Wonderful little estaminet with Flemish fare and local beer, brewery less than a 100 yards away. I had the carbonnade and it was absolutely delicious, one of the best I have had. My wife had the beef. It was gristly and undercooked. Make sure to order well done if you want medium.

Centrally-located Kerelshof is one of two traditional Flemish estaminets in Cassel. It has a short menu, but everything is well-prepared, with fresh ingredients, and delicious. And there's a list of at least 80 beers and ales from France and Belgium to ch

The Kerelshof [The Rebels' Inn], in the heart of Cassel, is one of two typical Flemish estaminets in Cassel, the other being T'Kasteelhof. The entire menu is written on a slateboard and the list of the more than 80 beers and ales fills a multi-page booklet.Among the Flemish specialities are Carbonade, a beef stew described by a Fleming as "Boeuf Bourguignon made with beer instead of red wine;" Pot je vleesch, portions of various pottted meats served chilled; and Tarte au Maroilles, made with the local cheese.I had a small Tarte au Maroilles as a starter, Carbonade as the main course and Crêpes Cassonade for dessert.I accompanied my meal with a glass of Hop Hop Hop, an excellent double India Pale Ale brewed in nearby Esquelbecq, followed by an Agent Provacateur, another heavily hopped ale brewed by Craig Allen, a Scotsman transplanted into Northern France. The dessert crêpes were accompanied by two bowls of cassonade, a type of brown sugar popular in Northern France produced from sugar beets.

My friend and I stopped here for lunch when passing through. We sat in the sun and enjoyed a cold beer and a Welsch Complete which was a cheese and ham dish. Very tasty. We called back a couple of nights later but they weren't doing meals, just snacks. He did recommend the next restaurant along, where we sat for nearly 20 mins before the chef decided to stop chatting to his friends and acknowledge us.A lady eventually gave us a menu but did not ask for a drink order and when the chef came 2 seconds later and swore because we hadn't had time to read the menu, let alone decide,we left.

La table du meunier

Reviewed By welltravelledgirl

We recently visited this restaurant whilst staying overnight at a B&B in Zagerscappel (see separate review). We were apprehensive on entering, due to our limited French vocabulary, being English. We needn’t have worried, as all the staff, including the proprietor/Chef made us feel so welcome, and despite a few language difficulties (and the offer of a translated menu), we were able to choose some delicious meals! The restaurant is located on a terrace above the Grand Place, and on a nice day, would be an ideal position to watch the world go by. Sadly it was raining during our visit, but you could still enjoy the beauty of this little French town. Merci Beaucoup!

This is a very charming restaurant where the ambient is more than a place for eat, i'ts in fact a place to live the typical regional life, where the staff handshake everyone coming inside and they are smiling all night even if they are hard working. So friendly. When we have finished our epic diner, they put on our table some regional wood games and told us how to play with to finish the evening with a little table party. The price is more than reasonable and I can understand why even booking a day in advance still difficult to find a table in this restaurant.

Le Foch

I am a repeat customer with Le Foch who found the restaurant by chance. I have since started to use Trip Advisor and wanted to share my experience. My current trip finds me again at Le Foch. The food is constantly of great quality and prepared perfectly. The service and atmosphere is that of excellence. The owners take pride in their product and it shows in every detail. Yesterday I enjoyed a wonderful ham and mushroom quiche for the starter; duck breast (make sure to try it 'pink') in pepper sauce with the perfect quantity of vegetables and mashed potatoes; dessert was a pastry 'bag' of cooked apples in a caramel sauce. Excellent, excellent dinner. Tonight was not to be outdone. The starter was two sausage pieces in a pastry crust; the main course was a white fish with sauce - but the wonderful addition was the sautéed mushrooms, complete with proper portions of vegetables; dessert finished the delightful meal which consisted of two warm pineapple rings, vanilla ice cream, and a type of caramel sauce. Simple devine!I would recommend this restaurant to everyone! Excellent experience at an incredibly affordable price!Make sure to include Le Foch in any travel to the Cassel area.

Estaminet'T Kasteel Hof

One of more famous estaminet flamand in a wonderful vue in the hightest point of Flanders with local specialities

This is a really characterful restaurant, specialising in local Flanders cuisine. It's easy to find; just head towards the windmill out of the town square. Being near the top of the hill gives you a good view over the small town. The character hits you as soon as you come in, with the smoke of the log-burning fire, and every inch of space, from floor to ceiling, filled with decoration or knick-knacks of some sort. The menu is fun to choose from. You could if you wanted to, have a dish made with beer for a starter, main course or pudding. Rhubarb and chicory appear frequently on the menu, as does speculoos. Tartlets are a speciality. There is also a small shop on the premises selling Flanders delicacies. Sadly, as with many other good restaurants, this is not one where you are likely to get much of your "Five a Day". But we would definitely go again.

FENETRE SUR COUR

Reviewed By FrenchyEric

A very pleasant experience: the upper dining room is bright, well decorated and welcoming (an outside sitting area, the "cour", is also available if the weather allows), the service attentive and professional, the food remarkably good, the menu appealling, the wine list extensive but nevertheless offering lower priced wines. We spent approx. 50 Euros per person which, for a first class meal, is quite reasonable.
