Kilcunda General Store

The General Store is always crowded which tells you how popular it is. Kilcunda is a delightful little village with magnificent coastal vistas. Some of this view can be captured from the tables on the front deck. On hot or wet days it is also possible to sit inside of in the leafy garden out the back. The menu is fairly simple, but the food is tasty and wholesome. Local wares and produce are on sale and the whole setting is comfortable and laidback. A popular spot!

Cafe @ Churchill Island

We were surprised by the quality of this café. We arrived at 11.45am and realised most of the events are scheduled from 1-4pm. As it was a cold and rainy day, we sat down for lunch at this café before heading out. The café was warm and cozy. Our favourites were the cheese board and scones with Devonshire tea. Coffees were not bad either.

Usually the locals hang outs are the best but to me this is sailing along on reputation and although we are pretty local we didn't get whatever the vibe is. The coffee was reasonable and the food ok. I have no idea why the locals come here and they certainly do so there is something going for it. Perhaps the locals like it because it's at the quiet end of town and you won't be bothered by the tourists. It's not for me to guess but two visits was enough for me to head back down into busy San Remo for what I consider to be better coffee and food. Maybe I'm just picky but it's not for me.

A Wednesday night and not many patrons in. So our expectation of food was high. We were a group of 7 who work with food almost everyday commercially and so know how food can be prepared and served. It was a night off for us and so time to enjoy a meal we didn’t have to plan, prepare, serve and then clean up. With only a few other diners, there is time to prepare meals well. Alas, the food was average. I’d really like to give it more than 3 stars but here’s why I can’t. The entree crumbed haloumi chips with sumac sauce was over cooked and the haloumi was rubbery not squeaky as it should be and sauce bland. Tasted more like something from the freezer section of a supermarket for kids than a tasty entree. Thankfully that’s all I ordered. The guys enjoyed their steak burgers and beef burgers. Portion size was good and plenty of chips. The entree calamari wasn’t fresh which is disappointing as we could see the sea water out the window. The parmagiana? I’ll sit on the fence. Two of our party ordered it, one liked it, one didn’t. The one who didn’t said it was tomato paste on the chicken (which the fillet was a nice thick size) and then a strip of undercooked bacon and a slice of cheese on top. Whereas the other person felt it was tasty and nicely cooked. That goes to show the difference when it comes to food reviews. The place itself is very large And as you enter there is a bar on the right, dining hall on the left and accommodation upstairs. There are three billiard tables. Lots of tv screens. A kids room and more. This place is used to dealing with crowds. Lots of outdoor seating that is busy on warm summer balmy nights with great views over the water. Staff were all lovely and very helpful. Service was fast and efficient + a smile to boot!Notes: wheelchair friendly. Kid friendly. Dietaries catered for - just let them know. Good parking out the front. d e b i Hi Debi,Thank you for taking the time to review us and doing so in a well-rounded approach. We would like to assure you that we hold our customer service standards and quality of food in the highest importance and we are disappointed to hear not all patrons on your table were 100% satisfied with their meals or parts of their meals. We have a series of procedures in place to ensure we are made aware when a customer is not happy, so we can rectify any issues. One of these procedures is providing check backs to all tables, ensuring any issues can be resolved in a timely manner. I assure you the Haloumi chips are not from the freezer section and in regard to the calamari not being fresh – while we would love to source calamari locally like we do our flake, unfortunately due to the nature of the local industry a constant supply is not possible. All points have been passed on to the relevant managers and your positive feedback on staff has also been passed on.We ask that you please get in contact so we may offer you a dining voucher for your next visit, and we thank you again for bringing these points to our attention. We value all feedback. Kind regards, Westernport Hotel Management.
