Porches Velho

Hidden away in the quaint Algarve village of Porches, Porches Velho is worth seeking out for high quality food and a secluded country setting looking out to the Monchique Mountains. Housed in a 210-year-old wine cellar, Porches Velho has retained original features in the open plan dining room, including the wooden beams criss-crossing the 5-metre-high ceiling and the latticed windows that fill the room with the beautiful sunlight of the Algarve. The Terrace is a splendid place to dine in the summer, whilst the wood fire in the hearth keeps the dining room warm in the winter. Surrounded by rustic farm tools and the huge aquarium of brightly coloured fish, you can enjoy a menu rich in Portuguese specialities, all prepared with quality produce and crafted by owner Sr. Candeias, who successfully fronted the renowned A Lanterna restaurant in Parchal for 25 years. Fresh, not farmed, the fish served at Porches Velho includes Smoked Swordfish. You can also try the popular Medallions of Black Pork with chestnuts and sweet potatoes, as well as Rabbit, Fish Cataplana and succulent steaks. There is a range of traditional desserts and all dishes can be complemented by a selection from the Portuguese wine list, offering something from all areas of the country. Friday night is Fado Night at Porches Velho and this is the most entertaining time to dine, with traditional, soulful Portuguese music playing whilst you enjoy your meal. Private and spacious with plenty of indoor and outdoor Seating, Porches Velho is an ideal venue for groups and celebrations and has hosted several successful wedding receptions.

Excellent service. Sunday roast special was impressive, and very good value at £16. Chicken, roast potatoes, lots of veggies and Yorkshire pudding too! The red cabbage was a nice extra. My friend found some space for a pudding and would recommend the treacle tart.
It’s not easy to park in Stow. We found a space on the road.

Went with partner and 2 grandchildren. Partner meat eater LOVED his black pork and potatoes, grandson did not like his overfussy tortilla, Only gluten free option was rissoto with loads of different kinds of mushrooms so was good if you loved them. Fig dessert was very different. Maybe because restaurant was not busy the staff fussed around us and made comment about my grandson not eating much of his which was uncomfortable. When I am spending so much money I do not expect to have this kind of attention. Is in interesting plastic tent like affair so quaint setting on main street.

Jota Lita Restaurant

Popped in to Jota Lita a few days ago and had a lovely meal but the wait for our food was unacceptable even by Portugese standards. We were the only people in the restaurant when we we arrived and we ordered a sirloin steak and chicken piri piri
We waited almost an hour for our meal even though other Portugese diners who arrived after us were served hot food before us. When our food did come we had to send my wife's steak back as it was not hot enough, really poor considering our wait which the waiter said was as a result of the time it takes to cook piri piri-- really! Such a shame as both the steak and piri piri were really good. The service from the waiting staff (not the chef) was really friendly and we had a good laugh.
The bill for our mains, a half bottle of red and 2 large bears came to €36 euros. The waiter also left a bottle of port and a bottle of strawberry cream requila on our table for us to taste at our leisure, a really nice touch. If it had not been for the wait for our food it would have been a really nice meal. I don't think we will return any time soon.

O Barradas

The cooking style of Restaurante "O Barradas" is based on original Portuguese cuisine and recipes adapted into a more contemporary defined taste. We only chose the best ingredients often found in the local region and serve daily fresh fish caught in Sagres and the tenderest meat from the North of Portugal (Mirandesa).

We visited this restaurant with friends some of which had eaten there before and four of us had not. The outside location was very special under the trees added to the atmosphere. The menu is excellent and fits everyone's dietary needs. I had the John Dory pan fried with garlic and capers. I have to say it was the best fish I had tasted in Portugal during my two week stay, and I had had fish at most of the evening meals. The shared starter was delicious and the restaurant had a good selection of wines. All six of us were completely happy with our meal choices. the dessert selection was very good and we managed to share the pancakes with cream cheese and lemon were amazing. The staff were very friendly and extremely efficient , not rushed and a very pleasant experience.

Chrissy's

Four of us, dined here last night having booked 2 days previously. It is recommended that you do book as this restaurant is very popular. We dined alfresco as the night was still unseasonably warm. The menu printed in 5 different languages is comprehensive indeed, self explanatory and accompanied by 3 or 4 specials on the notice board. We heard both Spanish and French clients last evening along with 3 or 4 tables of Brits. Chose 1 or 2 starters each, a main course and then add a dessert or not (the choice is yours). However many courses you do chose, will be accompanied by water and wine included in the price. An amuse bouche of a small prawn pancake on a mixed leaf bed and chilli jam, was brought to the table. Then to start with we chose 2 specials: crispy coated prawns with a garlic and lemon mayonnaise, Chicken livers and Carpaccio of beef. All were delicious. Main courses of: Baby Sole fish grilled, Mixed grilled fish fillets, Sea Bass fillets and Lamb Fillets were all beautifully presented and all tasted fabulous. Desserts of: 2 creme brulee, Orange tart and a chocolate lava cake, all 'hit the mark' for quality, taste and size. With coffee included and the water and wine, our total bill of 155 Euros for 4 people was very acceptable indeed. We will be visiting again very soon. Thank you Chrissy's for a memorable evening.

We visited here a few days ago for our anniversary & it was well worth it. The service from all staff was impeccable, plus the chef actually serving & visiting all diners is exceptional. We had the 4 course tasting menu, which with all the surprise courses as well we left stuffed, wowed, & wishing we lived in Portugal to return. We've experienced a few Michelin starred restaurants over the years, Bon Bon has out shone them all!

I generally avoid Portuguese traditional restaurants for a number of reasons tho this restaurant has now become my favourite.
I have no idea how many courses we had but each with delicious and well proportioned. Traditional food served with imagination and quality in equally comfortable surroundings with attentive and polite staff.
Booking is a must, even inJanuary.

What a fantastic little restaurant this is. Enormous fish and chips ,delicious, and the prawn skewers are pretty good too. Have to book well in advance as this is a very busy place. Libby is the perfect front man with his witty banter and he knows how to work the tables. Caters well for children and interacts well with everybody. Prices are very fair as quality of the food is excellent. Then there is the after dinner port too which is well topped up, and included in the price. Just a great place to eat in Carvoeiro. Dank je.!

Every year we make a booking and arrive here, fairly early in the evening. I discuss the various diets amongst the family while booking, and the chef minds this in his cooking. We have vegetarian, nut free, and sometimes a vegan amongst us,but this is never a problem.
Food is beautifully presented, delicious and the staff attentive, together this makes a "must go" visit every year.
Please don't change O Leao de Porches.
