River oasis

This was one of our favorite hotels during a month-long tour of Portugal. We paid extra for a River view and were glad we did. The room was small but had a balcony where we could sit with a glass of wine and watch the swallows in the evening. It is simple and sleek, and everything works. It is also worth paying the supplement for the excellent breakfast buffet. Many biking tour groups stay here but the excellent management sees to everyone’s needs and we could all coexist harmoniously. The staff are very helpful with restaurant recommendations. Mértola is lovely and we were glad we liked the hotel enough to stay another night.

Quinta do Vau is a gem

Quinta do Vau is a nice B&B located at the left bank of the Guadiana River in Mértola. The B&B offers 15 rooms, some with kitchenette. The B&B has a small pool with deck chairs, a lounge with breakfast facility and a large terrace with view of the river on top of the second building. Staffs are friendly. We had room 11 with a view of the river. The tastefully furnished & decorated 22m2 room had a balcony and private bathroom. The room had a kingsize bed with a average mattress & hard pillows, table & chairs, air-conditioning, club-chair, and a well outfitted kitchenette with coffee-machine, fridge, magnetron, stove top, sink, and all utensils you need. The sunny balcony had with 2 comfy chairs and small table & 2 chairs. The separate bathroom had washbasin, spacious shower and toilet. All was impeccably clean. The next day we moved to room 15. Again a 22m2 room with the same outfitting. Instead of a shower this room had a bath-for-2 with view of the river. Free Wi-Fi & parking. A very good breakfast is served with a nice variety: eggs made to order, ham & cheese, bread, yoghurt, freshly pressed orange juice, fruit & preserves, pastries, tea & coffee. We found Quinta do Vau very pleasant & comfortable, and we had a nice stay. Highly recommended.

Good value for money

We received a warm welcome on arrival at the hotel. Receptionist spoke English and offered us drinks which was lovely with the bar overlooking the river. The pool was open which was ideal because we had found many hotel pools closed in April. The pool wasn't heated but was warm enough being sited in the sun. Room wasn't big but had a lovely view of the river and a balcony to sit on. Breakfast was good.

Monta da Eirinha is a nice place in the country side about 18 km outside of Mertola, which is the next place to have dinner. It's a quiet place with a nice pool. The rooms are rather small but very clean with air-conditioning. Very reasonable prices. The only concern for us: Breakfast started at 9 am (al least on a Sunday) and we had to leave earlier for Faro airport. The lady, who gave us the keys to our room didn*t speak one word of English. And you better should get into contact with them in advance , if you should arrive later than 6pm

Disappointing B+ B with a lot of history

Reviewed By Jeff B

We had specifically wanted to come to Mertola to see the village and the views. We picked this B+B because of the reviews we had read here and Booking.com. Suffice it to say we were somewhat disappointed for three reasons: 1) We were not warned that the direct road to the B+B was closed permanently and we would have to either walk our bags up from the car park at the foot of the village or try to navigate a series of hair raising turns to get to the B+B. We did the drive but were told we could not park there and had to drive down to the car park and walk back. When we arrived even though we had confirmed our arrival time the host was not there and we had to call him 2) The room we got was basic but the bed was like something out of convent - a very small double with cushy springs. There was no door to the bathroom! In fairness after complaining to the host we were given a lot nicer room that has a door to the bathroom and and more comfortable bed. However when we used the bath tub and drained it some water came up the floor. 3) Breakfast -we were told our rate included breakfast but the host said they only served in the summer and instead gave us a chit for a breakfast as the cafe in town. Mertola does have a lot to see but it all could be done in an afternoon. Our other challenge was finding somewhere to eat dinner as a lot of places that were supposedly open according to Google were either not open at all or did not start until 8 pm which was too late for us.

Amazing hosts in such a nice and quiet place to stay

Such a nice quiet place! Having only three rooms makes this small accommodation a very pleasant place to relax - we were the only ones in that night, so, no kids jumping into the swimming pool. The room was nice and the outside spaces were really pleasant, with a good terrace and a very good and beautiful swimming pool. The breakfast was really good. The hosts are amazingly friendly, which makes a real difference on turning your stay into a pleasant stay.

Great location, naturalist host

Our room was filled with natural light and lovely views of the river (not to mention the goats across the way with tinkling bells and all the birds). Our hosts made available to us birding books, walked us to Islamic museum to make sure we found it and generally introduced to a very lovely area. We originally headed here on a lark and found a community with a lot of history, natural beauty and quiet.

Choose a room with balcony

Reviewed By Arini16

I spent in January one week in this guest house and I was almost very satisfied. The only thing a bit disturbing was the cold(ish) room, even thoug there was a heater with max power on. But otherwise the room with good bed, toilet, kitchenette and large flat TV with a lot of channels to choose and especially the balcony was excellent. Just below the balcony runs the Guaniana river and you have really nice views to the river and the banks on the other side were lambs walk and eat. What a nice way to start your day by sitting on the balcony looking at the Eurasian crag martins flying around and especially sitting on the TV-antenna and window's cover walls, there could be around 50 birds on the same time. Water in the room became hot in 5 seconds The bed's matress was really good and gave a good sleep. Be aware that there are steep narrow stairs to the room and no elevator. Cleaning was done daily,
