I love this town for its rustic, mountain ridge charm. I was sad to see even a small building rise in the middle of the Poblacion. This quaint cafe is one of its saving graces, though. That's why I have returned here for breakfast, with every visit to Sagada. The fixtures in its interior are not much different from other cafes, except for a majestic mural by local artist Russell Maier. It explains the idea of the Dap-ayan, a traditional community get-together. Ask the owner, Jed Angway, about the details depicted in the artwork. He is generous with imparting knowledge about Sagada and Igorot culture.Food is not an aspect I can greatly expound on, for I have ordered the same, reliable Cheese and Mushroom Omelette for 4 visits in a row. The omelette was always thick and hearty, made with a mix of grocery store button mushrooms and organic farm grown varieties. It comes with two of their own baked buns and bottomless coffee. A steal for 100 pesos! Jed also so sells native take-home goods like honey, tapey (rice wine) and etag (smoked salted pork).

Rust 'n Wood

among the dishes we ordered for lunch, it was the chop suey that actually had a different taste and ingredients. it has corn kernels instead of the usual baby corn, potatoes and green leafy vegetables picked right at their backyard. it tasted nothing like the regular chop suey on ordinary days. their chicken aloha was actually chicken adobo served with pineapple jiuce & bell peppers. can you imagine it? the sola iced tea is being sold with a 100% mark-up. the one thst stood out was the pork chop barbeque marinated in deep sauce. the three pieces at 250/serving was shared among 5 people. by the way, rust and wood was named as such because of the metallic vehicle pieces hanging on wooden walls. it also offers a washroom/toilet for Php 10 each for non-dining guests. if given the chance, i would rather try other restaurants in town for comparative purposes. thanks for your lengthy review but i strongly suggest you read the menu properly the next time you enter a restaurant before even posing an order. also, that you should be open minded when eating out since it is not your kitchen for you to put certain standards for food taste. regarding the chopsuey tasting different, that is because we use vegetable available from our own backyard rather than buying the usual chopsuey vegetables that are full of insecticides and pesticides like broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower for instance. we used corn kernels to bring out the flavor and sweetness of vegetables instead of MSG since we don't have that in our kitchen. Young corns are not grown here or in nearby provinces and if ever there is supply in the market, it would cost 120 pesos for 8-10 pieces. Yes, the chicken aloha is definitely cooked in pineapple and soy sauce as stated in the menu so you should have known that even before ordering since that is how.we defined it there, adobo with pineapple. regarding the Sola, sola companies don't come this far so we have to travel to Baguio City which is 5 hours away to buy our stocks so the buying price in Manila would surely be cheaper as compared here. but just imagine how far you've travelled from Manila to Sagada and how much you paid, same as through with other commodities that become available here. that should be common sense, right?the pork chop barbeque shared by 5 of you is neither our fault. it is clearly stated in the menu that the serving is good for 2-3pax only. another common sense. if you want to argue about the price why it is 250 then let me teach you a little bit of cost accounting. pork is valued at 200/kilo. u need to Marinate it with lemon @100/kilo, garlic, black pepper and soy sauce. grill it and cook it with the sauce made of sesame oil, honey and lemon. serve it with vegetable cuts of tomatoes and cucumber plus the service fee for cooks, waiters and dishwashers. in short, we have basis for our prices. it is not a just a number we picked from elsewhere. how could you just say we named it rust n wood without even asking us. it is so bold of you to even post it where it got its name when you weren't the one to register it with DTI. the pcs of metal.hanging on the wall is simply an accent but it got its name from the house it self that is made out of wood in the inside and galvanized iron gauge 26 on.the outside. and since the house was built in the 1940s the g.i.sheets have become rustic thus the house is rustic and woody so it is named Rust n wood Cafe. regarding the 10 pesos for non dining customers, well, we provide the toilet, sink, water, soap, toilet paper and clean the c.r. and manage the trash for.our dining guests so if you are not a customer of the cafe, you must pay since it is not your house. also for your information, we allow non dining guests to use the toilet since the next pay c.r.s are 2 kilometers away. there is no other toilet available in this area. so just imagine 100 people lining up to use the toilet intended for our cafe guests, do you want to volunteer cleaning after them without collecting a few and probably donate water, tissue and soap for them to use and manage those napkins and diapers they leave. so again my dear, common sense. next time you write a review, don't do it with the intention of just saying or else you will end up shaming yourself. write a review with the intention of giving tips.for.improvement or recommendation instead of trying to assassinate the personality of the establishment just because you paid for its services and you think it is unjust. travel with a heart to touch the communities you reach not to be served like a king or a queen. for sure, you will find it more enjoyable and worthwhile.

The Sagada Lemon Pie House

I love lemon pie so this was on top of my list of food to try in Sagada. The first time I went here, I haven't had breakfast yet. The female staff said that breakfast was not available (only lemon pie) so I decided to go there on a different day.I eventually bought a box of lemon pie for Php 250. I didn't find it delicious at all. I'm sorry but it tasted like dishwashing liquid. It lacked both tartness and sweetness. The only thing tasty about it was the meringue on top. I let family members taste it and they came up with the same comment. The female staff, who I inquired with on both instances, looked like she doesn't enjoy what she's doing. She sounded grumpy, like I bothered her from using her cellphone.Definitely not recommending this. There are other dessert places that offer wonderful desserts in the vicinity.

It's actually more of a cafe than a restaurant. And yes, the claim-to-fame of this unique, local coffee shop is that it serves ALAMID coffee which comes from the dried poop of wild civet cats found only in a very few places in the country. Because of limited supply (which I can easily see why), a cup costs much, much more than your regular brew. I found nothing outstanding or exceptional about it though. Just nice to boast to your friends back home that you’ve tried it right where it is sourced and processed.

We ordered dishes with rice and spaghetti pasta and both staples were served fridge-cold to room temperature-cold, and the pasta was over-cooked. Bread was served with ants. Mosquitoes were a serious annoyance. It's a pity that the taste of what was served was good because just about everything else was completely wrong.

Gaia Cafe & Crafts

This restaurant looks just like an ordinary mystical hut from the outside. We enjoyed a vegan, dinner which include salad, pumpkin soup and tofu rice meals. We also had coffee and tarragon tea. Food was superb at reasonable prices. Service was good except when the crowd got big at lunch so we returned at night for dinner. The staff was courteous enough to inform us of the waiting time. It is advisable to come early if you want to be served quickly. December was a peak month so we understood. We enjoyed the food and the view from the hut is breathtaking. As an avid reader, I love that they have a collection of books for room reading. I also enjoy the warm welcome from their friendly resident dog and cat! Limited parking space. I would love to visit and try their other fare when we travel to Sagada again.
