The best available Bed and Breakfast Inns to stay near Madeira

April 28, 2023 Harland Bartelt

Breezy Madeira is an eponymous island in the Madeira Islands, a Portuguese archipelago. The capital city of Funchal was settled in the 15th century and is a colorful collection of gardens, religious sites, and quirky tourist attractions like the thatched-roof Madeira Story Centre. Hike to the summit of Pico Ruivo and you’ll feel like you’ve climbed through the clouds. Unwind over a glass of Madeira wine, an historic fortified beverage that’s musky and subtly sweet.

Definitely NOT worth four stars

We visited this place expecting great things. Unfortunately the experience of staying here was very disappointing. Firstly, nearly all staff were grumpy and disinterested in guests. Staff in the restaurant at breakfast were miserable and clearly were not enjoying their jobs. No attempt was made by any member of staff to make polite conversation with guests . Even the reception staff were miserable. Our room was quite nice and a good size, however there was a lot of noise from other guests especially late at night and early in the morning ( Lots of door banging). Wi-Fi in our room was non-existent and even though we asked for it to be fixed, nothing was done. The quality of food in the restaurant (particularly at breakfast) was very poor. Choices were very limited and the same items were wheeled out every day. No variation was offered @nd the hot food was not hot, but barely warm. Some mornings it was actually cold. There was one small domestic coffee machine to service around 70 guests, so inevitably there was always a queue for coffee. This place also seems to cater more for Europeans and not uk guests, which is okay if you enjoy cold meat, cheese and salami for breakfast. Overall we would rate this place as 2 star, and definitely not 4 star. Don’t be misled by the flashy website . We have visited better 2 & 3 star hotels in Funchal.

Healthy eating

A fully booked lunchtime indicates the popularity of this eatery. Quirky decor, brilliant friendly service and superb food. Freshly prepared the healthy food and drinks will wow you, try all the different juices, watch them preparing them. Very reasonably priced, sadly not open in the evening. A triumph.

1905 Zino's Palace

This charming building is one of the few romantic buildings in Madeira and is therefore an important example of the archipelago's architectural heritage. The Palace and the attached chapel - Chapel of Santo Antonio, were built in the late 19th century with the purpose of being used as a summer home for the Zino family, taking advantage of the excellent climate of the area.

Amazing on all levels

I recently stayed here for three nights in the Suite with the Sea View and had an amazing time! I'm always looking for unique places to stay outside of the usual hotel experience, and this inn hit the marks and more. First off, all of the staff members were incredible throughout our stay. Especially, when we had a flight issue, and had to return back to the inn for another night -- it was no problem for them, and we even were allowed to return back to our same room like we never left. The location of the hotel is about 20 minutes to Funchal, but with a rental car (and free parking at the inn) that was no trouble for us. It actually is nice to not stay in the bustling city. The suite itself was beautiful and clean. We had an incredible view outside our large windows of the cliffs, waterfalls, and ocean below. We really enjoyed sitting outside watching the sunset on our attached balcony with two chairs and a table. We LOVED our meals at the inn as well -- I can't imagine a better view or atmosphere on the island to eat at! The views on the patio were incredible. The included breakfast was plenty, with pastries, bread, eggs to order, etc. We had dinner two nights at the hotel, which was also fantastic, with plenty of variety and very reasonably priced. But, the best part for us was the tea time! It was priced well for two people, and included a huge spread of desserts, breads, and sandwiches. I would definitely recommend at least doing it once during your stay. Overall, an incredible, classy, and beautiful inn. We can't wait to return someday soon!

Casa da Capelinha

Situated in the North Coast of Madeira Island, on the lower part with view to the mountain and to the sea. The ancient house now, completely remodelled, invites you for a compulsory stop and for a rest among the vineyards around. It is one of the most ancient Manor Houses from Ponta Delgada. In 1996 it was transformed into four apartments. The main house with 3 T-1 and T-0 (studio). On the ground floor we can find a T-0 and a T-1 with connecting doors being possible this way to accommodate a family. Having direct communication with a leisure area integrated into a small but lovely garden, a rustical wine press and a barbeque. The other two apartments on the main house are located on the upper part of the house and have a balcony, from where a breath taking view either to the mountain and to the sea can be enjoyed. In 2003 the owners decided to built 8 more T1 apartments, swimming pool for adults and for children, a small and very nice bar with esplanade and a bigger car parking

Stunning views, wonderful staff

Charming and spotless, this lovely hotel looks out at the ocean. Our apartment, with it’s full kitchen and living area had everything we needed for a fantastic stay. The rooms, though basic, were well furnished, and comfortable. Loads of storage space, and tons of light. Our small balcony overlooked the pool, and beyond that we could see the chapel, the cliffs, and the water. The view is magnificent! We took full advantage of the restaurant, and ended our days on the patio chatting with the other guests and enjoying really delicious food. The staff are absolutely lovely, and the owners are fantastic. They’re friendly, thoughtful, fun, and very willing to accommodate all the guests needs. We also took advantage of the pool (it was too pretty to pass up, even in April) and it was fabulous. The town was also very enjoyable. Small enough to walk, and large enough to provide all the essentials. Many hikes nearby, as well. We spent only a few days, but would have been happy to stay longer. Casa Capelinha makes a great home base for exploring, as well as a wonderful place to sit back and relax amidst the gorgeous scenery.

Villa Alto was the perfect choice for my work-cation. The staff is absolutely incredible. Your room is cleaned daily, the managers are extremely helpful, and you have a private chef. Between the sweeping mountain & ocean views and the community aspect of staying at the hotel, this booking is a no-brainer for you. There is no wifi in the rooms to encourage meeting your fellow guests. I am from the US and I met people from multiple different countries. The breakfast in the dining room is absolutely to die for. The wide selection of items is sure to please even the pickiest of eaters. In the summertime, you can enjoy a drink the pool. The sunsets here are also breath taking. I will be booking again!
