Bistrot d'Orsay has been situated in picturesque Collins Street for 20 years, in an area regarded as the ‘Paris End’. The interior is instantly evocative of the French capital with trompe l’oeil ceiling and a towering vintage French poster adorning the di

We have waited ages to return and now know why. Beautiful ambiance, friendly, warm and professional French staff. Delicious food and as you would expect a great wine list. This really like being back in Paris for us. We shared the charcuterie platter (note the Chicken Liver pate was sublime). I went for the lamb special while the man did the beef. We unashamedly shared the pear tarte tatin and a lovely dessert wine. Could not have been happier

The Parisian waiter who now calls Melbourne home, tables for two which somehow accommodate four, long and narrow, specials scribed in haste on vintage mirrored walls, hustle and bustle as the door to the kitchen constantly swings, stained wooden floors and butcher's paper tablecloth. It sounds, smells and tastes like that little place you found on your first trip to Paris, 4th arrondissement, down by the Seine. A truly authentic experience ... and voilà the food is très bonBetween our four we had for starters ... sardines, moules, langoustine and scallops, each dish magnificent. Almost forgot the extraordinary crusty bread and most divine butter. For main fillet de boeuf, steak tartare, entrecote and whole fish whiting. To a standard that let's just say, was better than what you get in France. Certainly for the price. And now for the icing on the cake ... its BYO (Sunday to Friday).

Although this cosy little café has rebranded itself as the French Wine Café, it still serves nice breakfasts (wine free, I might add!) We popped in a couple of times whilst staying at The Blackman, where it opens up from the foyer. The first time we were looking for something light to start the day and hubbie settled for the fresh fruit salad with honey drizzled yoghurt – a big serve, nice and fresh…mmm. I perused the lovely range of pastries available and opted for the generously proportioned almond croissant. The coffee is very good too. The second time we were looking for something more substantial and had the rösti with smoked trout, and the croque madame; both were well executed, nicely presented and thoroughly enjoyed. The staff are friendly enough and the service lacked nothing. We’ll be staying at the hotel again soon and we plan to enjoy breakfast at this nice little café once more.

Bistro Thierry delivered a great experience for our special occasion. Met warmly at the door, we were shown to a good table and assisted with some parcels and jackets. We had actually looked at the online menu (both food and wine) and decided what we wanted, so ordering was easy. Drinks were served quickly and with friendly efficiency. The fit out of Thierry's is something of a draw card in itself - certainly takes you to Paris! Our food was top quality - particularly the lamb shoulder: melt in the mouth texture. I can see why it is rated so highly, and would certainly support that.We are delighted to hear you enjoyed your BT experience. Customer satisfaction is our number one goal so it is great to learn this has been achieved on this occasion. We look forward to welcoming you back. Merci beaucoup!

Chez Olivier at its new location is really singing! Our experience was great from beginning to end. Service is efficient and timely and very friendly (all the waiting staff had a smile ready). An interesting menu: we had a goats cheese entre wrapped in filo surrounded by a light salad, followed by the confit of duck. Both were delicious and well balanced. The wine list was adequate, although I would have expected to see a few more Burgundy wines on the list. No table cloths but it did have cloth napkins. The restaurant was very popular on the night we were there, and rightly so. A top destination.

We picked out the “Gypsy” bistro on a whim, having a penchant for French food and wanting something within walking distance to where we were staying. We were so glad we did! Located in a beautiful old building, the ambience is warm, welcoming and chic simplicity. There’s no haughtiness in the authentic French service here, either – from our greeting at the door, throughout our meal and up to being helped into our jackets on the way out, we loved it and couldn’t fault it. Hubbie even managed to get himself a bit tangled up getting his second sleeve on and the staff member assisting gently guided his arm into place, while we all shared a giggle. The dim candlelight means you do have to peer closely at the menu if you’re approaching the senior end of life’s spectrum but it makes for a beautiful glow, very flattering ;-) Superbly crusty baguette to nibble on was much appreciated, though the butter portion could have been a tiny bit more generous (note: this is my only minor criticism of the entire meal!). The regular menu holds many traditional delights, beautifully supported by the temptations of the blackboard specials. Hubbie’s escargots were served in traditional, garlicky style and pronounced delish. I opted to start with the pepperberry liver parfait and what a gastronomically divine experience it was. The little pot of silky smooth parfait was exquisitely flavoursome, the richness beautifully cut by the crowning mixture of pickles, and there was a veritable mountain of wickedly unctuous, wafer thin toasts to spread it on. Choosing our mains was no easy task – the scotch fillet on the regular menu beckoned (in no small part because it included chips!) but the Bavette a la Bordelaise from the blackboard was also begging attention. Eventually we opted for one of each and both were excellent, though I’d have to say the bavette, a meltingly tender slab of flank steak, liberally anointed with red wine sauce was probably the winner by a slim margin. A shared side of salad leaves was all the extra we needed. The wine list is most impressive and if you had the notion to do so, you could cause serious harm to your bank account with some of the offerings. However, there’s more than a sprinkling of good, solid wines at highly realistic prices and there’s also the option of wine by the glass, and in small and medium sized carafes. Although we were quite full, hubbie managed the super light, citrus meringue tart, served with a quenelle of tangy calamansi sorbet. A delicious, out-of-the-ordinary quince liqueur rounded things out nicely. We were impressed at the excellent value for one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time!Thank you for joining us at Bistro Gitan, and for passing along your lovely feedback. We endeavour to offer the highest standards of food and service, and it's wonderful to hear that your expectations of the Bistro were matched. We hope that we'll see you again soon for another delicious meal. Best wishes, Bistro Gitan team

After my partner and I had 3 courses each, most meals were good, not amazing, but good. The dessert Tarte Tatin was a big let down but not as big a let down as being charged $20 per bottle of wine for corkage! We had some really nice bottles of French wine, we brought back from France and wanted to enjoy these with our French meal. Chez Bagou openly advertises BYO on a Tuesday and Sunday night on the website, however there is no reference of the corkage charge here nor on any menus we were presented with. When we sat down my partner queried the BYO he saw on the website with the waiter, yet still no mention of the $20 per bottle corkage charge. A little transparency here would have gone a long way. Needless to say receiving the bill and seeing a $40 charge for a bottle and a half of wine left such a sour note on what was supposed to be a really special evening for my partner and I. We have previously dined here and enjoyed it hence we were looking forward to coming back. We let the waiter know we were expecting a corkage charge, that goes without saying, but an amount of $40 was not appreciated especially as there was no transparency surrounding the charge. $40 is simply gross profiteering off your customers, it would be far better to not offer BYO on any night. After my partner and I dined here he sent an email to Chez Bagou to give feedback through the right channels, we never received a response!
