The 9 best Resorts in Cascais, Portugal

April 28, 2023 Venice Greaves

A coastal town just 20 miles west of Lisbon, Cascais was once a small fishing village, but its idyllic scenery attracted the attention of artists, writers and expelled European nobility in the 20th century. Today, it still attracts high society, but all society comes in force to enjoy the gorgeous beaches and adventure options like sailing and surfing. The Conde de Castro Guimarães Museum, a former palace, is now open to the public and displays an impressive collection of art and artifacts.

I stayed for 2 nights for a conference at this hotel and it really has a 5 star experience and the view of the calm ocean is magnificent. The view from the elevators while moving is beautiful. The staff at the reception and the hotel door are very polite. The room was very spacious, clean and fresh. Food was of very good quality. Tea & coffee is complimentary but finding the kettle from under the cupboard and plugging it under the table is a little inconvenient.

Mixed experience

Reviewed By Margaret052

Don't book here if you are not a golfer. It's full of them, mainly in single-sex groups. They can be very greedy at breakfast, and quite pushy. On the plus side, they don't take up loungers by the pool all day! As 60/70's couple, we could list an awful lot of negative experiences (had so many now, we know what is important for us a clients), but that would be tedious. Paulo on the Reception was a gentleman, and extremely helpful. I can't say the same for the other reception staff, especially the little guy with glasses, who was quite rude when we arrived, after a sleepless night due to a very early start. Not his problem, of course, but he was adamant that we weren't getting in a room until 3pm, as per their T's and C's. He COULD have said that they would see how quickly a suitable room became available that morning. As we sat in reception and watched other arrivals getting the same treatment, we realised that he was probably numb with the situation and people's reaction. Needs a bit more interpersonal training. We arrived early due to plane changes (as per many people in May 22), so couldn't get in our junior suite room until 3pm. When we could, a couple of hours later, thanks to Paulo, we didn't like it, the bed was too small for us and the safe had been taken out. Paulo showed us a standard room, sea-side, with twin beds, so we changed to that, and received a refund against the room bill, which we used for drinks etc. The location is excellent, close to town and the Marina, where there are several restaurants. We liked Valerio best. There is no need to panic about pool loungers, because there are hardly any people there until after 4pm, when the golfers return. The golfer clientele surprised me. We had specifically NOT booked a hotel on a golf course, for exactly this reason. However, there ARE quite a lot of golf courses nearby, and it's relatively good value. The evening restaurant buffet is not that good, and if was really hard to get a drink. Everything menu-wise is on a QR code notice, but successfully downloading it is another matter. We wouldn't stay here again.

Basic, clean apartment at a reasonable price

Reviewed By leonardm687

We took a studio apartment and that suited us very well for a three night stay. It was a generous space with plenty of seating, a good size comfortable double bed, shower bathroom and medium size moderately equipped kitchen. A balcony with table and chairs led off the living area. There was air con and wifi. The apartment was clean on arrival and was also checked during the day. Wardrobe space was very generous. Given the poor weather throughout our stay we did not use the pool facilities or anything else in the immediate area other than the excellent baker and general store (just yards away). There is also a restaurant on site. There is easy parking, bike hire but no obvious disabled facilities (there may have been but I didn't see any). Reception staff were friendly and helpful and facilitated the printing of the required covid 19 forms etc. This was basic, clean accommodation at a reasonable price and we would be happy to stay there again.

Farol Hotel

Set on the absolute waterfront of Cascais’s dramatic Atlantic coastline, Farol Hotel reflects the unique charm of the township. Delightful old-world houses and cobbled streets frame a graceful bay on Portugal’s spectacular Estoril Coast to tell the story of a bygone era. The capital, Lisbon and the international airport are an easy 35-minute drive along excellent roads. A local train also runs between the city and Cascais. Lisbon is served by full service and budget airlines from all the major European hubs, which include Frankfurt, Paris, London and Zurich plus Stockholm, and Moscow. Arrive fuss-free and in style at Lisbon International Airport with a pre-arranged Farol Hotel limousine to meet you and transfer the short scenic trip to Cascais. As a proud member of prestigious Design Hotels, Farol Hotel is a wonderfully eclectic composition of adventurous architecture that embraces a remodeled 19th century private mansion that was once owned by the Count of Cabral, together with unique contemporary additions. The result is an inspire union of the old and the new. The Farol Hotel has a non-smoking policy in all its areas.

Really Nice Stay

Reviewed By f0urf0rfun

We had two ocean front rooms with balconies (213 and 214, I think). They were very nice and looked out onto the beautiful ocean and the surf breaking on the rocks just 50-60 feet away. Towels passed my glasses test (Dry my glasses with them and crystal clear!). Staff was friendly and helpful. Common areas and pool area very nice. Breakfast was good. We had lunch one day at the sushi restaurant and it was good but seemed expensive (16 Euros for 1 tuna + guacamole taco). Location is great with an easy walk into town. I would suggest that the negative reviews on the Farol are likely a function of room choice - more so than any other hotel I can think of. If one books the balcony oceanfront rooms, I can't imagine not enjoying them.

The adjoining building in a warm shade of yellow is surrounded by pine trees, with all the rooms overlooking a lush green lawn with palm trees. The third, terra cotta colored part of the hotel is built around a courtyard with a delightful little fountain. The ambience is incredibly warm and welcoming!

Short solo break

Reviewed By sjmurnane

I was extremely disappointed at the facilities and overall cleanliness of this hotel. The location was second to none and amazing walks. The food was not great and breakfast was awful. A few selections of cereal, rubbery scrambled eggs and cocktail sauages. No coffee!!!! The room had paper cups for tea/coffee and no coffee was provided. The hotel had work going on around the pool area with hazardous stairways and trailing electrical leads by the pool. No area to sit in shade or umberellas at all. The staff were not overally helpful when asked anything of. No way is this hotel fitting of a 4 star rating. It smelt musty and the reception area had tatty furniture with peeling cushions. The location itself was its saving grace and I am glad I only booked for a couple of nights
