Tropicana Motel & Backpackers

Affordable and welcoming

Reviewed By lucas315

We enjoyed our stay here for 3 nights. The place is central and right down the street from the market. The staff were very welcoming, the room was clean, had a comfortable bed, and hot water. There was also a pretty well equipped kitchen so you could cut down costs by cooking. Didn't have any trouble with noise, and there was a security guard there every night. The room we had had a ceiling fan, but there were some floor fans around.

Once in a lifetime experience: Full cultural and lifestyle immersion

Reviewed By 430jennyz

Me and my husband stayed with Kalo and his family at the Malog Bungalows 22 Dec - 26 Dec 2019 as we were doing the multi-day canoeing trip. It was truly one of the best travel experiences that we ever had and we would highly recommend for people to visit! Why was it so special? - Total cultural immersion as we stayed with Kalo and his family for days in the village with very few tourists. Everyone we met were genuinely warm, nice and curious. - Experience a completely different way of living, where villagers are still adopting a hunting and gathering lifestyle. For city people like us, it was incredible to experience this and realizing that Kalo's 8 year old sun was more equipped for survival than us. Program / Itinerary: We did the 3 night 4 days canoeing tour. Kalo came to pick us up from the Lamap airport and we went by canoe to our first campsite in the Maskelyne island. Kalo, Abel (our guide) and the four boys (Kalo's two younger sons and their two cousins who were on their winter break) had already put up the tents and set it up. After breakfast we went out to do some snorkeling, spear fishing, papaya picking, coconut gathering as well as crab catching etc. We also cooked with the guys and enjoyed a beautiful meal with crab curry, grilled fish, lobster curry and snails as well as fresh fruit. The day after we went canoeing / sailing to two other islands and had lunch in small village. The villagers prepared a feast of local food that was delicious. Since it was Christmas we went back to Malog Bungalows, where we stayed for two nights. We still did a canoe trip to Turtle island (must do as it is a beautiful beach) and went snorkeling in the local clam conservatory. Rooms: Very clean rooms at the Bungalow. Shared toilets and showers with fresh water (only cold). Food: Delicious and fresh food mainly consisting of fish, seafood (we even got a newly catched lobster) and fresh fruits. Both Kalo and his wife are excellent cooks. They even made Lap lap when we asked for it (didn't realize it was such a process). Getting here: We flew from Port Vila airport to Lamap airport with Air Vanuatu. There are two flights per week with a small 20 people plan - felt very safe as the pilots seemed top on things. We got to sit just behind the open cockpit so it was a great experience in itself. Usually you can get tickets online (recommend booking in advance) directly on Air Vanuatu's website. However, when we booked it seemed booked out online but we managed to get waitlist tickets through Trek Vanuatu. I think otherwise Kalo can help to arrange as well. How to book: Browse Kalo's website and email them about availability. Flight tickets to be booked on Air Vanuatu's website or email Trek Vanuatu or Kalo. Tip: Make sure to bring torches, coral shoes, plenty of mosquito spray and sunscreen, first aid kit. Kalo has snorkels and fins but I think bringing your own would be good to make sure that everything fits. We also bought some small gifts to the family and the school which was appreciated. We bought everything in Port Vila Supermarket.

Walking distance to town

Great price, and only a short stroll to town (10mins). There was a rooster (who woke up at 5am) right out the back of our room, but that's part of the fun of staying in Vanuatu. You'll be pretty hardpressed to find anywhere free of roosters, go to sleep when it gets dark, get up when the natural alarm clock wakes you :)

Good value

We stayed here after our trip to Espiritu and Malekula, it was great to have a hot shower and a comfortable bed to sleep on. We didn't have any problems with noise and the size of the room was just what we needed. Nice infinity pool. Hotel is conveniently located close to Port Villa's center (shopping and produce market also restaurants). As a recommendation, don't choose this hotel as your main stay during a visit to Vanuatu, there is so much to see and experience in the island. We stayed at different hotels during our stay (specially locally owned ones) and that worked out great. It gave us the opportunity to take in the culture, the people and the beauty of the island!

I stayed at Paray Lodge in October 2019 & would most definitely refer to it as a low budget hostel NOT a hotel. The WiFi is incredibly slow, the fridge doesn’t work properly, rats are constantly running under the floorboards in the open air kitchen & behind the cupboards, the shower is cold & there is no mosquito protection. During my stay, the dorm room was full & there was no air conditioning or even a fan. It was stifling & I was unable to sleep. The whole place is in need of repair & despite the staff doing their best, it has a very run down feel. Not a pleasant experience!

An absolutely sensational place to stay, eat and drink. Beautiful views, great location (only 5 mins drive, 15 min walk to DownTown Vila), friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Daniel and the troops there will make you feel right at home. And what can I say about the food - incredible! Cannot wait to get back there.
