Where to eat Scandinavian food in Stavanger: The Best Restaurants and Bars

October 29, 2019 Frederic Celentano

Reviews on Scandinavian food in Stavanger, Western Norway, Norway. With about 120,000 people, Stavanger is Norway’s fourth-largest city and a fascinating mix of old and new. Its history stretches back deep into the Middle Ages. Stavanger was once a tranquil coastal market town and then later an important fishing port. But it was the 1969 discovery of oil offshore that forever changed the now bustling city’s fortunes and landscape. Don’t miss the well-preserved old town (Gamle Stavanger), the unique Canning Museum or the 12th-century Stavanger Cathedral.

We had dinner at the restaurant, and the starter was very small and “simple”, smoked salmon. The main dish was a buffet with traditional Norwegian Xmas food. It was very rich in fat, not great I would say. I have been in better places in Stavanger...

Very good atmosphere at this restaurant - nice decor in the covered courtyard area. Attentive and professional service - the waiter offered a good additional description of the food and the daily specials. We chose the fish and shellfish soup and the fish of the day (a type of pan fried cod). The fish of the day dish was excellent ! A good size, perfectly cooked and excellent sauce and slightly crunchy asparagus - nothing to fault about this dish at all. The reason for my Very Good rating instead of Excellent was the soup was simply not hot enough. The flavor was excellent but it was just tepid not hot. Overall still strongly recommend this restaurant. The price is fair for Norway.

Fisketorget

We thought the Fisketorget restaurant might be a tourist trap, because it is located so close to where cruise ships dock. But, we were wrong. Granted it was crowded, even at lunch. We were lucky to get a table, without a reservation, at 1:00 pm. I ordered the mussels in curry, which were good. My husband, though, had the most outstanding fish soup he has ever had. It was full of chunks of fish in a brothy, creamy base. The herbs and seasoning were divine. When we asked the waitress what it contained, she declined to tell us because it was a secret recipe. All I can say is that if you are ever in Stavenger, be sure to stop at Fisketorget for an unforgettable soup.

Restaurant SOL

On a whim, and without booking a table, we chanced upon Sol. What good fortune! The establishment is small, and understated (in a good way). The welcome was the opposite. A table for two, our enthusiastic host took us through the menu, and we opted for the five course set. Fresh bread and sublime butter, a grilled zucchini soup, lightly poached monkfish with asparagus and sugar-snap peas, a smokey celeriac “steak” and finally a toast flavoured ice cream dessert. Each dish is lovingly prepared, using the freshest local produce, and cooked and combined to capture maxim flavour and textures. Presentation, with great care, further enhanced our senses. We tried two organic wines, a South African chenin-blanc, and a red from the Anjou region. Both quite different, and each complimented the food perfectly. The wine and drinks list is ambitious, and we did have a chuckle at some of the offerings - search out each page and you will be rewarded! The service was impeccable, the team proud to serve their best food, and unusual combinations, in a warm and welcoming hug of Norwegian hospitality! Sol is a great shaft of sunlight that warmed us to our very core - a wonderful and completely unexpected delight.
