Vraiment dommage...

Like the other french reviews stated, you wouldnt expect this level of cooking by looking at this restaurant's location. Located in a small town amongst irrelevant local shops, it doesnt look like much from outside. The dinning room is really ordinary, and not separated from the kitchen which can cause some unpleasant smells while youre eating. But all this becomes irrelevant considering the quality of the dishes. The chef working there is really skilled, and it goes beyond simply making "good" food. It reaches the level where his dishes have "personnality" and where even a common looking dish will surprise you, especially with his fine use of spices. Its the kind of place where making a choice in the menu becomes useless as u know whatever you choose will not disapoint you. Menu that is quite limited anyways, but it is usually a good sign for small restaurants like this.Additionnaly it is by far the best price/quality ratio you can find, a full menu beeing around 20 euros where youd expect much more for this level of cooking. The quality of a great restaurant with the price of a small local one. If you ever happen to travel nearby, definitly give this place a try and dont be bumped off by its looks. Hell id say its even worth a detour.

We were travelling through the Loire Valley and unexpectedly came to the end of a road where the sat nav instructed us to "Board the Ferry"! Having been somewhat surprised at this instruction, we parked the car at the ferry car park and noticed an unassuming little cafe and from the outside we weren't expecting much. Once through the doors however we knew there was something different about this place - for a start it was filled with locals enjoying various meals that all looked fantastic, and there were no chips or fast food items to be seen. We were directed to a table outside in the sunshine overlooking the Loire and with a view of the comings and goings of the ferry We selected the plat du jour - duck sausages served with potatoes and green vegetables and a poivre vert sauce. This was followed by rhubarb crumble dessert - all for 10 euro a head. My mouth is watering as I write this as I can remember how delicious it was. The lovely lady serving was the gilding on the lily. We continued on our journey across the Loire on the ferry which, incidently, was free of charge.

This really is a special restaurant and definately worth a travel! We had a very nice 3 course menue in the evening. The family-style restaurant really delivers the atmosphere of a "maison". This is underlined by the family serving and cooking for the guest. Besides the excellent food, the house serves good quality wine at a affordable range. If you have time and are in the area, I recommend this hiden treasure!

Have eaten here with my wife on several occasions during the week at lunchtime and have always found the food excellent and very good value for money. The service is usually prompt and always friendly / correct. Have never eaten here other than at luncvhtime during the week because the prices are too high.

One of my best meals in this 10 day tour in the region. Three courses and wine. Each course was imaginative and full of the flavours of fresh ingredients. The bill was less than I paid for more traditional, more predictable cuisine. Young talent at work. Will go far! Un grand merci pour cette belle experience culinaire!

We stayed in the nearby Hotel Nuit de Retz. A very short walk to the Restaurant Auberge. Quite a large room but lacking just a little in character. The staff were pleasant and helpful. I had the whole crab starter (see photo) which was very well presented and was fresh and flavoursome. The restaurant did not supply the cutlery pick normally supplied with crab or lobster, which was not such a good decision, and I was left only with the cracker and a knife to do the business. My partner had a foie gras de canard which was good. For mains, I had a ribs dish which was tasty. My partner had a brochette which was pleasant too.My partner's desert was very large (if a little over sweet). The service seemed to drop off a little when it came to trying to get the bill. The staff seemed distracted by what was going on in the adjoining bar. However, all in all not a bad experience, and better than we expected. Not unreasonable value.
