Family run hotel with small holding

Reviewed By Paula N

This little hotel has it all. Clean, comfy with a good range of toiletries and a room with views towards Potes and the mountains around. We were intrigued to see the patron training his griffon vulture (?), feed his horses and then hear the peacocks in the morning. Breakfast was initially disappointing with two slices of thick white sliced toast, but do leave space for the Spanish equivalent of welsh cakes that arrive later. An experience!

A Stopover from the ferry to Santander

We stopped over for only a night but there's plenty to do in the area if you plan to stay. The hostess spoke excellent English, the accommodation could not be faulted - a lovely old house well renovated, a tranquil spot just off the road in a town with restaurants, bars and shops. Great breakfast and a comfy large double.

Hospedaje Javier

Disappointing

Reviewed By Julian S

We stayed for a week during the peak season in one of the new (since 2014 apparently) little self-catering apartments, which had a nice balcony overlooking Noja town in the distance and the mountains and coastline beyond. Do not confuse this new block of holiday apartments, which is on the outskirts, with the older hostel/apartments located in the centre of the village, which are also owned and run by Javier and his family. The apartments are clean and modern, and best suited for couples and small families who are looking for a place with plenty of facilities, most of which were free of charge. These include both indoor (heated, salt water) and outoor (not heated) pools, two barbecues, a well eqipped games room (but no board games), outdoor children's play area, a good little gymnasium and a laundry room with both washing machines and tumble driers. The games room had table tennis (bats and balls provided), a pool table, air hockey, table football and numerous, though aging, video games. During peak season every single parking space is used; some people didn't park well and occupied two spaces. In our apartment, the Wi-Fi reception was generally quite poor although it did work most of the time. However, it seemed to work fine in the gym. Be careful when unfolding the dining table in the apartment, ours fell apart the first time we opened it. The toaster provided was too small. There was a coffee pot but no kettle although, to be fair, not many people use them in Spain. The vitroceramic hob was a one, but it only had two rings. The minimum amount of cutlery and kichen utensils were provided. We were missing one knife and two teaspoons. There was clearly a big problem with general maintenance; our front door didn't close properly, so we had to keep it locked at all times to stop it from blowing open, the only smoke detector didn't work, one of the two T.V. remotes had flat batteries (new ones were provided), the bathroom towel holder was hanging off, the toilet was very smelly, the bath had no showerhead, although we did have a separate shower cubicle, and neither the gymnasium nor indoor pool clocks were working which made things a bit more complicated as all the facilities closed at 10pm (and opened at 9am). The two picnic benches were made from old railway sleepers with sticky tar that stuck to our clothes, ruining one item of clothing. The drain cover was missing from the bottom of the outdoor pool. The pool was fenced off to protect small children, however the latch on the gate didn't work, so an unattended child would be able to get in. The biggest irritation for us was the small fridge-freezer, which was not installed correctly, as it had no ventilation at the back at all, so it could not get cold. I resolved the problem by pulling it out and relocating it next to the kitchen units. Javier provided us with an extension cable the next day, despite insisting that all his fridges work fine - I very much doubt that is true. On the plus side, there was always plenty of hot water and the hairdryer worked OK. I'm no expert on jacuzzis, but we had to fill ours up for it to work. We particularly liked the indoor pool and large jacuzzi, which we used almost every day. Another thing that needs pointing out is that you have to go to the beach by car. It may look close on a map, but the road is very steep, with no foothpath. So, all in all, one of those places that may look great in a brochure but sadly not quite as good in the end due to all the "little" problems. My suspicions about having to pay in cash, up front, were confirmed. I don't think we will be coming back.

Excellent accomodation walking distance from Somo

Reviewed By Ritabix

We stayed here for 3 nights in August 2015. Fantastic room but beware if you are not well acquainted with your room mate that both the bath and shower are located in the one space (so its a bed/bath/shower room). The toilet is separate however. High ceilings and lots of space with a view over the courtyard and breakfast room. There is a nice space also for sitting in the evening down stairs and the lady manager kindly put our cava/wine in a little fridge so that we could have a cold pre-dinner drink before leaving each evening. Breakfast was ok. We didn't have any other meals here (not sure if they are available). Very clean premises. A 10-15 minute walk from Somo central. Coming from Somo its up a hill! The centre of Somo is quite commercial, lots of surf schools and no typical Spanish plaza.

Rustic, Bucolic charm

Reviewed By bridget b

My husband and I spent a Thursday night at El Teju thanks to its most gracious owner, Lourdes. We mistakenly chose the wrong date in booking but she took us in anyway. Such rustic charm in a natural setting afforded a good night’s sleep to then enjoy the bucolic setting of a small Cantabria hamlet (the lovely breakfast, an added plus!)—we’ll be back!

Quaint country house

Reviewed By mohawkredbull

Stopped here on our way back to Santander. Find it via Booking.com and very pleased. We had a room in the roof, which had plenty of character. Beds comfortable, good sized bathroom and decent shower. Breakfast was also fine. Beautiful old building with plenty of character. Has it’s own bar, but we did not arrive until 23:45 so too late to sample. Would stay here again.
