Maria is a sweet lady, but her restaurant is most definitely not worthy of the 5-star unbelievably positive reviews, most of which I suspect come from her hostel tenants.Rated in the top 3% of 4,620 Lisbon restaurants is just unrealistic...this place is not better than 97% of the other dining options in this terrific food city. I just don't get it...It took 15 minutes to get a drink order, the wine came out of a box in the fridge, all our courses arrived at once, and it was pleasant peasant food at best.Hey, I'm not a 'foodie', I love great tasting well prepared 'ordinary' meals, but I believe personal sentimentality for the owner's 'story' overrides an honest appraisal of the product. And Marie, where's the wonderful soup you suggested? It never got to the table. No problem, the uncomfortable stools did not entice us to stay longer. We can no longer rely on TripAdvisor reviews...it feels like most are from friends and family or besotted late nite revelers without taste buds. ObrigadaMaria do Carmo

We visited Clube de Journalistas three years ago and decided to go back with some trepidation - we have frequently been disappointed when revisiting restaurants and hotels. Fortunately, we weren't disappointed; Clube de Journalistas was every bit as good as we remembered. The food is excellent and the service efficient and friendly. If the weather is good (and it nearly always is in Lisbon), the sunken garden is a lovely place to have dinner, with a calm and relaxed atmosphere. It was a bit quieter than we remember, it deserves to be full every night. We would thoroughly recommend Clube de Journalistas if you are looking for slightly special occasion that won't break the bank,

Sure, the burgers without the bread were amazing. I had the Gorgonzola burger and lapped it up. Both homemade sauces, a sweetish tomato salsa instead of ketchup and souped up mayonnaise, were very welcome and tasty. Sure, the prices were affordable. Sure, the service was swift and friendly. But what made this place wonderful was the pervasive feeling of fun...the sense that the staff was happy to be there. And so were we. These are the intangible assets of a place.Lots of good food in Lisbon. But ambience makes this place shine.

We ended up here on our final night in Lisbon and wish we had found it earlier. It's located in a cool area of Graca near the Alfama area of Lisbon. The restaurant is in an old flea market building on the second level with some nice windows that look out onto a square. The atmosphere within the restaurant is awesome with maybe 10 or 15 tables and a selection of old records being played while you dine. Decor is quite quaint and funky, but makes for a wonderful meal.We ordered the local bread with mushroom pate to start which was outrageously delicious. Then for our mains my wife had artichoke and mushroom pasta and I had the pork cheeks. They were both phenomenal, wonderful presentation and delightful flavours. We finished with the mushroom ice cream for dessert which was also quite tasty and very playful. All in all an excellent meal that you will not want to miss while in Lisbon. The servers are also wonderfully friendly. And for top level food we paid only bout $50 euros total. Well worth it.
