Cabana's beach bar & restaurant

Cabana's Beach Bar & Restaurant is the perfect setting for a day on the beach with excellent food, free sunbeds and free wifi. In the evening it is the perfect location for your a la carte dinner whilst watching the beautiful sunset

This place offers free sunbeds when buying food and drinks. Excellent fresh cooked meal, in my opinion the best I’ve eaten in the Gambia. Cold draft beer on the +35C sunny beach is magnificent experience! Excellent and very friendly beach and food service! All intrusive sellers are banned by the guards and this is especially important in the Gambia tourist areas. Excellent ocean view, unbelievably beautiful at sunset. Three times a week they have live music, not loud, not disturbing (as opposite to many other places featuring loud drums), so you can still relax while they are playing. The only minus is that property is relatively small, so most of the time beach is crowded, most of “good places” are being reserved by that bunch of oldies spending there every day so you have not a chance to get a good place no matter how early you come there. We were visiting this place many times a week and were always happy with food and service.Thank you for your feedback. We are so pleased that you enjoyed your time with us. It's our first year running Cabana's so all feedback is very useful. We will ensure that the beach is more accessible to everybody next year and beds will be allocated on a first come first served basis which is fair for everybody. We hope to see you again very soon.

John Raymond's Bar & Restaurant

Reviewed By Donald B

In 1983 a Gambian fisherman called John Raymond decided to hang out his nets to dry and began a small beach bar on Kotu beach. It was built near to the family rice fields! This was the very first restaurant along Kotu beach, a matter of great pride to his family. The business thrived until in 2,000 John became ill and the business was sold to pay expenses. Sadly John passed away in 2003 but his family wanted to continue his dream. They began to raise funds to regain control of the restaurant until finally, in November 2,008, their dream was achieved and once again the Raymond family became owners of the John Raymond Restaurant.Sine then, John's daughter, Therese, son Peter and his cousin, Edu, have run the restaurant with other family members and friends.Their philosophy is a simple one, good food at reasonable prices and in this they excede. You can have breakfast, including a proper English fry up, lunch and dinner. They have everything from pizza, burgers to Gambian dishes such as Yassa and Domoda, along with other European dishes. The family share their good fortune with those less fortunate and local boys look after the site day and night. So, relax on the beach, enjoy the best home made pizza or pancakes for lunch, have a few Julbrew or baobab juices, relax, just chill out! This is a true Gambian success story, a dream that has gone on for 37 years. Long may it continue. The owners, Edu, Therese and Peter are usually around for a chat, except when Edu is organising a fishing trip with his brother, Victor, or an excursion. What an industrious family, I can't wait until next year to see them once more. Give them my love.

I ordered the fillet steak....... Er more like strip loin. Was very tough. Very small amount of chips.Husband had the beef fajitas. Again tough.Unfortunately he was then poorly that night and for the next 24 hours D+V. Everything comes smothered in weird sauces, maybe to try and disguise the meat? This was not a cheap meal.......£30.00 for The Gambia?? Someone's getting rich by ripping off tourists.

Went one night for evening meal and was left waiting for 15 mins and only then, after we had asked for service, did someone come. We decided to leave without ordering as there appeared to be a long delay, even though they were not busy. We went another evening and the service was again terrible and we noted other diners had simila problems Tried decided to give them a third chance, this time at breakfast time - it was ok but then again, we were the only people there!! Wouldn't go again unless they upped their gear!

Probably the closest you will come to local food - they serve Domada, Benechin, Yassa - all given a European twist and served very well - also the Captain Fish with lime sauce is equally good - service is very friendly and good if not busy. The only downside - very loud live music comprising 90% drumming starts at about 9-ish - this may be attractive to some - but not if you have unimpaired hearing!!!

My husband and I visited Solomon's 4 or 5 times during our stay in Kotu. This is a friendly place with a great view. Drinks were served quickly. We ate here one night. I chose the Potato dish and my husband had a fish dish. Both meals were fantastic, but were a little slow arriving. We were given a complimentary garlic bread whilst we waited. We had great service from Buba, and also some fascinating conversation. Well worth a visit to Solomons
