6 nights in a 3 bedroom villa with plunge pool and beach out the front.... what more could you ask for..... well, beautiful grounds and gardens, service with big smiles, nothing too much trouble but in island time! Somewhat isolated but so relaxing and enjoyable. Picked up from airport by Marius from Go Vanuatu Tours. 20 min drive out to Villas. Did round island tour with Marius who shared his knowledge and pride of his island. Visited the Cascades, Blue Lagoon and Turtle sanctuary..... so amazing. Birthday lunch at Vila Chaumieres..... delicious. Chef made birthday cake and owner iced it!! very much appreciated. Delightful owners, beautiful setting and delicious food..... highly recommend Angelfish Cove, Go Vanuatu Tours, Water taxi and Vila Chaumieres.

Kooyu Villas

Lovely and relaxing

Reviewed By Lily W

We stayed at Kooyu for a week in July. It was really nice, the villa is lovely and spacious, the manager Brad was kind and helpful and the staff were lovely too. The rooms were nice and clean and spacious. The kitchen has most basics you need for cooking etc. It is a bit further away from town than you expect - this is nice for peace and quiet but means getting supplies is a bit more of a trek without a car. It’s a self catering accommodation- You have to bring all your food with you, there is a bit of tea and sugar and oil provided, and there was some fruit, milk and a baguette. It’s a good idea to get stuff from town on your way there as there are no nearby shops. You can arrange the staff (they were there most of the time on weekdays but not on weekends) to call you a taxi/bus to take you to town and they will often wait for you at the supermarket and then bring you back again. If the staff are not there you can walk a few short way to nearby resorts to get them to call a car for you. But better to be a bit organised. You can go to one of the 2 nearby resorts to eat if you want a break from cooking. We loved the beach bonfire and loved cooking our dinner on it, including the tasty fresh fish the Brad (the manager) dropped off to us one day. Bring some marshmallows from home for the kids to toast on the bonfire. Beware when booking that only 2 of the 4 bungalows have a pool. I thought we were getting a pool as that’s what it appears to be in all the photos and facilities listed in Booking.com but when we arrived we found out we had a bungalow without a pool. The staff were apologetic and compensated us for the misunderstanding. The ocean here is the best snorkelling I have ever seen from shore, we saw hundreds of different fish, so close, a sea turtle, a sea snake (a bit scary but there was only 1 and it wasn’t interested in us at all). Bring your own snorkelling gear. I really enjoyed using the paddle boards and going for easy paddles along the reef. The ocean is very tidal and even at high tide it’s shallow water over the coral directly outside the house, and the coral is exposed at low tide and you can walk on it and see things in the rock pools. Bring reef shoes!! You can go 50m either side of the house to areas that have dug out the coral to create a channel that you can get past the coral to swim.

Way beyond any expectations !

We were going to Espiritu Santo to volunteer at the hospital after Tropical Cyclone Harold went through. We stayed at Village de Santo because it was one of the few places still standing. Despite the damages, the lack of electricity and of communications on the island and despite the Covid-19 related state of emergency, Nabil and his awesome team treated us with the most heart warming humanity we all need. I would definitely recommend this place, even at the world's end !

away from the tourist trail

First time at Mahi Mahi, stayed in 2 Br Villa out the back with my partner and 13 year old daughter. The Villa quickly felt like our own beach house and we self catered via the Luganville markets which were a highlight - never have, and never will taste organic produce like that again. Paradise! The beach front Nakamal was perfect reading spot. The location in Santo is 15 minutes from shops / Luganville on beautiful clear waters, white sandy beach, quiet and restful. Only ever a few other people swan at what felt like our own private beach. Large tides without waves so good for Canoeing and exploring. View of the next large Island is directly in front. Jim and Linda were welcoming and hospitable, even drove my partner to the Dr when he was sick and allowed us an extra day to relax when our flight was delayed by the frustrating Air Vanuatu. It POURED with rain the whole week except for our last day (cyclone in Fiji apparently) so it was enforced relaxation which added to the sense of escaping somewhere else. I found the rain quite beautiful at times, frustrating at other times limiting our ability to get out and about. Our drenched clothes didn't quite recover from mouldy smell during horse trail ride, which was beautiful nonetheless. But it was an experience of the tropics in full flight. A main highlight was the driver (Jim organised) - Tusty, a Ni-Van local who was very generous and tolerant of our numerous questions. The life of coconut trees was super interesting. Tusty drove us up the coast, into town, out to dinner. He gave us a direct sense of local community life and I would highly recommended hiring Tusty for the week. Only limitations were the rain, which can't be helped, and Air Vanuatu who caused random whole day flight delays upon arrival and return. If you factor in the extra time for Air travel I would say Santo, and Mahi Mahi, offer a genuine relaxed escape away from tourist trail and connected to local life in the most beautiful of places. Thanks Jim, Linda (and Tusty - please pass on!)

Hidden Cove Eco Retreat was just wonderful. The tented villa was magnificent. Very comfortable bed and bedding and lovely to go to sleep and wake up with the sound of waves. Delicious breakfast every morning. She our host was lovely - there when we needed her but otherwise we had our privacy. We used the bikes to tide 14km round trip to Turtle Bay for lunch. We also took a day trip with Tusty up to Champagne Beach and Port Olry. The colour of the water has to be seen to be believed. Highly recommend this place for a relaxing but luxurious getaway. But remember also it is not the Gold Coast so don't expect cocktails and waiters. But do expect gorgeous views, magical waves and nature at its finest.
