The best available hotels & places to stay near Madeira

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

After 2 years of trying to stay at Savoy due to covid restrictions we were booked to stay luckily during the flower festival week. The room was amazing, the staff were helpful and professional and the grounds and pool were fantastic. This is a beautiful hotel and well worth a visit if you are planning to stay in Funchal. Plenty of good local restaurants and a short walk into town for an even bigger choice.

AMAZING!!!

My husband and I have just returned from this hotel for 5 nights and it is superb. We arrived about 10pm and they had left refreshments and something to eat in our room which was welcomed after such a long day. Would recommend a room with sea view as the view as breathtaking. The hotel itself is immaculate and constantly being cleaned. All of the staff are so friendly. There is a short walk to the harbour with lovely restaurants and a supermarket nearby too. Local prices are really reasonable also so not expensive to eat/drink out. Thank you so much for such a wonderful stay. We are already looking to go back. If u want a relaxing stay this is the place to be.

From the position of the hotel situated in the old town to the quality of the rooms, the facilities, the food and the staff, I could not fault anything. We stayed at this hotel about 12 years ago and the quality is exactly as we remembered it - wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Thank you to everyone involved in making the quality of the hotel just perfect.

My fiancee and I have just hot back from a weeks stay at the Churchill Bay and we cannot speak highly enough of the hotel. From the location to the room and most importantly the staff, everything was just right. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so welcome and were able to relax straight away. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who even provided a complimentary bottle of champagne to celebrate our recent engagement. The room was clean & comfortable with a lovely shaded balcony and the restaurant was top. We'll definitely be back!

Not one for the vegetarians

Let's start with the good things: The room was nice (paid for a sea view), the bed was fine and we had no bother getting a sun bed, even when rocking up at 1030. I liked the clientel - mostly French, Portuguese, UK and German. A mix of age groups and not too many kids. Now for the rest..... Firstly, I agree - it is not 5 star standard. I'm always happy with all inclusive as I usually like local wine and beer - the alcohol at this hotel was not at all enjoyable. I did like how bottles of water were freely available however. I also agree that the staff are miserable, particularly at the front desk. There was one lady who was nice, others were rude and sarcastic. For anybody who suggests that the restaurant is suitable for vegeterian and vegan, I would ask how they figured this out? The food is not always labelled, and when it is it says something like "pasta" rather than the ingredients. There are no vegetarian or vegan signs and no idea what the ingredients are. For example "vegetable soup" - made with chicken stock perhaps? Once I went to have the "pasta with tomato" and found the main ingredient to be Tuna! The chickpea curry had shrimp in it too. Special meals can be reserved - we were allowed two. The "Aisan Night" was sold out upon our arrival so didn't get to try that. The pizza night we did book but it was so disappointing - a massive cheese fest which took an hour to arrive, with some weird black sawdust on the base. The dining hall is a nightmare. The tables are so close together and there is one small counter to get hot food, whilst salad and bread are separate. Masks are not required and the hand sanitiser was empty for 5 days of the 8 we stayed. People make their way in through a passage in the middle of the tables and are constantly gawping at what each other are eating whilst coughing. In the end we came only for breakfast (go early) and avoided all other meals. With that and the avoidance of the disgusting alcohol, there was not much point in being all inclusive. I won't be coming back to Madeira based on this one trip to this one hotel. I would advise anybody who's considering coming here to pack a mask for all communal areas, but mainly, if you have dietary requirements.... DON'T BOTHER.

Just Excellent!

Reviewed By karenoX3413LV

I am going to begin with just 2 tiny negatives - beds were quite hard (my opinion) and the breakfast coffee machine is dreadfully slow! Now the positives - the staff were all amazing, friendly and eager to assist. Joao in the restaurant was lovely. Talking of the restaurant, we never found ourselves short of something to eat. The breakfast selection was plentiful - cold meats, cheeses, breads, freshly cooked omelette, cereals, fruits and the good old bacon, sausage and eggs etc. Lunch and dinner were equally plentiful and was never repeated in our week there. The freshly carved legs of lamb on our last evening was to die for! Our room was spacious and clean, the bathroom was massive with the best and most powerful shower ever. Hand soap and shower gel were supplied. Mini fridge also in the room and bottles of still water supplied daily. We booked a side sea view room but we actually had a full sea view. The pool area was clean with plenty of sunbeds which people did not reserve which made finding somewhere to sit, at all times of the day, easy. The sunbed cushions were regularly sprayed with antibacterial spray. The gardens and grounds were beautifully kept and the spa and indoor pool were lovely. The courtesy bus made getting into and back from Funchal very easy and was prompt. This was our first visit to Madeira and staying here made our trip all the nicer. We would not hesitate to recommend a stay and we will most definitely be making a return visit. A huge thank-you to all - especially the entertainment staff who were so lovely and always stopped to have a chat without being pushy.

The staff are so friendly and helpful no request was to much.
