Great Location, Basic Room, Welcoming

We wanted a real hotel, but a good value, in Ericeira, and this was a good choice. The room was basic and the hard wood floor was not perfectly clean (maybe because the windows were open to cool it off) but we were quite happy with our choice. The woman in reception was friendly and helpful. There is no elevator, so we had to take out little suitcases up the narrow stairs ourselves. There is no air-conditioning, which you usually don't need, but it was too loud and way too bright to keep the windows open. They had dark curtains, but the way they were hung allowed a lot of light in over the top of them and the street lights are quite bright.

Amazing! We want to come back ASAP!

I cannot fault the Quinta dos Machados at all. We had the most incredible stay and it exceeded our expectations. The food in the restaurant was incredible, we were B&B but paid for multiple lunches and dinners throughout our stay and all were incredible and very reasonably priced we were very surprised. The chef was amazing! We attended for a family wedding at a local villa BUT we had a large family party at the Machados and the food was incredible both for a huge group (over 40) and when dining as a small group (2-5). Anna & Marcus in the restaurant are an absolute credit to the Machados and were the most helpful, kind and professional team members. Always engaging with us and the kids and we’re helpful with choosing things on the menu and translating where requires. I also used the spa facilities and cannot recommend Eduarda the masseuse enough! She was incredible - one of the best massages I have had. She was very kind and just had a beautiful energy about her. All in all, you can tell we really enjoyed it and had a great stay. If I really had to pick at anything, the pool was freezing but that’s no one’s fault and very much time of year we went so that’s fine and we still went in for swimming regardless as the pool was lovely (just cold) and I would love to see more choice of eggs for breakfast. They offered scrambled eggs which were always cooked well but maybe also having hard boiled or fried eggs as options too would be great - but the breakfast spread as a whole was fab! Everywhere is constantly cleaned and all the staff were friendly and kind. I also found it very accessible as I had a stroller and was able to access everywhere with no trouble and they had a lift which was surprising for a small hotel that hasn’t actually got many floors (just 2 - ground and first) We loved it so much we are considering an exclusive hire for a large family event next year. Cannot wait to be back! Thank you having us Jess, Isabella & baby Theo x

Bad experience

Reviewed By ankehM6962CI

We found our stay at Amar really disappointing, and would not recommend it. - Our biggest frustration was how they handled the surfing lessons. We had pre-booked two lessons with our stay of three nights. When we arrived we were told to come back later that afternoon for check-in and they kept us waiting when we returned at the agreed time. By the time they had checked us in, it was too late to join a surfing lesson that day. The next day the waves were too big for an intermediate class, so they cancelled the class. We were told to take the classes the next two days. We notified them that on our check-out day, we had to leave early in the morning for our journey back home so wouldn't be able to go surfing. Their response was that it was our own decision to not take the class and that they couldn't give us an alternative. We had no choice: we couldn't stay because had to return home to the Netherlands. We first talked to them to find a solution: a different class or maybe a refund. We asked for a refund since they couldn't provide the service they promised. They responded rudely that this was not possible simply 'because we had already paid'. We have tried to talk to two members of the staff about this issue, but they both were very unfriendly and impolite. Their handling of the situation and how they treated us, was very unprofessional. - The one class that we did take, was lousy. Getting to the beach took ages. The beach was a bod choice for the type of swell coming in that day, making the waves impossible to surf. The tide came up during the session, making the white water in front unsurfable pretty quick. Moreover, we booked an intermediate lesson, as they claim to provide on their website. However, this was not the case. We had to join a beginners class and the teacher simply let the intermediate people surf on their own, not once checking on them nor giving them advice. - Later that day we asked if we could rent a surfboard, we thought it could compensate a bit for the 80 euro's we paid for the surf lesson we wouldn't be able to take nor get refunded. This was also not possible - again rudely communicated to us. - Moreover, the room looked less nice than the pictures suggest. We booked a private suite with a private bathroom. The bathroom was old, looked dirty, and smelled bad. The rest of the room was bare but the bed slept fine. - Breakfast was not served at the hotel, but at a bakery in town. It consisted of coffee, orange juice and either a croissant or a bun with cheese and ham. This was very little and not enough for adults. Moreover, the croissants were tasteless and dry. Overall: highly disappointed by our stay and the communication of the staff.

A great spot to stay in Ericeira

Reviewed By jck1963Regina

Paulo was a friendly and engaging host. The room was clean and tidy, the shared bathroom (shared with one other) was immaculate; the apartment was a short walk to the beach for surfing, or the old downtown for meals, bars and shopping. Breakfast was fresh daily and more than adequate. The view...was more than worth the price of admission.

Awful. Don't stay here.

The accommodation was not at all as described. We booked three individual studios for three families, each with private facilities. We got one apartment with shared facilities (between 10 people). It was damp and smelled of it and the floors were dirty. It wasn't even where it was supposed to be (overlooking the town square), but a drive away from where you check in at reception! There weren't enough beds in one of the rooms booked. It was supposed to have a double and 2 singles, plus an additional cot (to accommodate a family of five). In fact, there was one double and one single. We were then offered a dirty, mouldy, fold-up foam mattress and advised this was for the baby to sleep on. You wouldn't have let a dog sleep on it, let alone a baby. The bathroom had a wet and dirty bathmat not changed for our arrival. The sink and shower leaked and there was half a toilet roll for 10 people! In the kitchenette, if you cooked using the hob, the power tripped out, and all the crockery, cutlery etc., had to be washed before you could use it. The accommodation wasn't ready for check-in at the stated time and as for the advertised free Wi-Fi, well, there wasn't any Wi-Fi, free or otherwise. Basic accommodation is absolutely fine, but it has to be clean, fit for purpose and priced accordingly. The Hospedaria Bernardo fails on all counts.
