The best available Bed and Breakfast Inns to stay near Fatima

April 28, 2023 Venice Greaves

Lovely as it is, this little country town of less than 8,000 about 75 miles north of Lisbon wouldn’t be on the radar if it weren’t for its most famous citizens: the three shepherd children who, in 1917, saw monthly visions of the Virgin Mary in the Cova da Iria pasture. Today, the site is marked by the Basílica de Fátima, where pilgrims come on the 13th of every month to honor the Virgin and her young visionaries, especially in May and October, when the apparitions originally began and ended.

Loved my stay at Hotel Santa Isabel!

Reviewed By msea2015

I loved my stay at Hotel Santa Isabel! The staff (Emanuel, the owner, Ana Julia, Joao, and Ines) could not have been kinder. I had a perfect room (402) as I could see the church so beautifully lit up until 12:30 am every night. Everything worked perfectly in my room (which was a suite with a kitchenette), and my bed was so comfortable. The staff are in the hotel until 11 pm every night but the keycard system works perfectly. I was never concerned that I would be locked out. It is a perfect hotel if you want to be close the sanctuary, want to be able to prepare your own food, and want incredibly kind customer service. Thank you to everyone at Hotel Santa Isabel for making my stay such a special one. ps - You can easily walk to and from the bus station and into the town from the hotel.

Perfect location

Only around 50 metres from the East entrance to the sanctuary, the position couldn't be much better. I had a fourth floor room at the back of the hotel. It had a good view of the basilica, it was wonderful to have the window open and listen to the bells. These seemed to stop by the way at 10pm, and start again at 7am. Room was simple, with a flat screen tv. Not many channels, but I don't imagine anyone goes here to watch tv. Good hot water supply in the bathroom. Simple continental breakfast of bread, cheese, ham, jam, and coffee. I only stayed one night, but will be back. Next time, I don't imagine I will be looking for any alternatives to this hotel, and that says it all.

Excellent value for the low price we paid

Reviewed By FrequentTraveller3

Strange that the reviews are a couple of years old, with no new ones. Fortunately I decided to ignore the average and below average ratings on TripAdvisor or we would have missed this gem! For us there was only one 'con' and it is that the hotel is not easy to find, especially by car as our Garmin GPS did not seem to be able to find it. Detailed information on how to find the hotel would have been appreciated with our reservation confirmation. It had been a long drive and the Garmin just kept directing us round and around in circles due to the numerous one-ways and narrow lanes. It was not easy to tell which road the GPS wanted us to take due to roads over an underpass, small roads that we felt would not be open to vehicles and one-way systems that appear to change regularly. After about half an hour of futile driving around Fatima we parked up at the end of the one-way road that the hotel is located in; I walked up to the hotel to get directions on how to access it by car. Both the young receptionist and the lady in the hotel gift shop were very pleasant and helpful. The older lady even coming out onto the road with me to explain which road to take. The receptionist does speak English, the older lady (the receptionist said she was her boss) explained to me patiently in French. She also later obligingly took me on a tour of the hotel, showing me the restaurant, told me the opening hours of the restaurant, showed me the way into it from inside the hotel, showed me the bar on the ground floor etc. I have to say the path to the hotel was not easy to locate as it did not appear, to us, to be a road for vehicles. The location for visiting the Sanctuary at Fatima is ideal and was only a few minutes walk away from the hotel. The Reception area smells wonderful. We checked in fairly quickly and took the lift up to our room. The perfume in the elevator is also wonderful. The room size is adequate. We were only there for one night. The bathroom was clean and the shower was awesome. I loved the toiletries.. "Aromes de Portugal" I think is what it said on the toiletries. The bed was comfortable, so I do not know why the other reviewer had an issue with the bed. There is a TV in the room, however I do not think that any channels were in English. We were too tired to watch television in any case. We had dinner in the hotel's restaurant. They have a menu which is in English, if you don't speak Portuguese. Dinner was tasty and we found the wine very good. One CAUTION: At dinner the waiter put onto the table a selection of bread, cheese, olives and other things. Be aware that these things are chargeable even though they do not tell you in advance! This is all over Portugal, so be aware. In France, if you are severed a pre-dinner plate, it is complimentary... therefore, though we were surprised at the number of items, we assumed that was the case here too. We asked the waiter if this is normal to eat cheese BEFORE dinner, and were assured that this is normal in Portugal... no mention of the additional costs, even though we were obviously tourists who had no idea. Those un-requested extras put up our bill by 10 EUROS! BOTTOM LINE : We would stay there again if we visited Fatima again and would heartily recommend it to friends, with the caution to be aware of the hidden costs at dinner. Even my husband who usually wants a minimum of 4**s agreed that I had done well in choosing the Genesis Hotel.

Within minutes of arriving at Casa dos Tios, we felt as if we were with friends, no, actually family. The delightful, warm, gracious owners welcomed us as such. The B&B may be modest from the outside, but once inside you find a beautiful, immaculate, well-appointed home. We wanted for absolutely nothing, nor was there anything our hosts wouldn't do to make our stay wonderful. They even drove us to a restaurant they wanted us to try because they would not even think of letting us go by taxi! Add to this a bountiful, delicious breakfast. We did not want to leave!

This hotel was booked by the trip organiser and I was impressed. The room was spacious and very clean with a good sized bathroom with a bath and an overhead shower . The room also had a television and adequate wardrobe space. My room at the front of the hotel ,had a large patio and a beautiful view of the Basilca of Senora de Fatima. Although on the fourth floor there were lifts which is always welcome to me personally. The reception area had comfortable seats and a television for those who wanted to use it. The bar also in the reception area had wooden tables and chairs inside but there is also an outside area where you also could sit . .Prices of the bar tariff were very reasonable. The restaurant was pleasantly set out and very welcoming. The food was good and plentiful. The serving staff were courteous and obliging .
