Santa Ramen

It seems like there is a new Ramen place opening up every week somewhere in the Bay area. I ordered the basic ramen and it had several different ingredients added to it to provide different layers of flavor. It tasted quite good. Service was good, the restaurant was large with good seating and parking was decent inside a small shopping center. But at the end of the day, it is still ramen so I find it challenging to pay so over $15 for a bowl of ramen when I can get really good noodle soups elsewhere for 1/2 the cost. I will not be visiting a ramen restaurant anytime in the near future. It is just too expensive for what you get.

Ramen Dojo

Reviewed By ryantB5527WL

We went around prime time, 7 PM on a Saturday. The wait was around 45 minutes for a group of 5 but the wait was well worth it. I ordered the popular garlic ramen, which with some extra add-ons comes to around 15$. I'd give this place 5 stars but minus one because they rush you to finish and pay the check. Ramen Dojo is pretty tiny and could expand to a larger establishment so there wouldn't be a long line. We waited 45 minutes to eat for 30.I wouldn't come here if you're looking to eat and chat for over an hour. Otherwise, delicious!

Great beverages and tapas-type Japanese food. There's a diverse selections of Japanese sake and beer. You may select grilled entrees, sashimi or sushi rolls. All our recommended selections were very good. We were not disappointed. The servers were very helpful with their recommendations.

Hot Wok Bistro

I have been eating lunch at Hot Wok Bistro for over 10 years. Their sister restaurant, Hot Wok Bistro Too in San Carlos is also excellent. The family that owns these restaurants is extremely friendly and service oriented, but most importantly, their food is delicious, healthy, and inexpensive! Lunch specials come with delicious hot and sour soup and steamed or fried rice. I usually get black bean shrimp or fish, vegetable stir-fry, or kung pao chicken. Highly recommended!

Charm Thai Eatery

Charm Thai is a hidden gem in San Mateo! Great service, awesome food at reasonable prices. Parking can be tough though. We had to park a block away in a 2 hour zone in a residential area. It’s a small place with maybe a dozen tables. Good selection and variety. House chef specials were $14 while regular dishes were $10. Food was served hot and fresh. The servers came around frequently to solicit feedback and if all was good. I found this a rarity in a place which was packed around 7.30 pm on a FridayI would highly recommend this restaurant and will visit again.

Ramen Parlor

Reviewed By aurorar685

After experiencing perhaps the best tonkotsu ramen at Ramen Dojo, I dropped into Ramen Parlor a block over. Both Dojo and Parlor are under the same ownership, but they have a slightly different menu, with the later offering crab and lobster flavoured soups. I first ordered the spicy crab miso ramen. Again, an incredibly flavoured, well balanced soup, served at the perfect temperature. The noodles were slightly soft for my liking, but that’s just me. They do have free, on site parking, but given its popularity, you may need to find street parking. Expect to queue at peak times.

Some individual dishes are excellent, but they are very heavy and there is redundancy on the menu, with one appetizer showing up again as a side to the main dish. Service stunningly just okay. Not welcoming, timing off with multiple appetizers brought at once rather than paced, empty dishes lingering on the table, water glasses repeatedly not refilled. We were in no hurry at all and ordered in two parts, but the meal lasted an hour, and we thought well that was quick!. The timing was like in a neighborhood Chinese restaurant, not what you expect from a 1-Star restaurant. This is not a full evening out. Also, ambience completely unexciting. If you are plowing through the list of Michelin 1-stars in the Bay Area you will come to a jolt when you get to this one. I am not a harsh critic but these was really just not okay. Move to the next in your list.

Been here few times, but haven’t been back for a long time. Their menu is quite extensive, but if you read properly, a lot of their main dishes are the same with just a replacement for different meat/fish. For instance, Rangoon beef can also be ordered with Rangoon fish, lamb or chicken so don’t make a mistake by ordering Rangoon fish and Rangoon lamb together. Both are good but same taste except one is fish instead of meat. Overall it’s not bad, nothing special. One particular dish that is worth ordering is their fresh tempura roll which is pricey but good to try. Another dish is their pumpkin squash curry with chicken. The curry sauce with caffir leaves is delicious, but it comes with huge chunks of chicken with no taste. It’s like eating boiled chicken, thanks to the curry sauce, you can push the chicken aside and simply enjoy the sauce with its veggies. You can thank the caffir leaves for that!

Sushi Sam's Edomata

Have been here several times over the years and they have been consistently consistent with their style and what they do. It may not be conventional but it is effectively good. Food - 4If you are looking for a traditional sushi joint, this is not a your place. If you want a nice twist that is not over the top, you would enjoy Sushi Sam! Just sit at the bar and go for the omakase. Start with 8 pieces first and add 2 pieces at a time on until you’re full. It’s a fun adventure that you can control. Service - 4This place is not but it has a small hole in a wall feel. Service is not professional but efficient. You may feel a little rushed because of how busy they are they want turns. Atmosphere - 3As mentioned, not but has a small hole in the wall place. It’s not elegant nor romantic but more of a local joint. Most definitely will return if I am in town. Good food, easy and reasonable. Give this place a try
