We golf at Torrey Pines south course every weekend, hence of course, dining at The Grill is especially a favorite spot on the weekends. But last month, we were a little disappointed when we made reservations for Father’s Day and figured later that they didn’t offer a special brunch menu. One would assume that after a round of father-son teeing off at Torrey, The Grill or A.R. Valentien at the Lodge would be a nice place to sit down with family for brunch, but neither of the Lodge’s restaurants offered anything special for Father’s Day. It was the usual, same-old, limited-option lunch/brunch menu. We dined for Mother’s Day special lunch at their fine dining at A.R. and were looking forward to more casual yet a special menu in addition to the grill’s regular brunch especially for Father’s Day.For our ‘reserved’ outdoor table, while the seating hostesses were sweet at check-in counter, the one who seated us was not flexible to let us sit further away from the noisy crowded tables when all the tables at the back of the patio were empty. Not sure why restaurants make it so difficult and unaccommodating about seating even when 70% of the tables are available. Once the occupied-tables fills up to more than 50% capacity we do not mind wherever they seat us. It should be that simple! Having said that, The Grill was still enjoyable on sunny Father’s Day afternoon to dine and bask in the calm vibe with nice views overlooking the south course. Overhead-heaters on the patio took care of the chill in the air from Torrey’s coastal breeze. Our pleasant and friendly server Miguel was quick to bring out the drinks. Food was hearty and well-portioned. Everyone in our family enjoyed their meals, especially my son who indulged in for a treat of a generous $20 Belgian Waffle plate topped with fresh strawberries, but the crowning stroke was the flavor of honey-pecan butter that made it super-delicious. However, not sure why The Grill doesn’t expand their menu as much as they’ve extended the space, spruced up and glamorized the outdoor deck. I hope to see them bring small-eats like house-made herbed flat-breads/pizza-breads topped with grilled chicken/ grilled vegetables. As good the food was, we regretted ordering the drinks from their poorly concocted ‘Brunch Libations’ list. A $15 Bloody Mary tasted like diluted cocktail sauce; it came ‘without’ celery-stick, olives or lime and an additional $1.50 was charged for Tito’s vodka that did nothing to make it’s taste palatable. $12 Bellini was cheap quality bland prosecco, with slight color of peach but without the flavor and it had no bubbles. Just because of Father’s Day, the price of the same old a ’la carte and yet limited weekend brunch-menu of popular dishes were higher (with no upgrades) than on regular weekends. Although I haven’t loved any of their cocktails I’ve tried before, we’ll always return to explore and see if changes or more additions are made after my feedback.Thank you for taking the time to share your most recent dining experience at The Grill at Torrey Pines. We're glad to hear Miguel provided you with the highest level of service, and that your son enjoyed our tasty house-made Belgian Waffle. We sincerely apologize for your initial seating arrangements. We appreciate your feedback and we have shared this our team. Thank you again, we look forward to your next visit.
