Excellent overnight stay

Reviewed By Anita S

A perfect hotel for our overnight stay in Evera. The common areas and our room were spotlessly clean, very quiet and comfortable. The bed was excellent. The breakfast on the patio was outstanding. Special regards to the manager Carlos who gave us restaurant recommendations and an overview of sites in the city. He even contacted our taxi to return for a bag we had left at the hotel. We would definitely stay at this hotel again when we visit Evora, hopefully for two nights next time.

All in one casual hotel

We spent 2 nights here arriving by train and a short taxi ride from the train station. The Taxi only accepted cash which I did not have. I expected the driver would receive payment by credit card. So, my first encounter with the receptionist was to charge the fare to our room and provide currency for the driver. The receptionist telephoned the manager whom did not accept this arrangement. However, Antonio the receptionist went above and beyond in service by giving me 5 euros for tip and fair of his own money. I was so impressed by the gesture of this staff but not the management. I repaid Antonio with in minutes of finding an ATM machine and gave him double the amount he lended me. Another impressionable staff was Nelson whom treated us with exquisite service at the bar and at dinner. He deserved and received a direct tip that he wouldn’t have received if given through management. Management might want to take note of these performers as quality staff that reflects on the hotel service in a positive way. For breakfast the staff was indifferent and unenthusiastic. The higher end rooms here are large enough with sparse decor and furniture. The floor is exposed grey concrete with no rug or tile coverings. It looks like it is still unfinished construction when contrasted with the pleasant marble bathroom walls. Good environment control with proper AC, fan, heat function. Bright room with large windows and window coverings that has an option for blocking the strong sun. The facility has both inside and outside small pools with recliners. The restaurant and bar is suitable for wine, cocktails, and reasonably valued food options. The location is walking distance to main tourist attractions in this small town.

The good... an interesting building and a credible but expensive dinner... Divinuis. Now the bad. At check-in I am told that the only openings for breakfast are at 9:30 AM and 10 AM. Breakfast begins at 7:30 AM. Reception tells me they sent information on reserving breakfast with the "confirmation letter". However, I used Booking.com... better rate... and they never sent anything. After making me quite upset with no resolution I go to my room.... an expensive suite. . They then call and tell me "management" approved my having breakfast at 7:30 AM. Fast forward to breakfast... no one is checking what times are reserved and after an initial rush... by 8:15 AM... the restaurant is close to empty. The property has made me unhappy for no reason. The room. Adequate but... the Nespresso machine has a sign... two capsule per day are complimentary but after that 2 Euros per capsule. Are they kidding... at a rate of 340 Euros per night. Also, no kettle, no coffee cups... just espresso cups... no milk... powdered or wet. Nothing else... no even a piece of fruit... an amenity that high end properties usually provide. Dinner. Despite having an email confirmation. They do not have a reservation. No problem. I am seated. Breakfast. Less than average. A "hot" buffet with your standard lukewarm offerings. No cooked-to-order menu. No juices on the buffet. I am not offered juice but when requested orange juice is provided. Selection of fruits, meats, and cheeses, breads, pastries... average... not five star. Not recommended.

Delightful stay in a beautiful setting

The hotel is located in the old city center next to a 2000 year old Roman temple. The former convent is abeautiful building that has been converted into a very nice hotel. The rooms are quite small but certainly comfortable - ours had a beautiful view. The long corridors and open spaces make for a very interesting hotel. The entrance is grand with extremely gracious staff who are quite friendly and helpful. The swimming pool in the center is large, chilly with surrounding deck chairs - great for a leisurely afternoon. We ate dinner in the hotel. The chef served as our waiter as well and did a remarkable job serving us a leisurely dinner, commenting on the food - which was excellent. Breakfast (included in the rate) was excellent with a variety of pastries, cheeses and other savory items- not to be missed With the hotel's central location it was very easy to explore the old town. I would highly recommend this hotel.

Rated this a 5 because the whole experience at this hotel was wonderful. They have underground parking. The counter agents are really friendly and helpful. The rooms are minimalist, nice and clean and nicely decorated. There is a safe in the room. No real closet. But there.is a desk, lots of plugs and for those of you travelling from Canada. They have a universal plug in the bathroom which is convenient. The TV is small but who needs a tv when travelling. It is so close to everything. Shower pressure was awesome. Really great vibe here. Really enjoyed it.

Vitoria Stone Hotel

The Vitoria Stone Hotel**** is at 200 meters from the wall that enclosures the historic center of Evora, about 12 minutes' walk from the famous Giraldo Square. Vitoria Stone Hotel goes far beyond a name, it is a perfect symbiosis between a design and traditional ambience, living up to the region where it is placed. This concept was born from an immense passion for the genuine Alentejo. We are rooted in the traditional, without leaving sophistication aside. Our goal is to amaze with a bold architecture, with the presence of rustic elements, imposing stones, along with pieces of delicate and sophisticated design. The stone is present throughout the unit and the entire hotel will be a tribute to important places in this unique region. We want to make our guests feel at home and live the Alentejo just as it is.

