August 29, 2020 Venice Greaves

Reviews on Mediterranean food in Montpellier, Occitanie, France. Getting sick on vacation is a major drag, but if you have to be under the weather, Montpellier is an ideal place to do it. People have studied medicine here for centuries—the Moors established medical schools in the 9th century, and the Université Montpellier’s school of medicine was founded in 1220. Once the local docs give you a clean bill of health, explore the cathedral, mansions and opera house.

As visitors discover, Montpellier has a huge range of restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, pizza parlours, creperies, curry houses - you name it. This one is genuinely special. It's a small place north of the Hotel de Ville with a couple of tables outside and a couple inside. The team comprises the chef in his open-plan kitchen and the lady who runs front-of-house who is genuinely charming. We kicked off with a bottle of Puech-Haut St Drezy, a local top-grade cuvee, for 30 euros ( a steal) which was bright violet in the glass, tight, rich and austere all at the same time. It reminded me of a Pomerol, driven by fruit and bright colour. What a bargain for the price. I then had lamb chops - sweet, rich and fragrant with rosemary from the hills nearby and accompanied by a pleasant ratatouille crusted with a farinaceous crumble. My wife ordered the monkfish - a beefy big sirloin of no-nonsense monkfish atop a timballe of unctuous risotto with a rich chorizo broth around the side. A really compelling combo. This sort of cooking is why you come to France to enjoy. The price was ridiculously low, best wine, coffees and calvados included. I am a very picky and critical person when it come to spending the hard-earned in restaurants and this place deserved every euro,

I was in Montpellier last week and I decided to go to this restaurant since it was close to my hotel. My opinion is positive. I really liked the food; I basically ordered only fish and seafood. The amount of food was quite copious and the staff really kind. The spot is very good since it is in the new neighbourhood ANTIGONE. The restaurant is surrounded by other restaurants, pubs, etc. so you can spend the after dinner in the same place. Outside you can sit in front of the river. I had twice dinner in this place and I really enjoyed my time.

When you enter everything you see is smart, modern, restrained and precise, with touches of real originality. And rather delightfully, exactly the same can be said of the cooking. I absolutely loved every aspect of this lunch. The service is perfect… friendly, relaxed but observantly attentive, imaginative, immensely informative. In fact the young waitress and waiter would both be strong contenders for my private “server of the year award”.The no choice approach to the surprise menus is great. I love having the decisions taken away from me. It can be 2, 3 or 4 courses, as you wish and we took just starter and main. The starter was probably the best tomato-centred dish I have ever eaten. It looked like nothing much more than a slice of giant tomato on a pastry base with a few herbs and flowers on top, but is was so much more than that, simply bursting with intense, complex and surprising flavours. The chicken main was one degree less remarkable, but extraordinarily well thought through and executed. That was already good value for 25 Euros but there were two waves of amuse-bouches beforehand. I asked for one glass of white that would work with both surprises and they served a very classy Cuvee “IN” from Mas Conscience for a mere 7 Euros. Then a 3 Euro coffee came with a wonderful plump hot madeleine – so much better than all the fiddly mini lemon tarts etc that so often appear at this stage as an excuse to bump up the coffee charge to something more aggressive. So yes, I’m struggling to find even the tiniest criticism…. Not a predicament I’m accustomed to!... Indeed, if Pastis were close to my home, I could cheerfully eat here twice a week!!

I arrived to this busy little restaurant tonight (Sunday Evening) with four of my friends. We had come across this pizzeria though trip advisor and we were delighted with the first impressions! It seems to be a family run pizzeria, with an open kitchen so you can watch your pizza being made right in front of you! The service we received was one of the best we have experienced yet in Montpellier. All the servers could not do enough for us! (This included complimentary deserts and one of the servers running to the shop to get the cans of Coke Zero we ordered!) The pizza was delicious, and very generously proportioned. Very reasonable and a huge selection on the menu. The chef also made some very good suggestions for us based on the menu also. Overall a very enjoyable evening, delicious food and fantastic service. Would highly recommend and we will most certainly be returning!!!

Slightly late on a Sunday night scouting around for food and getting cranky with hunger we happened upon Atelier St. Roch and were rewarded with lovely service and some dishes that lodge happily in the memory weeks later. Particularly good were the baked Hake dish and the Fig Tart with honey and Thyme. Don't hesitate.

Great Moroccan restaurant,Good quality food ,Warm welcome Average ambiance Good prices The only issue is that the opening times are limited especially at night Thank you very much for your comments. I understand for the opening times ,but we had to make a choice, in the morning i start around 7.30 am 8am to do the bread , than to do the dessert ,etc and in winter times as it's very busy i have only about 1/2 hour break until closure time so if we're opening late , it will be difficult for me to carry on .But in summer time it's not that busy, so maybe you're right , we've got to think about it.But thank you again .
