Every time we visit Obuse, which is often, we stop by Masuichi Brewery. First of all the sake is excellent!, Secondly the atmosphere is delightful. Thirdly, there is a tasting room, which charges for sample to keep the tour groups out. And, the service is prompt, friendly and informative. A great place to sample, purchase and take photos. Be sure to check out the brewery's garden.

Stopped in Obuse on our way to Jigokudani monkey spa (separate reviews). Had lunch at The Club, an atmospheric trendy restaurant with open kitchen. We ordered food from their set menu (tempura, grilled beef) with sake which were of decent quality and tasty justifying the not cheap price. Service was quick and friendly. This restaurant may be owned by Masuichi sake brewery right next door which we visited after (Jan. years back).

We were looking for chestnut on rice and came across Sakurai restaurant. The restaurant is typical Japanese, large dining area and tables set not too near one another. There is a beautiful small garden that we only briefly glimpsed as we came here in late evening. Good food and good ambience, a nice ending to a long day.

Recommended by a Japanese friend, I stop by mid afternoon for desserts. Known for its chestnut creations (both savoury lunch and desserts), I went for the dessert.Zenzai is a traditional Japanese dessert I picked, with chestnut ingredients. It's a thick sweet soup consists of chestnut paste served with mochi (rice cake). Very good pairing with the tea, and some pickles. Sat by the window, with view of the blue sky and distant mountain. Great ambiance too!