Style, sophistication, and comfort!

The hotel is sophisticated, stylish, and practical. We loved it! The staff are extremely warm, welcoming, and helpful. Whilst the rooms are not large, they are well appointed and designed to maximize the space without feeling cramped. Super clean. The location is excellent, just a 10-15 minute walk to the center of the old city. The parking was easy, though I don’t know if it could become a challenge when the hotel is full. The breakfast was great with a large selection of hot and cold options. We would absolutely stay here if we visit Evora again!

Disillusionment with M’Ar de Ar Aqueduto stay.

Presently with a tour group that just arrived today and this is one hotel we were disappointed to find ourselves staying at. Requested another room with outdoor seating but they were booked up. Most rooms have only French balconies and a few ground floor ones have patios. Really sad to find the pool area so blah. Undersized pool. Small hot tub. Pigeons all over the place swimming and drinking in the pool! No colourful plants or flowers to cheer the place up. Deck furniture is plain white plastic. No one taking care of the area or guests. No open bar or snack area for guests to enjoy. It looks like something out of the 60’s! Depressing. Bedrooms are fine except for the open clear wall between tub and bedroom. Thank goodness it had a pull down screen. Seems ti be no real life in this hotel. Couldn’t find the bar or restaurant yet. Silent as a tomb is this place. If we could leave we would but we are tied to our tour group here for one more day. We have stayed in a lot of hotels in our travels but never found one so disappointing I wanted to cry. Bleh…..

Why isn't this a five star property?

Reviewed By JimFinPortland

On a recent trip to Portugal and Spain's Extramadura region, we decided to spend a couple of nights in Evora. So we ended up in Evora (not intentionally) on Friday and Saturday night. I hadn't even considered this property but of my top two hotel choices, one was sold out and the other was outrageously expensive on the weekend. I don't know if it was an average weekend in April. There was some sort of two week long musical event but the main stage in the main square didn't have very many people even at 10pm on Saturday night. So I booked the Vila Gale based on it's class (four star), overall rating, and to a lesser extent, location. We've never stayed in a Vila Gale property but they all look pretty nice. It turned out to be an excellent choice that exceeded my expectations. The hotel was sold out on Saturday night so to have an excellent experience during a full hotel was clearly nice. I always ask for a quiet room (top floor away from elevator) and they met my wishes. This is a large hotel with rooms primarily in two wings on both sides of the lobby area and outdoor pool. (Note: 1 indoor and 2 outdoor pools.) Our stay was excellent. Large room. Quiet. Comfortable. Good breakfast. The A/C was working in April (which was not the case for some of my other hotels). I could probably find something that wasn't perfect but I just be nit-picking. There were lots of amenities that we didn't use (pools, spa, etc.) but clearly many of the guests were certainly using. This is more of a resort property than just a hotel. Many of the guests looked like they were just couples or families who came for the weekend and probably didn't even spend much time outside the hotel. I've never seen the official criteria for classifying hotels in Portugal but I can't picture why this isn't a five star property. Probably the only thing I can mention that might be a little less perfect is that it isn't in much of a neighborhood. It's outside the city walls across the street from a gas/petrol station. However, it's only a 10 minute walk to the main plaza on a cute street. It's also across the street from the bus station (which we used when we left town). It's not particularly convenient to the train station, but we used the line 24 bus which runs a couple of blocks from the train station to the other side of the roundabout from the hotel. The hotel doesn't appear to have much parking which seemed quite odd to me though many guests quite obviously drove to the property. I would definitely stay here again.

Could be great but staff poor and not enough of them - just DISAPPOINTING

Reviewed By Mike E

First the positives... great location, very relaxed and quiet, ample car parking. Unfortunately, what should have been a great stay was made extremely underwhelming given really poor customer service and in some cases no customer service. Seems like the hotel was being operated by a handful of people; at least two of these seemingly trainees with no experience. In fairness, these guys tried, but it appears that they have had little or no training - an issue more with the hotel management than the staff themselves. On trying to find someone to order lunch and drinks at 2.30pm on a Saturday, we were eventually told by the receptionist that nothing would be available until 'Dinner' time. When we tried to book dinner for the second night of our stay we were informed that they had no availability - strange that no-one told us they had limited availability when we checked in the day before. Then we had a call to our in room phone at around 4,30pm asking us if we wanted our room cleaning as we had placed the do not disturb sign on the door. Which bit of 'do not disturb' do these guys not understand? Another negative for a hotel which as 32 rooms- they only have approx 18 sun loungers available by the pool - most people ended up sat on the grass. Feedback during our stay was met with...OK we will try and train our staff better....
