As of the 2010 United States Census, the city's population was 5,146, reflecting a decrease of 711 (−12.1%) from the 5,857 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 1,026 (−14.9%) from the 6,883 counted in the 1990 Census, an overall drop of more than 25% over the two decades. It is the county seat of Salem County, the state's most rural county. The name "Salem", in both the city and county, is derived from the Hebrew word shalom, meaning "peace".

My wife and I were in old town New Castle for the Victorian Xmas weekend and the few restaurants in the center of town were all full during the Saturday events. Therefore, we walked a few blocks to this location just outside of the old town area.We were glad we did. The service was good, the food was great and fairly priced and the booth that we sat in was comfortable and clean. A very nice local restaurant that we'll visit again. Plus, we could watch the Army - Navy football game on TV.

On a whim, I stopped in for lunch. I ordered a salmon topped salad- the "small" was certainly sufficient! Salmon was clearly frozen- but we ARE in NJ! I also got a Stromboli for later... The "Italian" was generously stuffed and yummy, spicy deliciousness! I would recommend!

Bring your appetite. Franco's displayed great service and very good food. Courses timed well, dinner enough for another meal to take home. My wife and I enjoyed the bruschetta and different chicken dishes. We had no room left for dessert, which I am sure was fine based on the reaction of the larger party in the room.

This is the best pizza In pennsville. People and pasta was the best but now we have Bravos. There is never an issue with our food, it's always good and they offer a rewards card for sandwiches and pizza;)

We had subs here recently. Small and large are the choices. We both ordered small and were shocked by how large "small" is in the deli. Neither of us could even eat most of half of what we ordered. Mine was cheese steak, hers was Italian meatball. More does not always mean better, and certainly not this time. Maybe the pizza is better here. We will never know.

If you have live in the area or were in town for an Island outage then you need to stop at Brad's. Brad's is great for brunch, lunch, dinner or even catering. Brad and his wife are the nicest people you will encounter out in the Hancock's Bridge area. Their food is great and they are reliable when it comes to catering. I suggest anyone in the area stop and order a bite to eat because you will not regret it.

We've ordered from Pat's Pizza a couple of times. I was visiting some friends & we couldn't decide on food so we went for pizza. Not much was open after 9 pm, but Pat's was open for delivery. We ordered wings, fries and a Stromboli. I only had 1 wing cause they were more than mild, other people ate them and loved them. Loved them as in that was all they wanted. We all devoured the Stromboli, it was big enough for three adults with some leftover for a lunch the next day. The best for me were the fries!! Waffle fries usually get soggy when they are delivered. Not these. They were firm, thick and so tasty. There is a little spice to them that makes them better than most. I liked them the best because they were still hot & firm. I could forgo the wings and have a small pice of the Stromboli to make room for the waffle fries. The next time we order from Pat's I'm just getting the fries. Yummy. Yummy.

Guarantee if you aren't looking for Mama Mia's that you have driven by it several times. The restaurant is tucked away in a shopping center with ever changing store fronts around it. The food is by far the best in Salem especially for a sit down dinner that is not a sub or sandwich. Although they have great sandwiches too! If you are at the Island for an outage I suggest you go to Mama Mia's.
