Location isn't everything and for the first time this trip we choose to eat inside as this cafe/ restaurant is right on a main road. The plus side of this was that we had air conditioning on a very warm night. The welcome from the staff was warm and assistance with the menu offered. We chose porco a alentejana (pork and clams), migas with spare ribs and bacalhau a bras. All were excellent but the pork was truly amazing. We had a bottle of local wine (great value at â¬7 a bottle) and desserts were selected from the chiller close to the bar - a cool and creamy rice pudding topped with cinnamon and a light and exceptionally tasty coffee mousse. The bill for 3 of us was a very reasonable â¬41.

There was quite an extensive menu but we're not too keen on traditional food. We opted for steak with mushrooms and scrambled eggs with asparagus plus chips! It was very tasty, the service good and a pleasant atmosphere although it was very busy.

Renovated in 2017, Café Guadina excels in quality and variety of food, personalized service and environment. Located in the heart of this beautiful Alentejo village, next to the entrance to the historical area.
This is right in the heart of Mértola, with a nice terrace to sit and watch the world go by. I would say that it is definitely a cafe more than a restaurant we had pizza here for lunch and they were very good, they serve also serve breakfast, cakes and other snacks. Good place to stop when you have climbed down from the castle and very child friendly.

We visited for dinner in the weekend and fortunately made a reservation as the restaurant quickly got very full. The waiter is very friendly and always cracking jokes, the food was great and service very efficient. The decoration is also lovely and the atmosphere light and pleasant.

Lokal am Ortseingang von Mertola
The restaurant is in a very clean section of Mertola. We ate outside and watched the street scene. We tried a dish of very small fish - I don't recall their name. It was time consuming to eat them with their very small but unedible bones. The food was just OK.

You can eat at some good restaurants in Mertola but there is only one with a stunning view on the stronghold and a great set of dishes. Because...wow, who said that rural Portugese cuisine is crude. We had a superb watermelon gazpacho, great lamb dishes and tastefull fish. Cultivating the less is more this is a place we came back for the second evening we were in Mertola.

We stayed at Minas de São Domingos and chose this restaurant to have dinner. It could not be any better: excellent food and the staff were irrepressible. Everything was just marvelous! We will certainly be back and with a big smile in our faces. Oh and the prices are a gem: 12⬠per person with coffee, starters and dessert. Thank you!
