SE Trade winds high above and small and swift swallows in the grotto of the falls. Thomas washed his car downstream and chatted to the local ladies who take the gate-fee (around $16 AUD) whilst the kids and I had the falls to ourselves! The power of the larger of the falls was impressive and the kids and I played around for at least 3/4 of an hour and dried ourselves in the sun on the bamboo bathing seats. Truly a magical morning outing! The Restaurant has large bench tables looking sideways out to the mountain which encourages conversations between guests from all around the world. The local Lenakel Bread bought fresh was a hearty start with home grown, freshly harvested Tropical Fruits and excellent freshly brewed Tanna Coffee. There is also a Menu of the tours available, starting from around $13 AUD. The Hot Springs is a must, when the seawater mixes with the outgoing tide the springs become warm pools that flow briskly over hot black volcanic sand. This beach is also the spiritual home of the "John Frum Movement". 300 metres further upstream, there is a Hot Spring that the locals cook in that bubbles away at near boiling point. It was $16 entry fee for my 2 kids and I paid to the locals for entry to the pools, which was incredibly reasonable for such a priceless experience! The kids and I really enjoyed the stay and it was an experience we'll never forget for as long as we live! Tangkyu Tumus Thomas & his Family & his Staff for making our stay at your Lodge such a rich experience!

Port Olry Tree House

Paradise

Reviewed By KerrieCC

Angelic is the most beautiful person who took care of me in every way. Accom - treehouse - bungalow- shower and toilet in a tree- living in nature with nature! Beachfront beauty - the divine sound of the ocean day and night. Port Olry is a lovely town and I feel privileged that I was there during the Sanma (province) celebrations and festival - tried lots of lap lap, drank coconut water straight from the shell, met curious school kids along the way, watched the sports competitions, walked miles, swam, and relaxed. I ate all local foods - vegetarian- and tried traditional dishes. Loved this time and will be back. Perfect for those looking to avoid the typical resort experience of alcohol and westernisation, meet local people, and enjoy pristine nature. The sea varied - it had periods of total calm and times where it was a bit too rough for me to swim, there were sunny days and cloudy/rainy days. There were beautiful beach sunrises and I really felt at peace.

Also the guest house has a great location for local attractions and the deck where we had our meals has an amazing view over the ocean and the islands. Which is a great plus!

Great location and fantastic accommodation for extended family

Reviewed By Greg K

Stayed at Surfside for 8 days (in October 2019). We, a family of 6 with 4 adult children loved the accommodation, a 3 bedroom, 2 story villa, with 3 bathrooms, kitchen , laundry, 2 dining areas and personal pool. The villa catered really well for the 6 of us. We never felt we were getting under each others feet or were cramping each other. It was my wife's birthday and she loved that we were all able to be in the same villa. The location of Surfside was excellent for us, a little bit out of Port Vila (about 10 minutes in a mini bus) , and our front door literally 3 metres from the beach. Because of the nearly always present breeze (wind) it never felt overly humid and we all slept very comfortably. Katia and Vanessa are exceptional hosts and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. The beach is a coral beach, so its preferable to wear reef shoes. There were surfers making the most of the reef break most days as were Kite surfers. Breakas resort is only about 100 meters down the beach and we frequented them regularly for coffee, drinks and sometimes meals, including takeaways one evening. It was always easy and quick to get transport into Port Vila with the local mini buses. We hired a car from World Cars for a couple of days and found them wonderful to deal with as well. Overall a great week, couldn't have asked for more. Thanks to everyone at Surfside for your personal attention throughout the week - it was much appreciated.

Luxurious hideaway

Reviewed By SJaKiwi

Palm house is a luxurious hideaway from the world. The location is beautiful being set on a private farm with private beaches with crystal clear water. At low tide the pool is a great place to relax.Short walks away are deep rock-pools fantastic for snorkelling as these contained an abundance of colourful fish and coral. The villas are private with a relaxed elegance with sea views. Miguel and Carolina are wonderful hosts and chefs, the food was fresh and delicious. They both wanted to make our stay as wonderful as possible and we want to thank them both. They offered to organise other activities around the island but we didn’t want to leave this little area of paradise. We felt very lucky that we chose Palm House as the place to spend our holiday in Vanuatu. Palm House has only recently opened as a boutique hotel, soon it will be well known and will be difficult to book as it will become so popular. My advice is book soon and prepare to unwind from everyday life for a short while.
