The Fish Market - San Mateo

Nestled alongside a quiet lagoon, our fourth restaurant, and the first to feature the upstairs, upscale Top of the Market, has been a dining destination for bay area residents since 1982. This beautiful restaurant also features a full-service cocktail bar

Both waiters and the kitchen were overwhelmed by the packed restaurant. This was Sunday of Labor Day weekend. But most annoying was that they took a reservation for 6 with a request for deck seating. After being strung along, we finally went outside to look and discovered that there are no tables for 6 on the deck—only for 2 or 4. Many of these can’t be put together without blocking the walkway. Yet, they strung us along until it became obvious that there was NEVER going to be a time on a busy night where two of the relevant adjoining tables would be available. Why not just say so when 1) Taking the reservation; or 2) Upon arrival? When we were finally seated indoors in an undesirable location (because we waited for the phantom table outside), food was cold, overcooked and a drink was forgotten. They gave us a couple of appetizers and a beer because of the messed up food, but the overwhelming experience was very poor.TravelRab - Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your dining experience. The general manager of the San Mateo Restaurant, Simon, would appreciate the opportunity to discuss it with you. Please email me a way to contact you at [email protected] I hope to hear from you soon. Kirk B

This is a small, simply furnished restaurant. Don't let the basic appearance fool you. Maybe this is how they keep the prices so low. Go for an adventure in tasting the best Vietnamese food around. If you don't mind fried food order the fabulous Saigon Style Pot Stickers! Order comes with four, one per person is the right amount. Rice plate servings are large, two plates could serve three. But order three anyway, you'll be so happy to bring home the leftovers.Best time to go: weekend 2-4pm. No crowd, quick service. Lunch and dinner time are packed, waiting out the door.My favorites: #49 Stir fried Eggplant with Chicken and Curry Chicken (#55)This is casual dining, maybe not the place for a first-date.Enjoy!

Spent 2 nights in San Fran and visited here on both nights, we loved the lobster chowder and sampler platter. We tried the lobster tacos but felt the portion was small . It can be difficult to find it is about 10 min walk from the Aloft hotel. if you are not familiar with the area I would suggest getting an uber, we visited later at night and it wasn't as busy as lunch time. Staff are friendly and prices are reasonable definately give it a try if you are staying at the airport .The lobster chowder is always a great choice, Teresa, and we're delighted to see that you loved it! Thank you for your kind words, and we hope to see you back for more again soon. Have a great day,Danny Rosa, Manager
