Tremendously high temperatures make it desirable, whenever a railway stopover keeps you close to the station, to find some shady oasis, some welcoming, comforting place : not so unlikely to reach, should you know exactly where to go - or follow your instinct. In Lausanne, try the Café du Simplon, just down the North escalator. In Geneva, "Nomades" in the Grottes area (restored, friendly, surprising) will bless you with mezzés, Mediterranean (and moderately priced) delicacies, and space (outdoor as well as indoor).

Basic tending to rough-and-ready, but the kebab was nice and extra harissa was offered without being asked for. It is a reasonable distance to walk from the Airport Holiday Inn Express when you need food rather than fine dining, and by Swiss standards is good value for money. Just across the Ferney border from Geneva is a decrepit building housing Goodtaste. Don't be fooled. They stock a range of locally made and imported goodies. Have a meal or takeaway or even frozen foods. Amazing
