Herdade do Sobroso Wine & Country House

Located in the Vidigueira municipality, in Alentejo, and only 9 km away from the Alqueva dam, this charming country house is equipped with air-conditioned rooms with cable television. The salt water outdoor swimming pool ending in a waterfall offers a panoramic view of the vineyards and of the Serra do Mendro. With a rustic and yet refined and slightly exotic decoration, the rooms at the Herdade do Sobroso Country House also include mini-bar, a desk and a private bathroom. So that guests can discover the natural beauty of the Alentejo region, the front desk, which is open 24 hours, can organise wine tours, initiations to wine tastings, visitations to our cellar, photographic safaris with the possibility of watching deers, boars, mouflons and several birds, hot air balloon rides, as well as boat rides in the Alqueva dam with the possibility of water skiing. It is also possible to explore the surrounding areas thanks to our bicycle rental service. And there are many other activities available. Guests may join the hunting club to hunt partridges, hares, deers, mouflons and boars in the Herdade do Sobroso’s 1600 hectares of land. The restaurant serves traditional and tasty lunches and dinners. Some of our suggestions are roasted boar with green asparagus “migas” (a bread based traditional dish), Portuguese black pig with clams, wild duck rice in the oven with traditional Portuguese sausages, mouflon stew, dogfish soup with a poached egg or octupus rice with coriander. Don’t forget to taste our orange pie, the “toucinho do céu” (egg yolk and sugar tartlet), the “sericaia” (an egg, sugar and milk dessert) and many other traditional sweets.Guests may buy wines, olive oil, rosemary honey and jams in the Herdade do Sobroso’s cellar. The hotel has its own free car park. Beja’s Airfield is 31,3 km away from the Herdade do Sobroso Country House.

Great family resort hotel in rural setting

Reviewed By DominicDeBurca

If you want to get away from it all and relax and detox from the pressures of modern day life then you could do worse than get in your car and drive to this resort property as its out in the boondocks a bit in central Portugal and a bit too far to justify taxi transfers from the nearest town.

We had the most amazing stay here! We spent 3 nights and it just wasn't long enough. The area is absolutely stunning as it's surrounded by nature and beaches that are really close by. Sofia was such a wonderful host and catered to our every need, cooking us delicious meals each evening. She showed us to secret beaches in the area and provided us with surfing lessons which such good fun! We had such a lovely relaxing holiday and we will definitely be staying here again.

Charming place (in the middle of nowhere)

Reviewed By Tom D

Very charming B&B in a nice setting. Clean and comfortable rooms, with the design nicely referring to the origins of the building as a wine warehouse. Little privacy in the bathrooms though, and a pity you can't sit outside to enjoy the beautiful green surroundings. Mr Passos is a very kind and multilingual host, and his breakfast is delicious.

Very good accommodation near Golega, superb breakfast.

Reviewed By Michael S

We stayed one night in one of the appartments in the large old Quinta/estate/farm about 2 kilometers outside Golega. Our appartment was very spacious and very comfortable. The breakfast spread the following morning was really excellent-do not miss! Lots of home made jams, breads, orange cake, cereals, nuts, juices, fruit, coffee etc etc. The owner was very friendly and welcoming as was the manager Isabel, who is also a Fado singer! There is a swimming pool which would be very good for families later in the year, and lots of cattle, horses, dogs and cats. We are only very reluctantly giving it 4 stars instead of five for two reasons (i) the WiFi is not great due to the very thick ancient walls (ii) if you are on foot as we were the property is a two km walk into town, and the first bit of the walk is on a relatively busy road with not much of a footpath. Other than that this place is really excellent and is a great option in Golega.

However made extremely welcome by Carlos the owner and immediately offered a well deserved drink of local wine which was also excellent. Absolutely perfect setting and charming hosts, nothing was too much trouble for them. Room was spotless and very comfortable. Swimming pool crystal clear and very welcoming. Breakfast was a joy.
