Kerby's Koney Island

Had a little breakfast for dinner tonight at a Detroit diner known more for their hot dogs. In fact, it's right in their name, "Kerby's Koney Island". But, it looks like they've got a lot of good choices there, and I'm always up for breakfast-for-dinner, so instead of having a chili dog, I got a Farmer's omelet. That wasn't the only thing I had though. I'm always looking for unexpected little treats at restaurants, and in a straight ahead all-American diner like this, you wouldn't expect to get "zucchini fries", so naturally I had to try them. They were great! Best thing I had. I love to get surprised like that - coming into a hot dog joint and getting something you'd never expect. They served them with either Ranch or the Tzatziki dressing that they put on their gyros. I dipped them in the Tzatziki, and it was glorious. That could've been my meal right there. But it wasn't. I got the aforementioned Farmer's omelet (green peppers onions, tomatoes, ham, and cheddar) with hash browns and wheat toast. They also brought out an old school rack o' jelly filled to the brim with grape and strawberry jellies along with orange marmalade, which is what I had. The omelet was good, a bit bland but better with a generous shake or two of salt and pepper. Hash browns were crispy, toast was perfect. And the service - that was the best! Super friendly and nice, my waitress was attentive without being annoying, easy to talk to, and ready with pertinent recommendations; a real gem.Maybe I'll come back someday for a hot dog or a burger that they're known for, but tonight I was happy to get a good breakfast.

I liked their big bread, I ordered chicken kabob with soup and grilled vegetables. Served quickly, I liked the garlic side with the bread, chicken is good. I was disappointed with the grilled vegetables, they could be well seasoned.

Went September 2, 2017 for dinner with family. We love the Perch Dinner, lightly coated, good portions and very flavorful. Also the Stuffed Cabbage dinner was very good , and all dinners had choice of sides. The flaming cheese appetizer was a great start. Great food every visit!

Athens Souvlaki

After reading the reviews here on Tripadvisor, a friend and I decided to go on a weeknight so we could avoid the thundering herd of folks who would be waiting for seats at what one reviewer called "the best Greek restaurant in the state." We were shocked to find that we were the third table in the entire restaurant. Literally, the staff outnumbered diners.I had wondered why, living in the area, I had never heard of this restaurant. I suspect that my friends operate under the principle our mothers' drilled into us --if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all.We ordered a gyro platter and a combination platter. The gyro meat was sliced much thinner than I like and was reheated to the point that it was dry. The house made pita tasted like griddle grease that had gone slightly bad as another reviewer noted. The pastichio was dry, had a crispy (burned) layer of cheese on top and was covered with a greasy, unappetizing sauce. Unfortunately this sauce covered everything else on the combo plate. The moussaka was topped with the same burned cheese/greasy sauce that tormented the pastichio. The sides, greasy, overcooked canned veggies, swam in the same sauce. What's with the sauce? The bean soup was passable.I am no expert on Greek food, but I do know that this is the worst Greek food I've had. Street gyros are fresher and better than the ones here. I also love a dive. Good food is good food. I'm no snob for "atmosphere" or "ambiance." Unfortunately, this place couldn't deliver either good food nor good ambiance.I gave it two stars because neither of us were sickened by the food. We won't be going back and will be sure to disobey our mothers and let others know that this isn't the place to go for food or atmosphere.
