I booked this restaurant having tried a number of other Michelin level or recommended restaurants in Helsinki. I had high hopes after very good experience in similar restaurants. Unfortunately, this restaurant was a disappointment at best. This restaurant serves approximately 20 courses some of which were outside the list or part of an older menu. My disappointment started when I realized that most of the courses were very simple vegetarian courses. So simple that it reminded me of a very poor restaurant which takes out part of the dish for a person who does not want that part specifically instead of replacing it with something else. From my point of view, a bad fine dining experience is one where you feel that the number of courses is increased by the fact that an otherwise good dish is divided into four courses. One of the courses was a potato. Yes, a boiled potato... To their defense, this potato was served with a little spoonful of fish roe but both the roe and the potato were masked behind the overwhelming saltiness of fish sauce. And those were the three ingredients used in that specific dish. No garnishes or contrast. It was mainly just a potato. There was some good to it, I must admit. Their sea-buckthorn dessert was my favorite and well above the level I was served this evening. Their champagne was also good but came with a whopping price tag of 23 euros per glass. Nonetheless, one of the better champagnes I have tasted.I would recommend the very good Grön for green eating and the excellent Olo for a balanced experience instead of Ask.tldr: Went to a fine dining restaurant and felt that I was served three dishes of underwhelming tastes divided into about 20 plates and a potato.

The wine selection should indicate the vintage year. We chose a Barbaresco Serraboella 2015 - at 95 euros - a very well rated wine. Waiter did not open bottle in front of us and served directly, without offering to taste. The wine was a terrible “piquette” which did not match the bottle label, we think the bottle was counterfeit or something else happened. For same price chose champagne at 99 euros and listen to the “pop” opening as a guarantee of authenticity...We paid 251 Euros for two 5 course meals and wine. Food started well and ended with mediocre filet served with inevitable red berry sauce and finale with a strange ice cream with salted potato chips and thyme on a bed of over sweet chocolate sauce and crunchy stuff. Rosemary would have saved the pairing with chocolate but thyme killed it.Polite Japanese seated around, probably attracted by bold guidebooks.I´m the restaurateur and the importer of the wines in our restaurant. I know all the producers and their wines personally - they are small quality producers whose wines are imported straight to us with no one operating in between. The vintages on the wine list change often according to the availability from the producer and therefore we tell the vintage when asked and don´t write it on the wine list. As You most certainly know, the wines are expensive in Northern countries and this doesn´t depend on the vintage.I always open the valuable wines myself and taste that the bottle is good and the wine uniform to the producer and the vintage - as I did before I served the wine to Your table yesterday. This doesn´t mean, that the customer shouldn´t comment and return the wine, if he thinks there is something wrong with the bottle. One should be very careful, if bringing up the discussion of wine forgery in social media.Best regards, Jussi Hukkanen

We had a fabulous dinner during our 2 night visit to Helsinki on a Thursday evening early September. Restaurant was full. Service was excellent, friendly and responsive. We had a delicious 4 course dinner beautifully presented and wonderfully tasty. One of us had the wine parings which complemented the dinner. For Helsinki, I thought the pricing was fair. All in all a memorable dining experience. Recommended!

Loved the whole evening. Food, wine and service were all of the highest quality. We were especially impressed with the serving staff who managed to strike the perfect balance of expertise and warmth. I was slightly embarrassed to be wearing jeans - Finnair managed to loose all our luggage - yet the whole place is so welcoming that I felt at ease immediately. Recommended in the strongest possible terms and my advice would be to book early in the evening to really take your time enjoy the ten courses and matching wines.

This tiny restaurant (18 covers) punches well above its weight and is certainly putting out Michelin quality food from its small kitchen. We both went for the surprise 6 course menu with wines (go on ... treat yourself!). Memorable courses included an unbelievably creamy pumpkin soup, a carrot bursting with flavour (yes, really!) and a succulent veal main washed down with a full bodied Rhône wine. Other wines were a great combination of lesser known ones and some great classics. The attention to detail and care is obvious, and hearing about the food straight from the chefs is really nice.Book ahead and get yourself down here if you possibly can!

I reserved in advance...essential but it is a small and cozy restaurant. The whole evening didn’t disappoint. I opted for the 5 course menu with matching wines. Food was superb (mushroom dish was amazing) whilst the Italian wines were all spot on. As a solo diner I was never made to feel ‘left out’...which can sometimes happen. The service was unbeatable. Elina’s attention and knowledge of dishes/wines was first class. She was a joy to speak to. Toca has a relaxing and welcoming ambience...a lesson to any restaurant. Helsinki’s best restaurant? It is for me!Thank you Andy, it was my plesure to talk with you and I warmly wellcome you to come back next time you are in Helsinki!- Elina

Bas-Bas is situated in an old industry local so the atmosphere is very informal. BUT the food is there everything. I was there as an invited quest for 70 people and they succeeded in serving fresh pasta to everybody, that tasted heavenly. And the main course, the grilled lamb was just perfect. Cannot understand how they did it, although you see what happens in the kitchen.

This was our first meal in Helsinki and was at a restaurant not far from our hotel (you could see the restaurant from our balcony). As well as good food the restaurant also has wonderful 1950’s styling. The service was efficient, good and very friendly and the food was very enjoyable. When we left our bill was just over € 100 for two courses and 50 cl of beer for two. By international standards I feel this is expensive although not by Finnish.I did feel that the menu was slightly limited and that I’ve already had my first choice however, if I’m back in Helsinki again, I’d be quite happy to return.
