Fantastic place, day or night, whether morning espresso or afternoon beer. Service with a smile from Fabrice. Wonderful outdoor seating on the street. Table oysters fresh from the market, a quirky (!) Unisex toilet and a liberal view when it comes to settling the bill. Awesome place.

The courtyard is scruffy and full of local workers eating gigantic portions. Some of them obviously come for lunch here almost every day. A couple of foreigners too, probably expats. The food is hardly gourmet but it is obviously what these locals expect - they mostly have the set lunch. Today it is wholesome cauliflower salad, home made meat pasties with veg, decent supermarket cheese, dessert. The price is under 14 euros. One lady asks for a smaller portion when she sees her plate and Madame is impeccably polite. If you want a smaller portion, ask in advance or order two starters! You will still have more than enough. I have lamb chops from the carte, four large beauties with chips and salad. Husband has fish soup, steak and salad. Inside the room is like the ones I remember from 40 years ago. Look at the pictures and you will see what I mean. It's ideal for people with large appetites who do plenty of exercise or who fancy a siesta afterwards (or to feed your teenagers). So reassuring to find these places still exist in an age of Macdonalds and motels. It's on the ground floor with parking outside so totally accessible and suitable for dogs.

Beautiful decor, and owner was the perfect host all evening. Took time and patience explaining menu to us Ausies and was of good humour. All dishes were brilliant right from the salads through to lamb shanks (nice sticky roasted lamb), Seafood pie (soufflé) excellent with choice seafood. The St. Jacques scallops huge and perfectly cooked. Deserts, superb. Could not fault this place, our #2 for meals in France.

What a little gem of a restaurant. Unassuming exterior hides a lovely little interior patio, open to the stars and under lit trees. The wines are made right there and are delicious. The food was marvelous and we kept pinching ourselves to be sure that this wasn't just a fairy tale setting. Great romantic, "untouristy" place to spend an evening.

Marvelous place with excellent cuisine! We were traveling via Le Boat and changed our route to visit the restaurant and had unbelievable experience at Les Platanes. Strongly recommend, hope to visit it once again next year.

Le Provence

Le Provence was the first restaurant that we visited in Capestang at the recommendation of Brits living there. It's a cozy, full-menu pizzeria/restaurant with with a pleasant courtyard, helpful staff, and reasonable rates.

Six of us traveled from Malta to enjoy a few days on the Canal. Capestang was one of our stop overs. We found Le Provence right next to the canal on a beautiful evening and sat outside to enjoy a meal in wonderful surroundings. The food was excellent especially the steaks - perfectly cooked and huge! A good wine selection also. Our waitress was a pleasure and more than capable of handling our jokes.

This restaurant has changed hands since our last visit, but going on today's lunch, the quality remains excellent. Check this out: the 15 Eur formule menu offered a three course lunch with wine bread and water that was consistently excellent from start to finish. Just a couple of choices per course unless you wanted to go a la carte. It was too noisy outside today because of building works opposite, so we had a corner table for two in the quieter and cooler interior, which retains its clean modern aesthetic. The loos are spotless - always a good sign. Anyway, back to the food: to start, there was a refreshing cucumber carpaccio served with a quenelle of black olive tapenade, or an utterly delicious veloute of courgette and carrot. Good bread; very drinkable rose (a decent glassful each). The main was either tagliatelle bolognaise, or what we both had - a piece of hake with a gorgeously buttery herb crust, served with asparagus and an orange and vanilla flavoured rice. We didn't stop to deliberate over pudding, as there was an apricot compote made from fruit picked in the garden yesterday, sprinkled with crushed pistachios and served with a boule of good vanilla ice-cream: absolute bliss. I finished with a punchy espresso served with biscotti. Service by le patron was efficient and friendly and I would unreservedly recommend La Galiniere for its quality to price point.

Le Pourquoi Pas

At the Malvies bridge near Capestang Languedoc Roussillon you will find “Le Pourquoi Pas”. Situated beside the Canal du Midi, a Unesco World Heritage Site, this former hostel was a resting place catering for the boatmen and their horses in centuries gone-

We last visited le Pourquoi Pas some twenty years previously. In the interim there have been multiple changes of ownership. The most recent one has established a strong team in the kitchen and dining room of the old lock-keeper's cottage. We ate inside as there was a strong breeze, but I would certainly recommend visitors to sit outside in clement weather so as to enjoy the cavalcade of passing traffic on the Canal du Midi. When this place was first set up the, then, English proprietor used to place a direction sign on the main road nearby. Very regularly it used to disappear as local restauranteurs took exception to the simple charm and fine, homespun cooking of the place tempting their clientele away. It seems that those days are long gone and Le PP is now an established part of the local scene. I would certainly recommend giving it a try.
