The hotel is the worst of Vila Gale group I ever experienced - and I have experienced a few. Poorly organised, the common areas are small and the staff is unable to manage it in a way that allows the guests to enjoy the space "equally". In my experience, I stayed for 3 days with my family and didn't once use the outdoor pools because the lounges were always occupied by other guests who "marked" them in the morning and stayed the entire day. The breakfast was so bad we only had it the first day - we preferred to leave the hotel and enjoy our breakfast outside for the rest of our stay. It's so bad it's almost ridiculous - plates with 2 slices of flamengo cheese and 2 slices of ham, butter, processed jams, and that's it. No other offers of any regional produce whatsoever. The coffee is watery and offered in those large "tanks", tasteless. No capuccino, no expresso, nothing. Scrambled eggs are horrible. Fruit is pre-sliced and offered in micro-doses in what looks like a doll portion, and was basically oranges. We tried the buffet dinner when we arrived and that was unreal - all the food was almost cold, no flavour, no quality at all, rubbery textures. We even wondered what was the purpose of having again micro-servings of chorizo, 2 slices per cup (!), which weren't even cooked. Only positive note is the bed, which was quite nice. When we left we were asked if all was OK, we replied "No", but they didn't really care to know why. Seriously, stay away if you can. Worst hotel I've been in for years, and it's not even cheap.

FABULOUS!

What did I like? I liked everything about Herdade da Diabrória. Let's do it by steps. The room is large, well decorated, well soundproofed and fresh. (with 40C outside, I turned on the air conditioning once). The beds are very comfortable, as are the pillows. The bathroom is perfectly adequate and functional. Breakfast is good, varied and fresh. It is worth mentioning the carrot cake and the pumpkin compote, which are delicious! The staff is ALL fabulous! Extremely helpful, friendly, welcoming and in a good mood. On one of the days, at lunch/snack I ordered a Diabrória Salad with changes (because I'm lactose intolerant) and it came perfect and was wonderful. The pool is big enough, perfectly adequate and functional. The scenery around the pool is fabulous. You can hear the ducks, birds, turtledoves and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty scenery. It is a perfect place to rest and unwind. All anti-Covid rules are strictly adhered to. Definitely a place to come back to and even explore in winter too.

Liked · Super friendly receptionist at checkin. Indicated a restaurant and even tried to book it for us right on the checkin and upgraded to a double bed room. Big room with balcony (good view). Free parking spaces outside. Disliked · A bit dated, needs improvment, although there's a new area with padel courts. The breakfast products looked like from packaging (excepting croissants and bread)

A pretty pleasant part of Portugal

Reviewed By sadeeyor

Beja, under-the-radar capital of the biggest district in Portugal, is an easy-going, friendly-feeling, unpretentious, gently attractive small city that feels more like a big village. Well worth a stop-over, especially if day-tripping to Baixo Alentejan delights such as Mertola. Problem: a Dearth of accommodation. Fortunately, this amiable few-frills youth hostel bridges that chasm. Without it, the simple overnighting Bejan charms would be lost to the outsider. Particularly handy for the bus station, and the old town's an easy stroll away. A pretty pleasant part of Portugal.

Lots to do in terms of customer care

Reviewed By mariavlachoupt

Lovely setting, beautiful lovely architecture and decoration. Two unexpected setbacks once we arrived: no dinner service (we would have to go to the town of Beja, but didn't really want to) and no internet in the room (contrary to what was publicised). The staff were helpful, but really lacking customer care training; and the overall satisfaction depends a lot on details... - We asked for towels for the pool and were told tgat they normally don't provide them (but did give us). - We asked for proper coffee, as what they provided for breakfast was cereal "coffee". We were told that that's what they offer (but did provide us with proper coffee). - Just before leaving, we realised that the toilet brush was very dirry from previous occupants. Truly bad surprise, especially during a pandemic, when one expects rooms to be very well cleaned. We informed tge staff, who thanked us and said they would throw the brush away. No apologies made.

NOT IN BEJA

Reviewed By Kay B

First and foremost this hotel is not in Beja although it comes up on Tripadvisor as number one in the "best value" hotels in Beja. It's actually about 60 kms away and is not even in the Beja district. Tripadvisor needs to address this. The hotel is quite remote, in a small village and next to a beautiful lake with a man made sandy beach. It was a convent, converted 20 years ago and I don't think any work has been done since. It is in dire need of refurbishment. Everything is a bit "tired". The minimal staff were friendly and helpful, especially the lovely lady serving breakfast. Our room was large with two single beds with quite hard mattresses. The bathroom was large but with a bath and a shower over the bath which would not be suitable for someone with mobility problems. Lots of toiletries though, not in plastic bottles either! Breakfast was OK and plentiful. Parking was easy. The pool area was quite dated, the sun beds very uncomfortable and the pool liner needs replacing or cleaning. I found it quite expensive and would not recommend it, especially as it's not in Beja! Oh, and by the way, our room had a flat screen TV.

Excellent hospitality

Reviewed By M7557QYchristopherl

We were desperate for some sun and to get away from the UK after six months of C19 restrictions. This was the perfect break: a quiet compound set in the hills near Tavira but only 15-20 minutes’ drive to the beaches. Besides the silence and beauty what really stood out was the warmth of the staff. If you choose to dine in for supper (you need to arrange it in the morning) you won’t be disappointed.
