Reviews on Indian food in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Sometimes referred to as the capital of Africa, Addis Ababa is a buzzing hub of economic, social and political activity and home to such notable offices as the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. The diversity of its people is reflected in the many churches, mosques and museums, including the Ethiopian National Museum which houses the fossilized skeleton of Dinkinesh, or Lucy, the Australopithecine discovered in the area in the 1970s.

Unlike Nairobi or Dar es Salaam, Addis does not boast of a huge South Asian/Indian presence. However, there are a few Indian resturants much to the delight of Indian travellers. However, it seems that they are basically non vegetarian restaurants offering vegetarian fare too. This particular place has nothing fanciful from outside or the presentation inside. However, the food served is authentic Indian and more spicy than you would expect in this continent. Good option in Addis.

I'm a vegetarian and tasted a few items in Sangam Restaurant during my one week stay at Addis Ababa. Taste of food is awesome when compared to few others nearby. Their Garlic Naan is soft, excellent and they also serve tasty Curd Rice. I requested Rasam & Sambar on two different days served only "On demand" with Rice and Chef did a great job of providing those. Ambience is good and plus point is parking in the centre of Bole Road. Indian Masala Papad and Samosas are great pick for Snax lovers. They also serve Indian Hot Masala Chai.

A friend took us to Zaika the other night - FABULOUS food! We arrived shortly after 6 and by 7:15 every table was full. Our group of 3 ordered 3 different foods - all were excellent! Chicken tikka (a generous portion), lamb korma (incredibly soft lamb and very flavorful sauce), mixed vegetables (I ordered mild but it still had a nice little kick to it), steamed rice, butter-garlic naan. And, a lassy (regular) for desert. It was all excellent and I'm eager to go back and try other dishes. It's not a cheap place, but the food was really great, and our server was attentive - even though he was swamped.

The staff is excellent, ambiance is beautiful. I especially enjoyed the heavy goblets to drink water. I had a very simple meal and although tasty, I thought the price was exorbitant. I would return if the prices were cut, honestly, in half. Otherwise, unfortunately will not be returning.

Five of us went to Sangam for a lunch recently. I like Sangam because the tables are not crowded together, it's not noisy, and you can actually have a conversation without competing with the sound system, or being concerned about others eaves dropping on your conversation. The food is consistently good. Nothing too unusual, but it's reliable and tasty. The service is also good - the waiter that has been there forever (35+ years!) is a master at up-selling, but if you pay attention you'll only end up with what you actually want. Prices are fair and a good value.

The place does not meet expectations, especially if you have visited their website. The food is good, though. I guess if the owners invested in the facilities, incl. the washrooms, it would rank among the top indian restaurants in Addis. Until then, no repeat from me.

I was excited to order from this restaurant because it is fully vegetarian. However, the biryani was pretty tasteless, the only flavour sensation being an overpowering heat. Disappointing.
