That this beautiful, serene resort even exists where it does requires the weary traveler to suspend disbelief, because it doesn’t quite seem possible. Here, at the end of an all day drive on some of Madagascar’s most brutal (but fascinating) tracks, is Laguna Blu, perched on a bluff overlooking the sea. And you’ll probably arrive late in the day, maybe even at sunset as I did, which makes the arrival even more magical. A scattering of bungalows looking out to the sea, a lonesome beach that will pretty much be yours alone, nights lit with an impossible amount of stars... Laguna Blu will leave a lasting impression on you. The beach, at low tide, is so interesting. Plenty of white sand, but also a reef that extends far, far out into the Mozambique Channel. It’s fun to explore, but step lightly, and be aware that everything around you is very much alive. Allow some time to visit the nearby Vezo village of Andavadoaka. The people will be just as curious about you as you are about them. And last but not least, make sure you pay a visit to the local grove of Baobabs, some 20 minutes away. In my opinion, the most spectacular group of Baobabs in Madagascar, even more astonishing than those at the Avenue of the Baobabs outside of Morondava. They are totally surreal! Laguna Blu was by far my favorite lodging in Madagascar, and one of the most beautiful places I have stayed, period. I think you just have to go and see for yourself.

Reasonable rooms with lovely outside space but can be noisy and crowded

Reviewed By Tipishca

My first reaction on arriving at Villa Maroloko was of panic. We went to the restaurant/bar area on arrival and it was absolutely heaving with travellers and locals alike - noisy and full. So different to the quieter, less populated lodgings we had experienced during our travels and which we prefer. We also couldn't help noticing that it seemed to attract several 'wealthy' looking older french men with young local girls on their arms which, I'm sorry, did give it a sleazy feel. And it seems a local guide, that we had been allocated for our 2 nights stay, took umbrage when we didn't want to pre-book any activities - partly because there was nowhere to lock valuables - such as cameras, passports away in our room. As soon as you near the beach or venture onto it, locals will approach you to sell goods, massages etc. I understand why this happens but, for us, it meant staying away from the beach was the easiest option. Thankfully, when we went for our meal - which was very good - in the evening there was only one other table taken. A few more the next night. There were more people around in the day but nothing like as crowded as the busy Sunday afternoon when we first arrived. Breakfast was very basic, especially as no eggs one morning and the sullen waitress didn't help the experience. Our room was spacious and clean enough but I had to turn a blind eye to the state of the louvred window in the bathroom. Noise does travel between rooms, we had a girl with a young crying baby next door. The separated seating/patio areas outside the rooms is very nice as are the grounds away from the restaurant/bar. So, make of my review what you will. Perhaps not our cup of tea but will appeal to others.

Well! Kirindy forest is the reserve to see the fosa. They have only a dormitory and some bungalows. That makes the Relais de Kirindy a good option if you need a better accommodation. It is not recommended to arrange the midnight-walk to see the jumping rats if you stay there!

Beware!

Reviewed By Pioneer109739

This is a lovely Lodge but I want to warn people that if you stay here please make sure that all your possessions are locked in your suitcases. I stayed here at the end of September 2019 with a group of friends and while we were at the pool someone entered our locked room and stole my iPad and a small camera. There was no sign of a break in, someone entered with a key. I was extremely upset about this and reported it to the man at the front desk. He was suspiciously unhelpful and told us that the hotel only had one key for each room which doesn't make sense. It saddens me to give this Lodge such a poor rating as it really was a very special place but my experience there wasn't one I will remember fondly.

Having done my 3rd trip to Mada Surf Lodge it just gets better. The owners of the lodge Blair & Ben are great hosts with years of local knowledge of this area and its surrounds. The bungalows are comfortable and cleaned daily on your request. The staff are friendly and give off a good vibe. If you cant speak Malagache or French its no problem they will eventually work out your enquiry with a warm smile. Clinets must remember its not a 5 Star Resort but comfortable clean and a good vibe throughout. Value for your money and great food on offer. Your virtually living on the seashore with the sound of waves lapping the shoreline as you fade into a deep realaxing sleep. Sunsets are amazing best I've seen anywhere in the Indian Ocean. And for any surfers going there you will enjoy the experience of some hot waves. Always remember you are not the only Guests there have patience respect the staff and dont miss the Happy Hour from 1700hrs until 1800hr smash a Cocktail or a Local Beer on sunset.

Don't go there! Very overpriced!

Reviewed By Jetty H

We paid €100,- in advance because we booked already when we where in Holland. I wish we never did that. It was way to much money for what they give you. A bungalow with 4 seperated beds (we only needed 1 bed) with hard matresses and dirty sheets. There was only salty cold water. Later they brought us buckets with hot water, but we allready took a shower. Nobody told us. The french owner looks very friendly, but she doesn't speak any english. It was very hard to communicate with her. Afterwards she deens not to be that friendly. She doesn't want the drivers to stay there and she don't offer them lunch, breakfast or dinner. Normally they all do for the drivers! Without drivers no customers!! Especially for this place because it's not possible to get there without a 4x4 car. Our driver was too polite to tell us this, but we discovered later by other people. If I knew this I would never stay there. They ask so much money, way out of proportion and there is nothing for the driver?!! The food was ok, but we told her on arrival that we where sick: foodpoising. She didn't ask anything about dinner and gave us raw fish and shrimps. We couldn't eat this, but offcourse she charged us for the lunch and dinner (extra above the €100,- we allready paided). I never wrote a negative review before, but this is absolutely not worth that much money!
