Where to eat American food in Holland: The Best Restaurants and Bars

August 9, 2019 Ying Subia

Reviews on American food in Holland, Michigan, United States. Founded by Dutch Calvinists in 1847, the city of Holland, Michigan, is an outpost of Dutch culture and tradition in the midst of the American Midwest, home to dikes, canals and even an authentic Dutch windmill. Proud of its heritage, the city purchased 100,000 tulip bulbs from the Netherlands back in 1927, and these colorful flowers still fill the city's gardens and parks with color annually, just in time for the famous Tulip Time Festival, attended by over half a million people every year.

We went as a couple with our toddler. I was a little hesitant about bringing a child, but it was a little more relaxed for a "nice" place than I was expecting, which is fantastic for any kids tagging along. Our food was very good, but we did find the service a bit too slow. The table behind us felt the same way, as we heard them ask a staff member if they would have a server at some point. We also waited quite a while before someone came to even get drinks started for us...we sort of felt forgotten after we'd been sitting for quite some time. Me and my husband LOVED the spicy Thai lettuce wraps appetizer. Our main dishes were still tasty, but compared to the appetizer they were a slight letdown...that's how much we loved the appetizer. I would order the Thai lettuce wraps as my actual meal next time. My "Moscow Mule" (called something else there), was a little too light on the lime for my liking, so I asked for some extra lime and it was perfect. My husband got a beer on tap that he wanted to try, so he was happy with that. Outdoor space looked lovely, but we ate inside. We'd definitely go back, just wish the service was little more on-point.Thank you for your feedback Stephanie!

This is a 3.5 star review. Adorable brewery with a cool vibe and a storefront for beer and spirits purchases, with a fun Bloody Mary bar on Saturday which we indulged in! Our server MJ was hilarious, upbeat & friendly, very honest with his recommendations on the menu... the spicy fried chicken sandwich was pretty good as was the fish sandwich. The Bahn Michigan fell a but short as the pork belly was way too fatty and no rendering of any of the fat, not crispy at all, so too heavy and overly rich. Also could use more flavor.A haven for beer enthusiasts which we were not, but still enjoyed.

We arrived around 5:30 on a Sunday for dinner. Hostess told us the wait would be 40 minutes and took our cell number. We waited over an hour and then were told that we still couldn't be seated because the kitchen was backed up even though there were multiple open tables. We have a special needs child and asked if we could just sit down and get him drinks while we waited. We were told no. This is not an acceptable way to treat customers. If there were a problem in the kitchen we could have been told earlier so that we could go elsewhere to get food for our kids. We visit Holland often because our son is at Hope College but will not visit Hops again after we were treated so poorly.PMFANDME,I apologize, on behalf of the restaurant, for the service that you received on the Sunday that you visited us. The host staff and the manager on duty have been briefed on the proper way to handle this situation if it happens in the future.I'd like to talk more in depth about your experience. Please email me at: [email protected] a nice day,

My husband and I had a dinner hosted by a business friend of my husbands, Jon, who said this place is one of his favorites and promised us a great meal and experience. He was not kidding! We had a wonderful experience of smaller ‘tastings’ provided by the chef - this allowed us to taste a wider variety of the menu. We plan on returning again to the area, and will be here again for sure! Hello Stephanie!Thank you so much for your kind words and I cannot wait to welcome you back again. Hope you're having a wonderful summer.Best,Butch

We were part of a large group with a "select" menu. The food was delicious! Some choices are a little different than the usual Holland food, but nothing exotic. This is a nice restaurant, sometimes with tablecloths, refined service, and a slightly higher price. It is not the sort of restaurant you'd want to eat at frequently, but for a special occasion or event. They offer several different dining rooms, a more casual "cafe" type of room, and a lovely shaded outdoor terrace.

There was a time when this was my favorite spot in Holland. The service was so excellent that I enjoyed watching how the waitstaff worked. They were also very attentive to my grandchildren, so they enjoyed it as much as I did. Things have changed. Most of the old wait staff is gone, and the new people go about their jobs, but with no thought to excellence, and my grandchildren are ignored. Its sad to see service deteriorate so much in a year or so. Our waitress talked to us when she took our order, then when she brought the bill. She dropped off our food with little if any comment. Unfortunately, I had to help my granddaughter in the bathroom, and when we returned our table was cleared. I didn't want to wait for more food, so we went home and ate. Its not a bad diner if that's what you're looking for, but is no longer the showcase it once was.

Three beautiful entrees, 1 seared ahi tuna, 2 grilled avocado plates. Beautiful presentations, cheddar ale soup is the best, tasty and well seasoned food, comfortable seating, strawberry-line martinis were excellent! Considering the busy lunch hour, service was great from server Rae, along with reasonable prices and friendly staff.

Our large group was seated quickly during the early dinner rush, and 0our server did a wonderful job with both getting our varied orders and spacing the serving properly and with a smile. The food ranged from salmon bakes to wet burritos to chicken dinners, all with sides, and all were just really good. The prices are very reasonable for the quantity and quality of the meal along with the service. There's no horsin' around here, for the restaurant just works hard to give all a good time!Thank you for your great review! We appreciate your dining with us and are glad we met your expectations :)
