Where to eat British food in Banjul: The Best Restaurants and Bars

July 17, 2020 Janean Rudisill

Reviews on British food in Banjul, Banjul Division, Gambia. At the mouth of the Gambia River, Banjul is an oft overlooked seaport hub of economic and cultural activity. Welcoming visitors into town is Arch 22, a historical monument that also houses a modest textile museum. The city itself is home also to the African Heritage Museum as well as numerous bustling markets. The surrounding area boasts sunny beach resorts as well as nature reserves and national parks where monkeys, birds, hippos and hyenas go about their daily routines in the wild.

NOT the 2014-16 eurodive establishment under that name. Now refitted African run and a local music based meeting and socialising spot. Remarkably rather Afro-family orientated and you will see some of the local de moda better dressers boy and girl. A disappointment food wise, I was served a rather overpriced over cooked half chicken at D225, better to drop the food and stick to a lively bar theme. Comes alive after 10 with the drop in crowd, friendly and chatty 20's 30's set. To an extent picking up the theme of the now demised and missed regee bar Dufflaz a few doors down. Has a similar oil paint art work interior, worth a look at in itself. Cross the highway at Palma Rima Hotel and walk up Kololi Road past the well lit pharmacy, you will see the lights and hear the music. But a local taxi will find it with ease.

Ate here a couple of times during our stay in Gambia, staff and surroundings very nice. Food generally good but had Carbonara one night and it was made with tinned luncheon meat- not too good. Cultural music is ok but can get monotonous after a while, but If you’ve not seen it before then it’s fine. This restaurant is under new management and better than it’s previous namesake.

Nice service from friendly people, so in that way they live up to the name. We ate there twice. First time for lunch and it took perhaps 30-40 minutes to get the food and there were hardly anyone else. Next time we ordered take out and it took them 1h15m to make it! And then when we opened to food it was the wrong order! No chicken curry but chicken cordon bleau. Well, at least it tasted all right, because there was NO chance, that we would wait for them to correct the order! About 33 % of the price of the restaurant in the hotel. At night it is very noisy.Thank you for your review, I apologise for the length of time it took for order to be completed and sometimes mistakes can happen, even thou you didn’t want your order changed please let the staff know as they are more then happy to assist. Your review will be shown to the staff so they can look at want went wrong that day and where improvements can be made. We hope to see you again.

Cabana's beach bar & restaurant

Cabana's Beach Bar & Restaurant is the perfect setting for a day on the beach with excellent food, free sunbeds and free wifi. In the evening it is the perfect location for your a la carte dinner whilst watching the beautiful sunset

This place offers free sunbeds when buying food and drinks. Excellent fresh cooked meal, in my opinion the best I’ve eaten in the Gambia. Cold draft beer on the +35C sunny beach is magnificent experience! Excellent and very friendly beach and food service! All intrusive sellers are banned by the guards and this is especially important in the Gambia tourist areas. Excellent ocean view, unbelievably beautiful at sunset. Three times a week they have live music, not loud, not disturbing (as opposite to many other places featuring loud drums), so you can still relax while they are playing. The only minus is that property is relatively small, so most of the time beach is crowded, most of “good places” are being reserved by that bunch of oldies spending there every day so you have not a chance to get a good place no matter how early you come there. We were visiting this place many times a week and were always happy with food and service.Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time with us. It's our first year running Cabana's so all feedback is very useful. We will ensure that the beach is more accessible to everybody next year and beds will be allocated on a first come first served basis which is fair for everybody. We hope to see you again very soon.

Probably the closest you will come to local food - they serve Domada, Benechin, Yassa - all given a European twist and served very well - also the Captain Fish with lime sauce is equally good - service is very friendly and good if not busy. The only downside - very loud live music comprising 90% drumming starts at about 9-ish - this may be attractive to some - but not if you have unimpaired hearing!!!

We ate at the Calypso four times and also visited for the live music on Sunday afternoon. If you are a guest at the Ocean Bay Hotel next door you will consider yourselves extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic restaurant on your doorstep. The food was delightful and the staff just lovely. Go once and I bet you'll go again.
