The town that gave the country (and port wine) its very name, Porto is Portugal’s second-largest metropolis after Lisbon. Sometimes called Oporto, it's an age-old city that has one foot firmly in the industrial present. The old town, centered at Ribeira, was built on the hills overlooking the Douro River, and today is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The 14th-century São Francisco church is a main attraction, as are the local port wine cellars, mostly located across the river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

The second we stepped in the door we were impressed with the fantastic service - the owner ran up the street to return a diner’s forgotten umbrella, then seated us without a reservation, no problem! After the wonderful dishes and genuine, caring and knowledgeable service, we were so impressed and hope to come back in a few nights. Get the house salad, the veal with pepper cream sauce, and carbonara - highly recommend. Can’t decide which was better: the food or the service!

If you want a foodie treat in Porto, you must get to Travesso. You have to have a reservation, since the place is packed most of the time. We celebrated an anniversary there, and had a wonderful shared table in the downstairs area. Our hostess was also our waitress, and she was terrific. She was very attentive, but left us to our own devices as necessary. The recommended winds were both outstanding, only exceeded by the delicious entrées. We had the octopus which was probably the best anyone had ever eaten. It was tender and tasty. We also had the video and the ribeye steak. Suffice it to say, my husband chewed on that bone until there was nothing left.Travesso is walking distance from the train station, and in a lovely neighborhood. No need to worry about anything but enjoying your meal here. Do not miss this place.Thank you so much for visiting us and for sharing your experience. We're so glad you had a good time with us! :)

Wandered in at random without a reservation, and were completely blown away by the fantastic food and terrific service. The menu is small plates, meant to be combined & shared; very thoughtful and delicious reimaginings of traditional Portuguese dishes. It was so good, we returned with a friend and were able to verify that it wasn't a fluke! My suggestion is that if you have any questions on food or wine, let Leandro decide - especially the wine, he'll pick the best possible selection for your dinner. We look forward to returning on future visits to Porto, and wish them all the best!Thank you Phil G, we hope see you soon.

After reading all of the great reviews for this restaurant, we were eagerly anticipating an excellent meal. Both of us were very disappointed with our food however, as we found that our dishes were very salty and oily. The portions were quite large , but we found the taste to be ordinary. I must say that the owner was very friendly, but despite this, we would not go back.

This breakfast and lunch restaurant is truly wonderful. Beautiful home cooked exquisitely flavoured food. It was absolutely sensational. We had a fabulous lunch here. The attentive, friendly and welcoming owner explained each item on the menu. It was then cooked by his wife using her wonderful recipes. Delicious and succulent. we only wish we had found it at the start of our trip. Highly recommend the Petiscos which are served with salad. We added a side of fries, fresh orange juice (which was presented like a beautiful cocktail) and a delicious glass of wine. At peak times for lunch - after 1:30 - there could be a bit of a wait as the place is popular and the host is attentive to each guest. it is absolutely worth it though! We will remember this meal as a highlight of our trip to Porto.

So good that we are here a number of times in a 5 day break in Porto. The food was absolutely outstanding - fresh, tasty and huge portions. You won’t need lunch. The service was great really friendly but also dead honest. Our waitress told us not to order more toast based on the size of the portions which was really customer focused. The other thing that will surprise UK and US customers is that the space could have had at least in another 5 or 6 tables crammed in to maximise profit but this would have compromised what is a lovely light and airy space. Do Norte is busy so unless you come really early you can expect a small wait but trust me it is absolutely worth it
