Reviewed By susan pWe have just arrived back from a lovely week in madeira. The hotel is in a good location not far from the airport and close to Funchal. The rooms are very spacious with lovely views. The food was good, drinks were good and the entertainment although not always to our taste was on every night. The staff are absolutely lovely very helpful and friendly. The pool was heated and the sunbeds and pool area are very claen. We would go back to this hotel anytime. Thank you for a nice stay.

The Pestana Royal is an All Inclusive hotel (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and domestic beverages) located in Funchal, Madeira. The youngsters can have fun at the Kid's Club, while the adults play pool, mini golf or use the tennis court. The hotel offers 4 restaurants (1 open buffet for all meals and 3 themed restaurants), promenades and 2 bars. All of them have a very relaxed atmosphere, this being one of the main features of this resort. All rooms offer pleasant views, flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi.

Reviewed By bodeygem2013Let's start with the good things: The room was nice (paid for a sea view), the bed was fine and we had no bother getting a sun bed, even when rocking up at 1030. I liked the clientel - mostly French, Portuguese, UK and German. A mix of age groups and not too many kids. Now for the rest..... Firstly, I agree - it is not 5 star standard. I'm always happy with all inclusive as I usually like local wine and beer - the alcohol at this hotel was not at all enjoyable. I did like how bottles of water were freely available however. I also agree that the staff are miserable, particularly at the front desk. There was one lady who was nice, others were rude and sarcastic. For anybody who suggests that the restaurant is suitable for vegeterian and vegan, I would ask how they figured this out? The food is not always labelled, and when it is it says something like "pasta" rather than the ingredients. There are no vegetarian or vegan signs and no idea what the ingredients are. For example "vegetable soup" - made with chicken stock perhaps? Once I went to have the "pasta with tomato" and found the main ingredient to be Tuna! The chickpea curry had shrimp in it too. Special meals can be reserved - we were allowed two. The "Aisan Night" was sold out upon our arrival so didn't get to try that. The pizza night we did book but it was so disappointing - a massive cheese fest which took an hour to arrive, with some weird black sawdust on the base. The dining hall is a nightmare. The tables are so close together and there is one small counter to get hot food, whilst salad and bread are separate. Masks are not required and the hand sanitiser was empty for 5 days of the 8 we stayed. People make their way in through a passage in the middle of the tables and are constantly gawping at what each other are eating whilst coughing. In the end we came only for breakfast (go early) and avoided all other meals. With that and the avoidance of the disgusting alcohol, there was not much point in being all inclusive. I won't be coming back to Madeira based on this one trip to this one hotel. I would advise anybody who's considering coming here to pack a mask for all communal areas, but mainly, if you have dietary requirements.... DON'T BOTHER.

Reviewed By Alison BJust returned from a week at the Pestana casino hotel such a great hotel …friendly staff…huge rooms we had a suite which overlooked the marina & Funchal with amazing views. Nice breakfast lots of choice. My daughter loved the indoor pool and spa & the rooftop pool is gorgeous with fab views albeit a bit cold! The location is ideal as a short walk into Funchal with lots of choice of restaurants.shops & bars! The old town is lovely & just a two minute walk out of the hotel& left you have peters supermarket & fab restaurants…the Casal da Penha which is a must to visit! Amazing food and service! Definitely be back and would stay here again.

When the wheather is hot, there are two plages suitable for bath and swimming. Close to Funchal centre. Courtesy hotel bus into Funchal. Just hundred meters from hotel Aerportbus stop.

Very long walk down to Funchal/old town and more so coming back having to walk up the steep roads which was fine for us but not for less mobile. Food was little cold for me and not enough choice especially at the evening meal. A la Carte restaurant was really lovely shame only able to visit once in the 10 days. Pool cold but lovely once your in. Staff very friendly and rooms nice and spacious. Visited lots of places like Monte Palace and also went up in cable car and down on toboggans which was great fun. Nun valley & highest peak were breathtaking but have to ensure you visit on a clear day. The scenery is beautiful and Madeira's people are so lovely. Will return but maybe on B&B next time.

She said I had not paid yet, and made me pay to check in. I'm still trying to resolve the dispute with my credit card company now. NEVER AGAIN

Great value hotel with great views

The hotel was very accommodating with some last minute changes and for the accommodation and breakfast I think very good value for money. Overall very impressed with the hotel. Reception area is spacious and welcoming but found big lines at times to see someone with only 1 person to handle 2 hotels in reality. The pool area and facilities are perfect. The indoor pool warm and with beautiful tropical views really felt like heaven. The outdoor pool was great and made use of it. The pool bar was good but I think the drinks a little expensive. Onto the room and I cannot fault it everything you could want clean and modern. The bed was big and comfortable and a good shower. The balcony was Also great to relax on. Didn't use the gym or spa facilities so can't comment there but nice to know they were there. Went out both evenings so again can't comment on indoor bar or entertainment options but both again are there. Onto the food provision breakfast was great and very good value. Good selection of hot or cold options as well as fruits etc everything to meet the tastes for people from most countries. For breakfast it was very busy and struggle to get a table and the coffee and juice options I did think was poor quality but for the cost of breakfast can't really moan too much. I did have evening meal on night 1 and food the food to be of good quality and warm. Plenty of options to eat but once again expensive. We went out twice to a local restaurant and had a 3 course meal for €8.90 with drinks cheaper too so I'd personally recommend eating out. Overall excellent hotel and will certainly visit again thank you to all of the staff for a fantastic stay
