On our initial visit to this nuevo Latin restaurant, our arrival, by shear coincidence, coincided with the weekday happy hour that runs from 4-6PM. If you are buying that, I have some ocean front property in Nevada that you might be interested in purchasing. Since the weather was uncharacteristically warm and beautiful, we decided to start off by settling in at a table under a large umbrella on the expansive deck while nursing a pair of righteous mojitos. We initially thought the drinks a bit strong, but as the afternoon progressed both we and the mojitos mellowed to such an extent that a second round was deemed a necessity. We then settled our tab and proceeded to stumble our way inside for dinner in one of the two colorfully decorated dining rooms. Though the menu offered an abundance of temptations, we decided to share an ensalada fresca (fresh field greens, cherry tomatoes, mango, and goat cheese tossed with a tamarind-raspberry vinaigrette) that proved to be refreshingly light. For an entree, my wife chose Cana, sugar cane-dark rum caramelized salmon over a quinoa, baby spinach, shitake mushroom and sweet plantain warm salad and ginger lemongrass salsa. Wow!Not to be outdone, and for a change I wasn’t, I ordered tapada de mariscos (nuevo Latin chowder with red snapper, little neck clams, mussels, corn, plantain, yucca, coconut and saffron. The seafood was both abundant and fresh while the broth was nothing short of delicious. Wow and double Wow!

Plaza Azteca

We've enjoyed many meals at Plaza Azteca and never, ever have they failed. Being from Texas, we are very picky about margaritas and guacamole, and, seriously, I would never praise either one without sincerity. The margaritas couldn't be more authentic. The table-made guacamole is simply the very utmost best, not only in an Up East small town but including Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin Mexican restaurants, the best surprise being your own input into the ingredients, heat or no heat, cilantro or no cilantro, tomatoes, onions, lots of avocados. In addition to that fabulous offering, my husband loves the enchiladas, my son the burritos and I love the shrimp tacos, amongst others. Friendly family members make sure your dining experience is top-notch! Recommend highly!

Taqueria El Amigo

Call it serendipity, but my wife and I were looking for another taqueria and happened upon El Amigo. The parking lot is small with only about 4 spaces in front and another 10 or so in the rear. I thought it was order at the counter so I asked for a pair of menus and found a table though 2 minutes later a smiling waitress arrived bearing a tray with 4 salsas and chips. We opted for the 4 taco special that included a 16 ounce soda for a mere $8. My wife chose pollo asada and al pastor while I opted for cochinita and a special of chorizo asada. Each was pretty good with the exception of the chorizo which proved to be both dry and flavorless. I would not hesitate to return the next time we are in the immediate area at lunch time.
