At the Pousada they recommended Geadas. It is from the same company owners. It is also located in an unexpected roadside setting for this quality restaurant. For appetizers they brought a mixed plate of prosciutto, cheese, chorizo, olives and olive oil toasted bread slices. Excellent. we ordered the partridge stewed in vinegar, chorizo and onions and served with fried potatoes, chestnuts and a chestnut puree. This is definitively one of the best partridges we ever tasted. Less successful was the choice of grilled mixed cuts of pork as some pieces were too dry . For dessert they had some natural pineapple as fresh fruit, a rarity in most restaurant leaning into heavy dessert offering. The service was extremely efficient and friendly. The wine selection is very good and at good prices.

Restaurant is located in the town centre. Opens at 6pm. The meal we had was not fantastic, the steak was tough, but maybe we were just unlucky, as the other meals being served all looked very nice. We also found staff not being very friendly, but that is something we generally find in any Portuguese restaurants.

Our dinner was over-long and over-elaborate and the quality of the food did not justify the delay or the florid presentation. The Pousada itself is a fantastic place to stay, but we far preferred the typical food in the local restaurants.

We did not eat here but, the owner was very nice . When we arrived there was only a table for two left. Just the job we thought. But no English and we have a few words. Stalemate. Not quite. One diner spoke English and he came to the table. The restaurants name is Batoque and it is a mushroom restaurant .You can have mushrooms stuffed, mushrooms with rice, mushrooms stuffed with mushrooms, big mushrooms, small mushrooms The name is Portugese for ---Wait for it ---- Mushrooms. Our translator assured us that we would be over the moon with the skill of the chef. But as I am not a big mushroom fan so we were over the door with much groveling for being so dense. The assembled company were very amused with it all. 10 out of 10 for being such twits. There were not reviews in English so I simply went with the stars

Being a resident of Braganca at one point and now a regularly visitor (lots of family in Braganca) my wife and I visited the castle for a walk around the grounds and decided to end it off with a coffee and something to nibble. We were shocked to find the price charged was almost double anywhere else. For instance, you need just to stroll less than a hundred yards away to find more realistic local prices. There is nothing special about this place or it's food to warrant such exorbitant prices. Tourist Beware !!! See attached receipts : Receipt on the left is what you should be paying for a pastry/cake and a can of drink like a Coke â¬1.20 etc. The receipt on the right is what Taska de Ze Tuga charges â¬2.00, Overpriced? You betchya. Now roll that markup across the menu and your paying through your teeth !! Gratos pela vossa visita ao nosso restaurante para beberem um refrigerante e comerem um bolo tÃpico . Foram a um restaurante de comida de Autor para se refrescarem , num ambiente único a olhar para um dos monumentos mais bonitos de Portugal . O Careto is located about 15 minutes' drive north of Braganca in the picturesque village of Varge. The setting is beautiful and the restaurant, which is quite large, looks appropriately rustic, warm and welcoming, both inside and out. Inside there is an open fire, stag-head trophies mounted on the walls and unusual coat racks that utilise deer hooves as hooks. You do get the idea that meat might be the thing here. We were taken here by a Portuguese friend who assured us it was a popular local place for traditional Portuguese food. We had already eaten quite a bit of 'traditional' Portuguese fare - heavily salted meat or fish served up in huge portions with rice and boiled vegetables - and are not big fans, so were a little wary. Sure enough, the restaurant delivered what we expected, There was no written menu, and the main-course options were limited to a choice of pork, steak, chicken or fish. If you visit this place without a Portuguese speaker you might have some trouble. That goes for vegetarians, too, though they could probably get by on the vegetable soup and the green salad that consisted of just roughly chopped lettuce doused in olive oil. Sophisticated the food is not. The meals came out on large platters - much more than any one person could reasonably expect to eat. I ordered the Bacalao, a monstrous lump of heavily salted cod that proved more than a match for me. I swear it will be the last time I ever order that dish. We did enjoy the red wine, though, which was made on the premises. Dessert, coffee and port wine were offered, but no-one could squeeze in another morsel. The bill came to 70 Euros for five, but cheap for this neck of the woods, but there was a hell of a lot of food put in front of us.

There are four meals that stand out from all the other wonderful meals I have had the fortune to eat. Two of them were at this restaurant. There was really not that much conversation at the table other than discussing the amazing flavours we were experiencing. Instead of an endless menu trying to appeal to every possible taste, O Abel has a short menu, ensuring that whatever choice you make, you will not be disappointed. We had the steak, chicken and lamb cutlets. All of these dishes were superbly cooked and were accompanied by amazing salads, fries and baby potatoes. The service was second to none and the value incredible. Truly a memorable experience.

We looked forward to visiting Solar Bragancano because of its reputation, only to be frustrated by an unexpected closure for two of the nights we spent in Braganca. Thankfully the doors were open for our last night, a Friday, so we climbed the stairs to encounter a memorable ambience - a beautiful dining room, a bar cluttered with wine bottles standing on the floor and a shelf full of stacked magazines (heaven knows what happens if you pull one from the bottom) and an intimate terrace area at the back near the kitchen.The table settings are traditional and tasteful, the candles sit in elegant candlesticks or candleabra, it's a truly unique setting. But...On the night we visited, service was on the slow side and mainly fell on one long-suffering waitress while a more mature gent in a blazer wandered here and there with no great sense of urgency.A partridge starter seemed interesting - the listing for 'cheese and banana' seemed just weird and I wish I'd ordered it just to see what it was - but what turned up on the plate was uninspiring, bland meat on bits of bread with some salad accompaniment including some rather nice beetroot.My first two choices from the game section of a very lengthy menu - something that always rings a vague alarm bell with me - weren't available so I tried the venison, which proved to be a brown clump of shredded and overcooked meat served with lukewarm vegetables (why is a hot plate such a mystery in so many restaurants?) and another helping of that aforementioned beetroot.Across the table the sole had been subjected to serious overcooking - the worst bit of fish served up in nearly three weeks eating out in northern Portugal, and by some distance - and came with soggy turnip greens and cabbage.There's a good wine list - most of the cellar seems to be arranged around the premises, to be honest - with lots of local choice.I rarely resort to a 'poor' rating but we had three plates of food in what's supposed to be the best place in town, and none of them met that standard or anywhere near. I'll charitably conclude that the problems which forced them to close for the previous two nights still hadn't been fully sorted out, but if you're open for business you have to be on your game.It seems that the boss posts a (sometimes lengthy) response to any review which is towards the bottom end of the scale, and there are a fair few - perhaps he or she could make better use of that time in rethinking the length of the menu, sharpening up the service and making sure that the food is fit for purpose (and hot). Deciding to eat out at a buffet joint was the furthest thing from our mind when we arrived in Braganca, but we chanced by this place while strolling one evening and it looked as if the locals had decided to vote with their feet and that's usually enough of a recommendation for us.It's a spick and span set up which has obviously not been operating for too long, but the offer is familiar - a flat fee and you can tuck in to as much as you like. That flat fee was 12.99 euro, with drinks extra - phenomenal.There's plenty of choice in terms of meats and fish, a surprising variety of veg - there were sprouts in there somewhere, and we didn't seem them anywhere else in Portugal - and while there were some understandable varieties in temperature the team were brisk and efficient in keeping everything topped up and clearing away dirty plates.There's a simple and cheap wine list and a generous dessert buffet spread including ice cream.It's a winner with the locals and while it wouldn't usually appeal to us we had a good time just seeing what everyone else was eating and how many times they went back for more.
